2022 WINE COMPETITION
bursting with as much flavor as ever
in 2022, There were over forty-eight judges, representing various North American wine regions, evaluating 5,816 wines from nearly 1,000 wineries for the 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
For the past 22 years, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition has been devoted to wine — from what’s within the bottles to the people and places beyond them.
Since its inception, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) has grown to become one of the world’s most highly publicized and well-respected wine competitions, offering both large-scale and boutique wineries the opportunity to showcase their wines on a larger level. Two decades later, the competition continues to garner international attention and bring award-winning wines to more and more consumer glasses.
The individuals behind these bottles are more than just winemakers – they’re artisans – who seamlessly blend advanced winemaking technology with traditional approaches. And we believe they need to be recognized. This year, over 5,700 wines from more than 1,100 wineries throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico were entered with the hopes of bringing home recognition as one of North America’s finest wines of the year. Over 55 wine professionals representing media, trade, winemaking, education, and restaurant/hospitality industries – including The Chronicle’s very own Wine Critic, Esther Mobley – gathered in Cloverdale Tuesday, January 11th through Friday, January 14th to taste and evaluate the submissions.
The event organizers worked closely with the City of Cloverdale and County of Sonoma to ensure all participants were following COVID-19 protocols and working in a safe environment.

"Come home, you coward" was Antonia Bartholomew's message to her husband Frank, a war correspondent for the United Press during WWII. While he was under enemy fire in the Pacific, she was working to establish their first vineyards, and she had no doubt which of these was the most perilous. He probably had a different view. This wine is our tribute to him, an expression of the best that their historic property, now ours to nurture, has to offer. This inaugural vintage is richly textured. It has a complex nose, with of notes of vanilla and sandalwood. The palate is bursting with ripe blueberry and cassis flavors, leading to a long, elegant finish.

This extremely unique wine can be classified as a white Port. The fermenting begins once the grapes are harvested and crushed. The wine is then fortified before fermentation is complete leaving the wine with a considerable amount of residual sugar. Its color is an intense amber, and the flavors range from brown sugar and nuts to complex and pronounced notes of honey, dried fruit, and licorice.

Landmark Vineyards 2018 Sta. Rita Hills La Encantada Vineyard Pinot Noir: Splashy and silky, assertive and resonating, the La Encantada is an exceptionally rich, spicy and persevering take on Pinot Noir, showing that the variety as grown in California can be the equal, if not the superior, to any cultivated anywhere. With all its centered assurance and dictionary-worth definition of what Pinot Noir is all about, the La Encantada strode to the front of an unusually diverse and long list of contenders for best red wine in the sweepstakes finale of the 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition; 24 other nominees were up for the honor, but the Pinot Noir, first candidate on the list, weathered every successive challenge. While Landmark is in Sonoma County, this sweepstakes winner was made with grapes grown in Sta. Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County far to the south.

Barnard Griffin 2021 Columbia Valley Rosé of Sangiovese: If we haven't yet reached the stage where every other rosé in a wine competition simply yields the best-of-class showdown to the Barnard Griffin Sangiovese, we're close. The Barnard Griffin is just that consistent in winning high honors on the competition circuit, its reliability reinforced when judges of the 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition declared it the best pink wine in the sweepstakes round, where it outshone five other strong candidates in an unusually competitive and congested field for the style. The Barnard Griffin Sangiovese continues to stand out for its extremely tempting aroma, its field of strawberries dense and zingy across the palate, and its extraordinarily incessant finish.

Silva Road is a boutique family-owned winery that produces beautifully crafted wines from organically farmed grapes at the headwaters of the Russian River. The Silva family has established a vineyard that provides roots for a multi-generational family wine making enterprise in the Redwood Valley AVA. We were inspired by previous generations to continue organic, biodynamic viticulture methods and safe farming practices. Under the care and guidance of our vineyard managers, the vines have flourished, and our first produced Cabernet Sauvignons are at their peak. With our Gold medal Chardonnay and Gold medal Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, we have a truly phenomenal collection of rare wines.

Stormalong Cider
Learn More
Stormalong Cider was founded in 2014 by Shannon Edgar with the desire to showcase the virtues of cider made with the right apples. We’re committed to quality and taste. Since our founding, we have always set out to make delicious cider with the highest quality, whole ingredients we can find.
All of our ciders are made with 100% REAL, WHOLE, carefully sourced local apples which are freshly pressed and fermented with care. We never use concentrates, added water, artificial ingredients, natural flavors or essences of any kind.
To us, apples are to cider as grapes are to wine. We aim to increase awareness of the diversity of apple cultivars, some of which have been around since the country was founded, while continuing to innovate and explore in the pursuit of cider’s full potential.
