Of course, Head Start begins with quality early childhood education. The program offers individualized teaching with low teacher-to-child ratios so that every child can receive the unique care and attention they deserve. Here children are taught, screened, and continually assessed on school-readiness skills. They learn structured routines and schedules. They also participate in activities designed to promote healthy social and emotional development. Early learning experiences are culturally diverse, inclusive and includes language heritage of each child and family in relevant ways.
But Head Start is about much more than just providing academics and social skills. After all, so much of a person’s success and fulfillment depends on their health. That’s why Head Start conducts regular health screenings, on-site dental exams, including providing fluoride varnish, hearing and vision screenings, and medical and dental case management. Throughout the course of a routine day, children learn in clean, safe environments and participate in indoor and outdoor physical activity. Their breakfast, lunch, and snacks come from menus developed by registered dieticians, and are safe and nutritious. All Head Start staff members are also certified in first aid and CPR, in case of emergencies.
Head Start also realizes that, no matter how much assistance, encouragement, and education your child receives at school, their most important and influential teacher will always be you. Parents, including grandparents, foster parents, and other primary caregivers, are recognized as the children’s first and most prominent teachers. Family is the foundation of future success. Head Start offers parent advocacy and training, family nutritional sessions, parent engagement activities, and leadership opportunities. The program strives to strengthen families and help them meet their needs and achieve their goals. Head Start also provides a strong network to connect families to with medical, dental, and mental health services to ensure children and families are receiving the care and attention they need.
