Great educators know that success looks different for each learner, and ensuring meaningful outcomes for children requires learning environments that uniquely support the needs of each learner. No matter what choice is right for your child and family, Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) has a learning experience designed to fit their needs.
SBISD provides families with a comprehensive range of options, starting with the choice to attend a high-quality neighborhood school. Families can also choose from a range of schools and programs, including Two-Way Dual Language, Dual Language, International Baccalaureate (IB), Gifted and Talented, or one of SBISD’s in-district or partner charter schools. That choice starts as early as pre-K.
For Mariluna Hernandez, enrolling her student in a pre-K program was never a question. She knew her son, Samuel, would gain great benefits from being part of the program.

Hernandez recalls the exact moment she found the perfect fit for Samuel.
“As a mother, you want your child to be in the best hands,” said Hernandez. “While touring Lion Lane School for Early Learning, one of the teachers said ‘your student is safe here, we will care for him like our own child,’ and that is when I knew.”
SBISD offers pre-K that provides a developmentally appropriate and integrated curriculum that focuses on the social, intellectual and physical development of Every Child.
Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Blaine encourages families to enroll their children in a pre-K or early childhood program and highlights the importance of providing students with a good foundation before they enter upper-grade levels.
“Our educators not only give students the tools to develop their literacy and numeracy skills but also help them become high-achieving and self-confident individuals,” said Dr. Blaine.
The pre-k programs are designed to instill SBISD’s Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 ready graduate: Academically Prepared, Ethical & Service-minded, Empathetic & Self-Aware, Persistent & Adaptable, Resourceful Program-solver and Communicator & Collaborator.
SBISD’s T-2-4 vision aims to have every graduate attain a technical certificate, military training, or a two-year or four-year degree. At the pre-k centers, educators are focused on delivering an authentic learning experience at an early age that engages, motivates and supports the development of the Core Characteristics in all students.
“Our days are filled with hands-on activities and meaningful experiences,” said Maria Bracho, teacher at Lion Lane. “But it is not all academic, they also develop important social and emotional skills. They learn how to interact with others, to develop friendships and have empathy for their classmates. It is amazing to see the way our little learners bloom in just one year in early childhood education.”
For Hernandez, the social aspect was a very important one. Samuel is an only child and she notes that it was important for her that her child developed social skills.
“I wanted my child to be around other kids his age,” added Hernandez. “I wanted him to initiate play and I have seen him grow. Every time we go out to a playground or a restaurant he always makes friends. It is clear that his teachers had a role in that development.”
Sarah O’Rear mentions her son Will also showed extreme growth throughout his pre-K experience, both socially and academically. Will’s teachers at Bear Blvd. helped provide a foundation in phonics and math and fostered a great love for learning.
“SBISD pre-K is a wonderful way to invest in your child and the community around you,” said O’Rear. “There is a world of options for three- and four-year-olds but SBISD pre-K stands out as a place of community, care and academic excellence. This is the best decision we could have made for Will.”
Bear Boulevard director Stefanie Spencer mentions that SBISD’s pre-k programs meet students where they are academically and socially and help them grow to ensure they become confident students.
The district offers a full-day four-year-old and a half-day three-year-old pre-K program at its pre-K centers including: The Bear Blvd. School, The Lion Lane School, The Panda Path School, The Tiger Trail School and the Wildcat Way School.
Additionally, SBISD offers pre-K at select elementary schools: Edgewood, Hollibrook, Meadow Wood, Memorial Drive, Nottingham, Rummel Creek, Shadow Oaks, Thornwood, Wilchester and Woodview.
Hernandez notes that Samuel often comes home excited about learning something new. She has seen how he has grown throughout the program learning the alphabet, shapes, colors, numeracy and even vowels and consonants.
She is also grateful the program values literacy extensively. Hernandez says Samuel enjoys books and likes engaging in discussions that help him better understand the stories.
“The program has a well-rounded curriculum and has the necessary resources to support my child’s academic development,” added Hernandez.
Benefits from enrolling children in pre-K programs include an increased vocabulary, increased literacy, a higher IQ and a higher prospect of attending and graduating from college. The program introduces students to a positive learning environment and builds a strong foundation in social, pre-academic and general life skills.
“At our pre-k centers, we strive to provide the best educational foundation for Every Child,” said Morella Tapia, director at Wildcat Way. “Starting from ages three and up, our curriculum prepares your child to excel at the elementary and secondary levels.”
