More Gold Medals add to Glistening Spring/
Summer Events at Bricoleur Vineyards
Wine tasting, even in Sonoma, can feel more like a track meet than a relaxed vineyard stroll. Fortunately, certain wineries encourage us to pause the itinerary, be it stepping between estate vines, settling into a wine-paired Dinner Series evening, or laying out a picnic beside a pond abundant with bluegill. Wine tasting transitions from a rating game to a classic memory. Bricoleur Vineyards was founded to create these moments, a superb blend of wine, culinary, and aesthetic experiences.
Though a bricoleur by definition constructs with whatever he or she may have on hand, founders Mark & Elizabeth Hanson and their daughter, Sarah Citron, worked diligently to assemble an outstanding team on an exquisite property to present an extraordinary visit for every guest. Winemaker Cary Gott founded his first winery, Montevina, at 23, one of several wineries he has started or run in his tenure among the most talented winemakers in Northern California. This spring he collected two more double Gold Medals at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Since its debut in 2017, Bricoleur Vineyards has received a double-gold, four golds, and a "Best in Class" from the SFCWC, along with 5 double-gold and 14 gold medals from other competitions.
A visit to Bricoleur Vineyards takes many forms, however, from a wood-fired pizza & wine lunch with the family to an intimate wine-paired dinner on a special Saturday. Whenever one chooses to visit, the experience begins with the Bricoleur estate itself. Set upon the western edge of the Russian River Valley, the expansive acreage features a tasting room, winery barn, pavilion, ponds, and bocce courts, as well as a sumptuous rose garden and an olive grove to explore. The gardens, source of the “Plant to Plate” culinary experience, exemplify the agricultural bounty found in Sonoma County.
The tasting room offers a variety of well-spaced tables for two to eight people on a patio that yawns toward a bucolic pasture, part of a vast farm that neighbors the estate to the north. The wine tasting menu is equally variable. The Home Grown experience, complimentary for wine club members, rings in spring with Rosé of Pinot Noir, Unoaked and Estate Chardonnay as well as an Estate Pinot Noir. Local List speaks to the spectrum of Sonoma county varietals as guests enjoy Kick Ranch - Rosé of Grenache, Kick Ranch - Sauvignon Blanc, Kick Ranch - Viognier, Estate Chardonnay, Estate Pinot Noir, and Alexander Valley - Zinfandel.

The color of this wine entices with its pale pink hues. On the nose, aromas of floral jasmine and Alpine Strawberry aboutnd. After the wine eases over the palate, flavors of ripe strawberries and Bartlett pears become readily apparent. The finish boasts notes of clover honey accented by a refreshing minerality. Much in the French style, this Rosé delivers just a suggestion of color, but follows with an abundance of complexity and flavor.

Showcasing a deep cardinal red hue, our bold Reserve Pinot offers delightfully cool earthy scents at first swirl. Star anise and menthol tobacco present the cool side to start, while subtle under-tones of cola and clove warm it back up again. The palate does not disappoint, with sharp cherry, balanced baking spice, and a little horehound candy rolled in to round off the flavor profile. Slightly earthy tones of mushroom come forward as it opens. Full of surprises, this wine offers the best of both worlds, starting strongly and finishing with a lovely mildness lingering on the palate.

"Come home, you coward" was Antonia Bartholomew's message to her husband Frank, a war correspondent for the United Press during WWII. While he was under enemy fire in the Pacific, she was working to establish their first vineyards, and she had no doubt which of these was the most perilous. He probably had a different view. This wine is our tribute to him, an expression of the best that their historic property, now ours to nurture, has to offer. This inaugural vintage is richly textured. It has a complex nose, with of notes of vanilla and sandalwood. The palate is bursting with ripe blueberry and cassis flavors, leading to a long, elegant finish.

Bricoleur Vineyard’s series of gold medal winners is astounding for a winery that completed its first vintage in 2017. The winery has elevated the culinary standard to impressive heights just as swiftly, launching an outstanding kitchen team led by Chef Shane McAnelly and Chef Evan Castro.
Our Roots tasting flight showcases the experience of the winemaker’s talent and the Chef’s cuisine, a changing menu paired with four complimentary wines. Sip & Savor expands the paired tasting menu to include six wines combined with an equal number of food partners. When you enjoy Sip & Savor your senses will be awakened to a unique & creative tasting experience.
The Sip & Savor and Wine Dinner Series programs are reserved for adults, but a visit to Bricoleur can also become a family affair, especially during the monthly Family Friendly Wine & Pizza Nights that begin in June. The Chef’s favorite event features the choice of three different wood-fired pizzas, salad, and a sweet treat.
Chef Shane McAnelly and Chef Evan joined Bricoleur Vineyards from Chalkboard and The Brass Rabbit, two Healdsburg restaurants that they helped open and run for years. Chalkboard was a recipient of the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for six consecutive years under their tenure. Upon joining Bricoleur Vineyards the team was equally taken with the Hansons' vision and to the team they had already put in place.
“It’s a chef’s dream to work closely with the gardens and create unique dishes using the fresh produce,” they say. “We knew it would be great getting in on the ground floor of a project like this.”
True to their nature, the Chef’s immediately took full advantage of the opportunity, crafting the Wine Dinner Series and In the Kitchen program that celebrates local provender and Bricoleur wines with terrific results. In the Kitchen presents a virtual “cook-along” that will definitely add zest to the Zoom call. From preparing Cioppino to Artichokes Two Ways, among other menus, Chefs Shane and Evan invite participants to “share” a kitchen (and wine!) from anywhere on the planet.
Unlike the harried routine of restaurant cooking, a winery's kitchen allows for more patience, experimentation, and creation to highlight the wines, according to the Chef’s. The monthly Wine Dinner Series demonstrates the significance of an award-winning winery paired with an equally talented culinary team.
“There’s more creativity and control at the winery than at the restaurant. We have much more time to put a lot of thought into our menus, as well as the opportunity to form intimate relationships with our customers and club members. We believe in the philosophy that the flavors of food are aimed at accentuating our wines.”
“Earth’s Bounty,” scheduled for April 3rd from 5:30 to 8:30, brings this philosophy to vibrant life on the plate and in the glass. The menu begins with a Spring Harvest Salad, followed by English Pea Agnolotti, Smoked Wild Mushrooms, and a conclusion of Coconut Cream Pie. Each course evinces the Chef’s commitment to “plant to plate”, shaved raw artichokes accent the salad, black garlic informs the Agnolotti, wild mushrooms are foraged locally. The paired wines feature a 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, 2018 Unoaked Chardonnay, 2018 Alexander Valley Zinfandel, and the signature "Flying by the Seat of Our Pants" North Coast Brut sing of seasonal renewal.
“To me ‘Plant to Plate’ highlights the important relationship and partnership with the gardens,” says the Chef. “We get to be more deliberate with what farmer Mikey
puts in the ground. It makes a big difference in the quality and flavor, and shows through in all our culinary offerings.
The Wine Dinner Series continues in May on May 8th, “With Love, From Mom.” June 19th’s “Roasted and Toasted” menu displays sublime platings of Wood-oven Roasted Gem Lettuce, Wood-oven Roasted Spanish Octopus, Smoked Tri-Tip, and Roasted Dark Chocolate S'mores throughout the evening. The pairing feature a 2019 Rosé of Pinot Noir, 2018 Unoaked Chardonnay, 2018 Estate Pinot Noir and the 2018 Alexander Valley Zinfandel. "Summer Catch," July 31st, celebrates the sea with Halibut Crudo, Gulf Shrimp & Grits, and CA King Salmon paired with award winning Bricoleur Wines. August and September find two Wine Dinner Series per month.
We’re all looking for exceptional experiences as we emerge this spring. A visit to Bricoleur Vineyards in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley invites us to explore the joyful milieu formed from a sublime landscape, keen vision, and exceptional talent. Whether we Sip & Savor, attend a Wine Dinner Series evening, bring the family out for wine & pizza night, or visit with another plan in mind, Bricoleur Vineyards invites us to string together memories from a diverse cast of experiences.
