With the Expansion of VRF, Going Green Is a Lot
Easier in Oklahoma
Oklahoma is blessed with an abundance of natural resources, but our greatest resource is our people. Resilient and optimistic, Oklahomans live in a beautiful landscape that’s not without its challenges — hot in the summer and cold in the winter — requiring us to cool or heat our buildings almost year-round. Traditional chillers, air conditioners, boilers, and furnaces have long been the solutions of choice, but now, with sustainability across energy sectors becoming a priority, an advanced alternative steps forward: VRF zoning technology.
VRF stands for variable refrigerant flow, an innovative multi-zone system that provides unbeatable comfort, flexibility, and efficiency for any size building. Available as heat pump or heat recovery systems, VRF zoning systems are the fastest growing technology in the HVAC space and a popular choice for HVAC solutions in Oklahoma. They save energy, uniting sustainability and comfort. Long used as the ideal solution to control building temperature in locations that experience temperature extremes, like Europe, VRF has been serving buildings in Oklahoma via Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS), a joint venture formed by Mitsubishi US and Trane Technologies™. It’s quickly becoming the preferred solution for improving people’s lives and improving the environment.
The goal is simple: to improve the comfort and efficiency of any home, any building, anywhere. Trane works with building owners, contractors and engineers, using VRF systems to help design and maintain sustainable, high performing buildings while variable-capacity heat pumps are helping residences be more efficient. Together, this forward-thinking collaboration seeks to secure our energy future while improving our day-to-day lives now.

As a joint venture between two brands known in the US for high quality and reliability, Trane®/Mitsubishi Electric VRF zoning systems are variable-capacity heat pumps that deliver high-performance and high efficiency. VRF zoning systems use an advanced heat pump, or heat recovery, process to move heat energy around to different zones via refrigerant lines connected to small air handlers in each zone. Varying and distributing the capacity to a building per zone is a smarter way versus one centralized air handler pushing air long distances in large ducts while running at full capacity. The building saves energy while maintaining better zone-by-zone temperature control.
For Oklahoma businesses and homes, Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric VRF systems and variable-capacity heat pumps have many advantages. First is energy efficiency. With decarbonization a priority across energy industries to secure our climate, VRF systems and variable-capacity heat pumps are ideal because they run on electricity, year-round. They also use fewer of the resources we need to conserve. On a consumer level, saving energy means saving money on energy costs.

The mission of the joint venture is to better the lives of all those who need innovative climate control solutions. Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US, LLC leads a wide-ranging movement that aims to preserve our history, ensuring we thrive in the future through empowering businesses and residences to lessen their carbon footprint in a variety of ways. Buildings including some in the historic Automobile Alley portion of downtown OKC are being retrofitted with Trane / Mitsubishi Electric high-efficiency VRFs, making old buildings future-ready. Thanks to this equipment, Riversport’s Olympic Rowing Center can now host Olympic training in a sustainable environment will remain in Oklahoma.
Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US, LLC is also committed to giving back to the community. They donated variable-capacity heat pumps to OKC non-profit PIVOT. PIVOT’s tiny home project helps reduce homelessness in young people who age out of the foster care system. Due to space constraints, tiny homes require variable-capacity ductless systems, and METUS stepped up to help our most vulnerable.

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), can make variable-capacity heat pump technology more accessible to Oklahoma homeowners and multi-family building owners. The law includes various incentive and rebate programs ― like the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program (HEEHRP) ― to help residential homes and multifamily buildings make the transition to these energy-saving, sustainable systems. The IRA also allocates $4.3 billion to states for home energy improvement projects including point-of-sale heat pump rebates. Each qualified household may be eligible to receive an offset of up to $8,000 on the cost of heat pump installation, plus a $500 rebate for contractors per heat pump installation may be available. Additionally, the bill includes a possible 30% income tax credit, capped at $2,000 per household, per year, for the cost of buying and installing a heat pump that meets or exceeds the Consortium for Energy Efficiency’s highest tier. Certain Trane / Mitsubishi Electric products may qualify. Consult your own tax, legal, and accounting advisors for information and advice.
