by the many Medicare options available? It’s understandable when there are so many Medicare options and combinations available.
Whether you have many questions or one little question about Medicare and which of its many plans is right for you, the California Department of Aging’s Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides free, confidential counseling to help you or a loved one.
Volunteer HICAP counselors are specially trained in the many technical aspects of Medicare to provide unbiased, one-on-one counseling, education, and assistance to those 65 or older and their families on Medicare, Long-Term Care Insurance, and other health-related issues. These volunteers are then able to apply their knowledge and experience to help each of their individual clients make informed decisions about their health insurance. Best of all, these volunteers enjoy making a positive difference and knowing they’re helping solve someone’s problem.
HICAP Medicare counseling is available statewide. You can find your local HICAP program by visiting Find Services in My County or by calling (800) 434-0222.
Feeling overwhelmed?
Counseling is provided to those 65 or older and eligible for Medicare, disabled individuals under 65 who are eligible for Medicare, and those soon to be eligible for Medicare.
Interested in becoming a volunteer HICAP counselor? HICAP is always seeking volunteers from all backgrounds and those who speak languages other than English to broaden the community of older Californians we serve. HICAP counselors need to be free from any conflicts of interest and have a high degree of integrity, a willingness to learn, and the desire to help others. You can learn more about volunteering for HICAP by contacting your local HICAP office or calling (800) 434-0222.
