Depression, as well as other neuro-psychiatric disorders, are believed to result from a dysfunction in one or more areas of the brain, expressed through imbalance in the multiple chemicals that regulate the functions of this very highly complicated organ. The purpose of any treatment provided is to restore the normal levels of these chemicals as well as maintain the balance between them, this can be accomplished through chemical manipulation such as the case with the utilization of medications or through physical manipulation, such as the case with TMS.
The coil that is used in this treatment provides a magnetic field that the brain cells (neurons) turn back into electric pulses which in turn can modify the functions of those neurons, restoring them to normalcy.
TMS is APPROVED by the FDA for treatment of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Although the first line of treatment for these conditions remains the use of medications and psychotherapy; a significant number of patients would either not respond to these treatments or develop severe side effects that they can not live with, at which time TMS becomes the logical second line of intervention. While depression and OCD are the only two indications approved by the FDA; there is growing evidence that this treatment can be effective for other neuropsychiatric disorders such as attention deficit disorder, autism, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder and dementia to name a few.

Research shows just how important a good night’s sleep is to mental and physical health. The impact of sleep’s quality and quantity is multifaceted and profound.
ranscranial Magnetic Stimulation is now accepted as a highly effective, well tolerated and non-invasive intervention for the treatment of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Although the idea of using electric stimulation for the purpose of modifying the functions of the brain is not a new concept, it was in the past ridden with multiple difficulties, such as the inability to target specific areas of the brain in order to prevent unwanted side effects that results from stimulating large areas or even the whole brain, as it is the case with Electric Convulsive Therapy (ECT).
It was not until the early 80’s that magnetic field was used to stimulate specific areas of the brain safely and effectively, which ultimately developed into the technology that we have today.
