In the modern world, being a compassionate corporation is far from easy. With many companies searching for ways to support employees who are caring for loved ones, the Alzheimer’s Association offers a wealth of resources to help caregivers who balance their duties with full-time careers. Corporations can engage in various activities that foster a compassionate and supportive corporate culture, from forming resource groups to sponsoring events.
Having spent the majority of his career in the oil and gas industry, Houston’s own Jose Bayardo is the CFO for NOV Inc. (formerly known as National Oilwell Varco). His involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association started a number of years ago when his own mother became ill, and it fell on the shoulders of Bayardo, his sister, and their family to care for her. Understandably, they were not properly equipped with the knowledge of what was coming or how to effectively deal with the pending situation.
After dropping everything and heading over to the Alzheimer’s Association office that was at the time near the Texas Medical Center on Holcombe Blvd., the staff was not only friendly and welcoming but incredibly helpful too, imparting a wealth of information and other resources on how the disease normally progresses.
“Initially, it was an organization that was a resource to me and my family as we were struggling with the evolving dementia of my mother,” Bayardo says. “It gave us the confidence that we needed to make decisions about some of the very, very difficult things that we were going to have to do.”
After moving his mother to Houston to give her proper care, Bayardo realized what a huge expense it is to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, especially if you don’t have a family member dedicated to the person full-time.
“I would think about all the other families that aren’t as fortunate as we are,” he recalls, “how they must struggle with this caretaking. Even we felt it was a big struggle for us.”
About seven years ago, Bayardo’s mother passed away. He then made the decision to start giving back to the Alzheimer’s Association for helping him and his family, along with everyone else who also has loved ones suffering from this devastating disease. He initially made modest contributions and gradually became more involved with the Association, attending many of their fundraising efforts. After several years, he made the decision to solicit support from his colleagues at NOV.

Getting Involved
NOV’s Commitment to Caregiving
NOV gradually became more and more involved with the Association and steadily increased donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, they have also attended The Walk to End Alzheimer’s® for three consecutive years – a fantastic event that brings people together across the entire community, allowing them to share stories, and challenges, and support one another over an uplifting experience. At this year’s upcoming Walk on November 9, 2024, NOV is expected to significantly beat their prior fundraising levels and surpass their previous number of participants.
“It’s just a hugely beneficial cause,” Bayardo says of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Obviously it’s a horrible disease that we want to find a cure for, but also we really want to help people within our employee base and within the broader community, to arm them with information and help them with the daily struggles of caring for a loved one who is suffering from this disease.”
Upping their involvement even further last year, NOV has established several groups, including one called the Caregiver’s Alliance, which assists employees who are balancing careers with caregiving responsibilities. This alliance includes those caring for children with challenges and parents with dementia, offering a supportive network. NOV also hosts lunch and learn events at their office to teach people about the disease and what resources the Association has available.
“These sessions have been really beneficial session for the group and also helped us get more people within NOV interested in getting involved with the Association and with the Walk, which helped us increase our participation and fundraising,” Bayardo says.
Involvement like this strengthens NOV’s internal community and exemplifies what it means to be a compassionate corporation. With these initiatives being so well-received, and numerous employees across the organization participating, NOV will certainly continue to support the Alzheimer’s Association. However, they also implore other companies to begin getting involved as well.
“Alzheimer’s is a huge burden on the entire world,” Bayardo states. “If we don’t support the people who are taking care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s, it has an impact on the workforce,” Bayardo warns. “Supporting this cause shows your workforce and your community that you care for them, you care for what they’re dealing with, and you want to help.”
In addition to forming these groups within the organization, the people at NOV pride themselves on supporting not only employees but also the region in which they operate. Greater Houston, including its many surrounding areas, is their biggest employee base, and they make it a point to always hold as many charitable events as possible that support the entire city.
