We created Parkinson's Cards to Heroes as a part of our commitment to the Parkinson's community, and the program is a resource to help with one of the unexpected challenges of living with the condition: losing the ability to hold a favorite pen to write a note or a letter or to sign a check.
- Olga Klepitskaya, MD, FAAN, Medical Director at Neurocrine Biosciences.

For the nearly one million people living with Parkinson's disease, everyday activities are often impacted as the condition progresses. Daily tasks such as grocery shopping may become more challenging and require the support of a care provider.
Even signing a birthday card can become progressively more difficult as micrographia—a cramped form of handwriting—sets in for nearly three quarters of people living with Parkinson’s disease. And while cramped or small handwriting may seem like a minor inconvenience, to lose one’s unique way of writing may feel like losing the connection to oneself.
Handwriting practice has been shown to help. It also increases brain activity, and perhaps as importantly, to help people feel more connected to who they are. Unfortunately, the practice itself can often be a real struggle.
Neurocrine Biosciences is a neuroscience-focused, biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering, developing and delivering life-changing treatments for Parkinson's disease, a progressive chronic condition with no known cure. Those responding to major adversity, including living with Parkinson’s disease, might be the first to recognize the positive, have a wider sense of appreciation, and express thanks to others. So, while the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially challenging over the past year, there’s also been a depth of gratitude—especially for frontline workers who risk their own personal health to protect the lives of others.
Understanding the connection between the innate gratitude of this community and the beneficial but challenging practice of handwriting, Neurocrine Biosciences, in partnership with Operation Gratitude, has launched Parkinson’s Cards to Heroes. The program is designed to motivate people living with Parkinson’s disease to keep up with their handwriting exercises by sending messages of gratitude to everyday heroes, including those on the frontlines. These letters will be included in Operation Gratitude's care packages, which are assembled and shipped nationwide and across the globe to support military, first responders, and veterans. Oftentimes the recipients of these packages cite the personal messages inside as one of the most meaningful items within the care package and people participating in the Parkinson's Cards to Heroes program can know they are making a real impact in the lives of these heroes.
The free kit includes four custom greeting cards, an instruction sheet, and four sample messages to transcribe. A prepaid, preaddressed envelope is also included so participants can easily mail back the completed cards to Operation Gratitude, who will distribute the cards. Operation Gratitude is the largest non-profit in the country for hands on volunteerism in support of military, veterans and first responders. People living with Parkinson’s disease, or their loved ones, who are interested in the program can request a kit by visiting the program’s website.
As Parkinson’s progresses, it’s not only writing ability that can be impacted. Over time, declining dopamine levels can cause decreased motor functions, tremors, rigidity, as well as impaired posture, speech and balance. Neurocrine Biosciences is committed to advancing the standard of care for people living with neurological conditions and movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
Whether you or a loved one lives with Parkinson’s disease, participating in the Parkinson’s Cards to Heroes program means spreading support for the healthcare heroes who have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, while keeping people living with Parkinson’s disease more connected to who they are.

For the nearly one million people living with Parkinson’s disease, moments of independence are increasingly coveted as this neurogenerative condition takes its toll on their minds and bodies. Seemingly simple tasks such as grocery shopping may become more challenging without the aid of a caregiver.
