The wait is over. After a spring and summer filled with scouting, planning, and daydreaming, it’s finally time to grab our gear and get out on the hunt. Of course, every new season comes with the potential and promise that it might be even better than last year. But even experienced hunters know there’s always something new to learn to enhance the experience. Your friends at Big & J, you trusted provided of deer mineral and long-range attractants, put together a few tips for hunters young and old. Happy hunting!
Hunting doesn’t just start in the fall. You can drastically increase the likelihood of success by monitoring deer movement year-round, either in-person or via field cameras. That way you can pick the prime spots when it’s time to head out on the hunt.
1. Do Your Homework
Of course, you don’t need to be passive to the whims of nature when it comes to deer herding. Help them by setting up three or four feeding sites. This is particularly effective early in the season when deer crave minerals, so be sure to use mineral-rich attractants like Big & J Headrush or Dig It in the early part of summer.
2. Help The Herd
3. Invest in the Hobby
Any hunter will tell you that it’s easy to dump a ton of money into hunting gear. But the truth is, if you’re serious, you’re only as good as your equipment. When it comes to comfort and warmth in boots, gloves, coveralls, and other apparel, you generally get what you pay for. And definitely don’t skimp when it comes to safety. Make sure your firearms, bows, tree stands, and other potentially dangerous hunting tools are top-quality.
4. Build Your Own Trophy Buck
If you’re getting into the competitive side of hunting, or just want to harvest bigger, better deer, you don’t have to wait for fate to bring you that trophy buck. By scouting the land you hunt, setting up feeding sites, and using the right regimen of minerals and nutrients, you can help your herd grow bigger bodies and racks for hunting season. (For more information on nutrition, check out this blogpost.)
Hunting can be a lot like working out: Both take patience, dedication, and self-discipline to be successful. So just as you might recruit a running buddy to keep you honest in your workout regimen, find a hunting partner who matches (or even exceeds) your dedication to the sport. Besides, hunting is often a mental challenge. And two heads are better than one.
5. Use the Buddy System
This seems like a no-brainer, but during a long day of hunting, even the most dedicated hunters get impatient, antsy, and even anxious. Remember to stay put and remain still for long stretches. Give your quarry time to come to you.
6. TAKE YOUR TIME
It takes more than soap and water to conceal your scent from the highly trained nose of a deer. You can either sleep for a few days in a pile of leaves or you can use something that will not only mask your smell, but it’ll also attract deer. Attractant sprays like Big & J’s Liquid Luck disperse proven, long-range aromas into the air and onto to surrounding foliage that will grab even the sharpest-smelling deer’s attention.
7. MASK YOUR SMELL
Once you’re sure the deer can’t smell you, make sure it doesn’t hear you either. The snap of a twig breaking the stillness of the forest is a cliché, but that’s all it takes to alert a nearby deer to your presence. Even if you’re not walking, be sure the ground around your blind or position is clear of debris, leaves, branches, or anything else that might cause a ruckus.
8. WATCH YOUR STEP
Hunting can be extremely frustrating. After all, you spend weeks preparing and gathering your gear and then hours in the elements often with little more to show for your investment than a couple of rub lines on a tree trunk. But it only takes that one sighting, that one pull of the trigger, and that one harvest to rekindle the passion inside. It will come. Until that time …
9. DON'T GIVE UP
We all live for the harvest. We all compare weights and points and hold on to our dreams of posing with that trophy buck. But if we’re being honest, the real reason we hunt is the hunt itself. It’s the ritual. The tradition passed down from our parents and grandparents. It’s spending time in the outdoors, communing with nature, being quiet with ourselves. And it’s the experience we share with our family, friends, and loved ones. That’s why we hunt.
10. FOCUS ON THE EXPERIENCE
