2023 WINE COMPETITION
bursting with as much flavor as ever
in 2023, There were over Fifty-two judges, representing various North American wine regions, evaluating 5,800 wines from Over 1,000 wineries for the 2023 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
For the past 23 years, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition has been devoted to wine — from what’s within the bottles to the people and places beyond them.
Since its inception, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) has grown to become one of the world’s most highly publicized and well-respected wine competitions, offering both large-scale and boutique wineries the opportunity to showcase their wines on a larger level. Two decades later, the competition continues to garner international attention and bring award-winning wines to more and more consumer glasses.
The individuals behind these bottles are more than just winemakers – they’re artisans – who seamlessly blend advanced winemaking technology with traditional approaches. And we believe they need to be recognized. Now in its 23rd year, the meticulously judged contest evaluates some 5,500 wines from more than 1,000 North American wineries throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
It’s an awesome undertaking for the more than five dozen judges, professionals handpicked from media, trade, winemaking, education and restaurant/hospitality industries, including The Chronicle’s very own Wine Writer Jess Lander. But it’s a labor of love, to celebrate both large-scale and boutique wineries and bring international attention to award-winning wines.

This exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon showcases some of the more extreme growing sites that lie on the western hillsides of Dry Creek Valley. The undulating nature of the terrain provides grapes that are beautifully ripened and lead to a wine that is silky, textured and complex. Juicy aromas of black currant, blueberry and raspberry come forward initially. Additional airing reveals notes of dried rose petals, cedar and sweet tobacco. The palate is bold and luxurious with luscious fruit flavors of black and red cherries, and cranberry. The finish lingers with notes of marzipan, almond and mocha.

After a fairly normal winter and spring, 2020 saw above average temperatures in September and early October that pushed ripening for the vintage - resulting in early, excellent fruit expression in the bottle. We ferment a portion of our Fog's Reach Pinot Noir on stems to add floral and peppery components to the blend. Elevage was 8 months on lees in 15% new French oak barrels with the balance in 3rd-fill cooperage This adds subtle oak notes and viscosity on the palate while maintaining the refined fruit signature of this terroir-driven Pinot Noir.

Nestled within the hills of historic New Almaden in Santa Clara Valley, the 2019 “Hawk Eye” Syrah is as bold and complex as the bird it personifies. The nose is graceful and soft with whispers of raspberry and black plum. It’s fruit forward on the tongue, with a jammy, dry finish. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, this Syrah pairs with braised beef, duck, grilled meat, and veggies.
“Hawk Eye” Syrah embodies the bold nature of this bird of prey and is an homage to the virtues of focus and determination. Much like the hawk, this uniquely Silicon Valley Syrah speaks to the entrepreneurial spirit of those who dare to be different.

This unique aperitif, resting for more than six months in contact with the green walnuts and botanicals, is complex with hints of untamed tannin, cloves, and baked apples, with warming aromas of mulled wine, sweet molasses, holiday spice, potpourri, banana bread and sherry. A light herbaceous entry builds with red fruit from the Berryessa Gap Vineyards’ Estate Zinfandel (Primitivo clone) wine base mixed with a light green spiciness from the walnut skins. The slight bitterness balances with the rich port-like flavors infused with cinnamon and cloves.

The 2018 Pinot Noir received a double gold during this year's competition. The grace and allure of Weir Pinots is undeniable; aromas of red currant, strawberry compote, white rose petals, black plum, gala apple, red candy hearts, hint of raspberry, cedar spice, marionberry, sage and cinnamon spice… the mouthfeel is graceful, mouthcoating, silky, soft, caressing and savory with an airy and vibrant balance that feels like a 12 million thread count set of sheets. Wines from this vineyard send most of us over the moon.

Father-daughter duo Gery & Ashley here to introduce our boutique winery, Aimee June. As the owners and winemakers, we’re truly a family affair making small lots of high-quality wines. Each wine released featured Ashley’s original hand painted artwork. Our Tannat is a full-bodied wine owing its greatness to an amazing small family vineyard. The vines are dry farmed, head trimmed in the old way and grow up on a ridgetop providing natural tannins. The fruit was too good to mess with, only neutral oak aging. Visit our website and come taste our other award winning wines.
