The Clean Origin Promise
Your love story is unique and one-of-a-kind, inspired by age-old traditions, but not bound by them. Your values have evolved and your standards are higher. So, why should you expect anything less of your diamond either, the very symbol of you and your beloved’s special and powerful bond?
When you hear the words “lab-created diamonds,” you may immediately assume that the term is a euphemism for “fake”. However, lab-created diamonds are anything but. There’s a common misconception that in order for something to be “real,” it must have originated from the earth. Yes, diamonds may have served as a beautiful representation of love and commitment between two adoring partners for over a century, but there is unfortunately a dark truth behind natural diamonds’ origins.
What is a Mined or ‘Natural’ Diamond?
Diamonds that originated from the earth are composed of carbon and formed under the pressure of the earth’s crust, in a process that took millions of years. Mining these naturally formed diamonds is no easy feat, requiring extensive resources, equipment and labor to successfully discover and retrieve the precious jewels.
Remember, just because something may have natural derivations does not mean that it is necessarily better. Unfortunately, the majority of the diamonds on the market that were derived organically and mined in traditional ways, take a tremendous toll on the earth with considerable ecological impact and ethical implications. A century of irresponsible and unethical mining of diamonds has wreaked havoc on the earth creating severe ecological devastation, harming ecosystems, causing soil erosion, contributing to deforestation, and even uprooting whole populations of people.
What are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
There is a common misunderstanding that lab-grown diamonds” are fake or serve as some sort of substitute for “real” diamonds. However, the only real difference between a mined diamond and a lab-grown diamond is its origin story.
Alexander Weindling, CEO of Clean Origin likens this misconception to the ways in which people perceive plant-based proteins as substitutes for the real thing. “A lot of people think lab-grown diamonds are similar to a diamond substitute, similar to plant-based burgers like Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat.” At the end of the day, a diamond is still a diamond, according to Weindling, “whether it was mined from the ground or created in a factory.”
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that contain all of the same properties as naturally derived diamonds, but were instead grown inside a lab using cutting-edge technology. The goal is to recreate the conditions inside the lab that diamonds undergo underneath the Earth’s surface to produce a diamond that is, for all intents and purposes, identical to that of naturally originated diamonds. This means that a lab-grown diamond is the same as a natural diamond in its chemical structure and physical appearance as well as optically, as perceived by the naked eye.
What is the Difference Between Lab-Grown Diamonds and Cubic Zirconia?
The difference between lab-grown diamonds and cubic zirconia is that one of the two is actually fake. According to Stephen Morriseau, a spokesman for the Gemological Institute of America, a non-profit institute committed to the research and education in the field of gemology, “[Lab-created diamonds] are not fakes. They’re not cubic zirconias. They have all the same physical and chemical properties of a mined diamond.” While cubic zirconias do not contain the same properties as diamonds, lab-grown diamonds do.
Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Synthetic Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are occasionally referred to as synthetic diamonds. As the term, “synthetic” tends to be associated with the concept of “fake,” it is not surprising that many people believe that synthetic diamonds are not real diamonds. Synthetic products are those that are created using chemical or artificial substances, as opposed to natural materials. In the case of lab-grown diamonds, again, lab-grown diamonds can be considered synthetic due to the fact that they’re created inside a lab, replicating the natural conditions that take place under the earth’s crust that produce diamonds organically.
How Are Lab-Created Diamonds Grown?
Again, the aim of creating diamonds in the lab is to simulate the organic process in which natural diamonds were formed deep within the earth billions of years ago. Under the earth’s surface, diamonds are exposed to tremendous heat and pressure. There are two main methods in which diamonds are created in a lab that are used to replicate these natural conditions: High pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
Both HPHT and CVD diamonds begin as small diamond seeds. HPHT diamonds are exposed to an extreme temperature of 1500 degrees Celsius and pressurized to approximately 1.5 million pounds per square inch. A CVD diamond is placed in a sealed chamber where it is then exposed to intense heat around 800 degrees Celsius. These processes both result in pure carbon diamonds that when ionized, begin to crystallize to assume their final form of lab-grown diamonds, a form that once again, is identical in quality and clarity to that of natural diamonds.
What are the Benefits of A Clean Origin Diamond?
In an industry that has been plagued by a darkness that taints the beauty of the jewels it markets, Clean Origin is motivated by an ethos to offer its customers an authentic and pure beginning, as precious and meaningful as the love shared by an engaged couple. Clean-Origin diamonds are lab-grown diamonds that offer the same sparkling and pristine clarity and quality as that of mined diamonds, but in a way that is kinder to the environment — and humanity. Lab-created diamonds are made sustainably, are eco-friendly to the environment and are ultimately, more friendly to your wallet as well.
Eco-Friendly
The traditional mining of diamonds yields significant impact on the environment, consuming tremendous amounts of resources and leaving devastation and destruction behind in its wake. Clean-Origin, lab-created diamonds are created in an eco-conscious manner that is much kinder to the environment, promoting environmental stewardship and sustainability and ultimately, helping to preserve and protect our beautiful planet.
While the mining of diamonds uses more than 126 gallons of water per carat, lab-grown diamonds only use only 18 gallons of water per carat. Lab-created diamonds are also much of the time produced with renewable energy. Mined diamonds leave a prodigious carbon footprint, emitting 125 pounds of carbon for every single carat, while lab-grown diamonds use only 6 pounds of carbon in contrast.
Mining of diamonds is also extremely disruptive to the land, disturbing approximately 100 square feet of land and yielding nearly 6,000 pounds of mineral waste for every carat that is mined. In comparison, lab-grown diamonds disrupt only 0.07 square feet of land per carat and produce only 1 pound of mineral waste.
Ethically Sourced
It is no secret that the traditional mining of diamonds is a perilous industry, subjecting mining workers to inhumane conditions that put their lives at risk and as well as violate human rights. Diamond mines are fraught with calamity, threatening workers’ health and leading to profuse amounts of injury. All in all, mined diamonds result in 1 injury for every 1,000 workers annually, while lab grown diamonds result in zero. By cutting out the mining of diamonds entirely, lab-grown diamonds are conflict-free, ethically-driven and sourced to protect human rights.
Competitively Priced
Not only are lab-grown diamonds more kind to the environment — they are kinder to your wallet as well. Lab-created diamonds are subject to the same standards as mined diamonds and in terms of the way they are cut, polished and inspected, the costs of each are equivalent. Therefore, the difference in price between the two comes down to the fact that the diamond mining industry involves a long and complex supply chain that adds on expenses, while lab-grown diamonds cut out the mining process altogether creating an ultimately, much shorter supply chain. While no diamond is free, lab-grown diamonds’ shorter supply chain accounts for a 20 to 30% decrease in their price from that of mined diamonds.
