With no limitations on who can attend Ignite Community Schools, tuition is 100% covered by the state of Texas, including all books and materials needed for enrollment. Some campuses even offer after-school care. If you are unsatisfied with your current school of choice, then Ignite would love the opportunity to show you how education is supposed to look.

As Assistant Superintendent, Mitchell considers himself blessed to get to know so many of their scholars regularly. In fact, Mitchell openly speaks of one eighth grader who has been attending Ignite for the past five years, and the staff are all certain he will become president of the United States one day.
“I have no doubt in my mind,” Mitchell comments. “If you’ve got a kid that can change the world, come join other kids like him or her. We take the best kid a parent sends us, and we make them better. That’s always the goal.”
If any students are currently attending a traditional ISD that isn’t a good fit for them but are hesitant to leave for fear of missing the social aspects, they’re in luck. Ignite Community Schools offer multiple sports programs from basketball to volleyball, and they also have chess clubs, debate teams, community gardens and many more electives at every campus, providing opportunities for students to be engaged in activities outside of school.
“We definitely do our best to encompass those needs,” Mitchell says. “Research says that kids involved in extracurricular activities are more likely to graduate and come to school daily. We do everything that every school you could think of does, we just do it in a smaller, more closeknit community.”
We open our doors for all types of kids, and one thing we really think about is how we do what's right for them."
One common question Ignite often receives is about who is the right fit for their academic program. The beauty of the answer is that one doesn’t exist.
“The reality of the situation is that there is no right fit, because the kids that walk into our buildings are all very, very different,” says Isaac Williams, Executive Director for Ignite. “We open our doors for all types of kids, and one thing we really think about is how we do what's right for them.”
Ignite Community Schools also have someone on every campus that any type of kid can relate to – this is definitely intentional. Analyzing data from various school districts, Ignite has assembled the perfect mix of teachers younger and older, spanning every ethnicity imaginable.
“We've got the perfect mix of support to match those demographics as well,” Brad Mitchell adds. “Everybody has somebody they can relate to at every single level.”

Embracing the Community and Serving the Underserved
Unlike many other massive schools where kids can be in danger of becoming just another number, Ignite makes sure that none of their scholars get left behind. Working hand in hand with the community, every single scholar matters not only to their teachers, but also to the campus directors, who treat them all as if they were their own.
“Attendance is a big thing for us,” Isaac Williams comments. “We do whatever it takes to get kids into those doors every single day. Another one is student retention. We believe the best way for our model to show that it works is if kids stay with us over time.”
Having formerly worked in ISDs before, Williams knows how easy it is to lose kids. Aiming to be dynamic, the campus directors at Ignite are given incredibly ambitious goals they are sure to meet not just quarterly but also weekly.
Another lofty goal for Ignite has been to maintain the longevity of their caring teachers, keeping them around as long as possible for the students to experience a stronger curriculum and better learning environment.
State-wide, the student population in Texas is enormously diverse to say the least, consisting of many young people who have grown up at an economic disadvantage. A great number of these students are of color and have been marginalized by certain situations, with thousands even growing up bilingual with English not the primary language spoken at home.
ResponsiveEd's goal is to figure out how to create access for these exact kids, ensuring they fall in love with learning and become change agents of the future. This is what makes Ignite Community Schools so special. As tuition-free, public charter schools that challenge each “scholar” with a curriculum adaptive to individual learning needs, Ignite now has 10 campuses in Texas, 4 of which are in the Houston area.
To share more, we caught up with two of their administrative leaders, including Executive Director Isaac Williams and Assistant Superintendent Brad Mitchell.
For decades now, ResponsiveEd’s umbrella of schools have been reimagining the concept of teaching and learning. However, Ignite Community Schools is a comprehensive offering with a unique model, mission and overall vision that manages to be completely different than anything else ResponsiveEd has done before.

“Across Texas, people are leaving the profession,” Williams says of teacher turnover rates. “The biggest impact it has is on the kids. We're really tracking teacher retention and thinking about what to do creatively to empower and keep people.”
With these practices in place, students at Ignite Community Schools have shown significant growth in reading and math since their inception, which is now well above the state average by double digits. The schools are also placing a heavy emphasis right now on writing, which is an area in which education in the state of Texas has been lagging.
