Explore Four Fabulous Styles to Beautify Your Bedroom
Get cozy this winter with Copenhagen
The Rio Small Side Table brings a touch of nature to your modern living space
If you’re looking to breathe new life into your home but don’t know where to start, think of where you spend most of your time. If your mind conjures up an image of sinking into comfy sheets, then you’re on the right track – we spend nearly half of our lifetimes lying in bed. Thus, it follows that designing the perfect bedroom is crucial for your overall well-being. If that sounds like a daunting task, Copenhagen Imports has done the hard work for you.
We spoke with two interior designers from Copenhagen’s Scottsdale location, Katayoon Aghili and Tamara “T.J.” Johnson, about creating bedrooms that combine personal style with endless relaxation.
As an independent interior designer, Katayoon Aghili was so impressed with Copenhagen that she joined the staff over two decades ago. She believes creating a bedroom is among the most important decisions an individual or couple can make.
If you want to feel, see, and breathe comfort, then a bedroom full of upholstered furniture is right for you. Because of its physical softness and luxurious look, upholstery is popular and easily meets relaxation needs. Different upholstery designs can also help define your style – from chic diamond quilting to natural fabric or buttery leather, the material you choose can have a big impact.
“The beauty of an upholstered bed is that you don’t need a traditional matching nightstand,” says Aghili. “You can take a stunning all-upholstered bed like the Fresi King in deep blue leather and then use matching side tables like the Rio, which I love.”
To choose a nightstand, Aghili recommends exploring different tones and finishes – like wood or ceramic marble – and seeing what coordinates best with the existing colors and textures in the room.
Aghili also recommends a chaise lounge, like the Caveoso Chaise Lounge in white leather, for those wanting a casual daytime spot to relax – or even a convenient surface to fold clothes.
For adorning your walls, Aghili suggests a V. Klauss Painting.
“I love a juxtaposition of old world and modern between a room’s upholstery and its accessories,” she says. “That’s what gives a good design its soul. Your home is your sanctuary – be creative and enjoy the journey.”
Cozy Wood
“Your bedroom is the one space that truly belongs to you and/or the person you share it with,” Aghili says. “So naturally, this space should please you visually, emotionally and physically. The bedroom should be opulent, inviting and free of clutter.”
Like Aghili, Tamara “T.J.” Johnson began her interior design career as a freelancer before joining Copenhagen in 2020. A judge (and past winner) of the ASID Design Excellence Award, she says Copenhagen “is hot in the marketplace with the selection of furniture found in our showroom.”
Johnson suggests there are many elements to consider when designing a bedroom, including room dimensions, budget, and even, for a couple, who sleeps on what side of the bed and if there are pre-sleep rituals like reading in bed or relaxing on other furniture.
“The foremost considerations are ‘who is the room for?’ and ‘how will it be used?’” she says.
With this in mind, Aghili and Johnson have curated four style themes – Upholstered Elegance, Cozy Wood, Cool and Contemporary, and Eclectic Maximalist – to transform your bedroom into a sanctuary.
For a bedroom that you can count on, nothing beats the durability, timelessness, and warmth of wood. Whether it’s the classic look of walnut, the richness of teak, or the sustainable style of bamboo, wood is an attractive and versatile choice for bedrooms.
“If a client is more into spirituality, loves nature or appreciates the simplicity and elegance of natural products,” Aghili says, “I recommend beautiful wood furniture with a more monochromatic color palette.”
Aghili suggests the Nueva Bed paired with a Toronto King Mattress, Marvin Dresser and Mackena Table Lamp to achieve this ambiance. The design of the Marvin Dresser puts the full texture and tones of the walnut wood on display with its wide, flat panels, whereas a bed like the Nueva has clean lines that accentuate the wood’s smoothness.
Also consider bringing functional accents into your bedroom through lighting or additional furnishings. Lamps with warm light and organic forms further enhance the appearance of wood, while a lounge chair can turn a bare corner into a cozy nook.
“The Mackena Table Lamp has a hand-chiseled marble edge that complements the organic feel of a cozy wood bedroom. I also recommend the Crystal Table Lamp, which has a clear base that resembles a stack of river rocks,” Aghili adds.
The French Blue Wall Art uses vibrant shades of blue to depict abstract figures against a white background.

The Fresi King Bed will infuse any bedroom with an atmosphere of luxury and comfort.
Upholstered Elegance
Diana also believes leather can add tremendously to the ambiance. “Leather can certainly be very cozy. People can shy away from it, but a good leather will breathe and be warm in the winter. Think of your parents’ or grandparents’ chair that was well worn in and felt so comforting to sit in with a favorite book or mug of hot chocolate.” Embody coziness through color with tones of cognac and brandy leather, which keep it neutral while also adding a quality of richness and warmth.
A few well-chosen tweaks or additions may be all you need to turn your home into a haven for spring and summer. As Diana said, pay particular attention to pieces like rugs, chairs, or accent pillows that can be switched out for ones with a more seasonal pattern or color, like bright pastels or light neutrals. Also consider what new materials you can welcome into your home for the warmer months. Why not try Diana's recommendation for linen, leather, or other organic elements to spruce up your space? As you plan to transition your home for every season of the year, visit the Copenhagen website or your nearest showroom in Tucson, Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Gilbert, AZ or San Antonio or Austin, TX to see what’s possible.
“It’s always good to combine different elements,” she says. “You have to include something organic that blends well with statement accessories from nature, like live or artificial plants, for example. You should also combine different textures on your furnishings, such as mixing leather with fabrics.” A soft velvet pillow like the Isabel offsets the smoothness of leather, while the jacquard-style weave of Copenhagen’s art pillows brings dimension and bold color that complement both leather and fabric upholstery.
Diana is especially fond of the Pacific Console Table, comprised of natural wood in gray and teak tones. The table stands on a cluster of driftwood-type pieces to add a unique and organic feel to the room.
“Both Scandinavians and Europeans deal with changing environments all the time, giving them experience warming and cooling their homes with accessories. I like to take inspiration from them and think how I can make my interior welcoming for others. I advise my clients to discover objects that will open the room wonderfully during a gathering of family or friends.”
Bursting with a rainbow of bright hues, the Sophia Wall Art is vibrant, expressive, and larger than life.
“Wood is in our DNA, it is part of nature and part of us," Diana says. "After all, we have been making things with wood from the beginning of civilization. Our connection with objects made of the elements from the outdoors creates a deep resonance that everyone can appreciate. Many people like the clean look of glass and metal. However, bringing in some wood, even a decorative bowl, can do a lot to add warmth while keeping it simple. I have an abstract bowl from Copenhagen at home and a statue that are both carved from wood, and they’re all I need for decoration."

Diana speaks fondly of her quarter century of work in the Copenhagen showroom. For her, every day presents a new decorating challenge, with families and individuals bringing all levels of experience and interests to the selection process. She especially loves seeing new customers discover high-quality, contemporary Scandinavian and European furniture, accessories and art.

In contrast, a cool and contemporary bedroom thrives on spatial discipline. If subtlety is your middle name, then you’ll enjoy a bedroom that incorporates clean lines with minimal ornamentation and more of a defined edge. Products that have a glossy finish or a monochromatic color scheme will also help to create a bedroom that feels light, airy, and updated.
“Imagine soft green wall paint adorning a brightly lit room with the Bella Vita Queen Bed as the focal point,” says T.J. Johnson. “Add a botanical print above the bed, then add a simple nightstand like the Sprint Side Table and perhaps a dressing mirror like the Flora Square Mirror.”
“A mirror isn’t just pragmatic,” Johnson adds. “It can add a subtle edge to the overall atmosphere, as well as a sense of airiness and space. As always, a soft area rug under the bed grounds the look. Finally, dress the bed in organic greens, light blues, soft taupes and greys to pull together a beautiful, sleek, minimalist design.”
Johnson suggests choosing a high-pile rug – so you start each day stepping on a soft surface –that matches the accent colors in the room for a balanced look.
Cool and Contemporary
Eclectic Maximalist
For a bedroom that is as unique as you, we suggest an eclectic mix of textures, patterns, and prints. This type of bedroom style is ideal for those wanting to update their bedroom with key new designs, while also spotlighting a special keepsake or bedroom piece. Start with choosing your focal point and begin incorporating eye-catching surroundings.
Johnson believes eclectic maximalist design appeals most to someone who loves to travel the world and collect items that don’t necessarily go together.
“In the scheme of things, these items can all come together with textures, colors, paint or wallpaper,” she says. “An eclectic approach allows interesting accessories to captivate your attention.”
Johnson starts with the bed as the room’s focal point, then builds out from there. “Perhaps pair the Bella Clara King Bed with two Avita Night Tables and, if there is room, add a pair of Evie Swivel Glider Chairs. We could then install fun artwork like the Sophia Wall Art to highlight the textures of the nightstands and lamps. Art is a powerful tool for the eclectic maximalist to fully express their personality. Lastly, ground the bed with a gorgeous area rug, then pull it all together with bedding and pillows.”
Johnson believes the “less is more” rule is key when designing a bedroom, even with an eclectic maximalist aesthetic.
“Having a room that matches exactly can be boring,” she says. “However, be careful with your space planning. Don’t overstuff every corner and cranny. White space is very positive, especially in a smaller room.”
As a finishing touch, evaluate the comfort of your mattress to get the best night’s sleep possible. It’s important to determine what feels right for your body and Copenhagen’s Art de Vivre line has mattresses that range from firm to plush.
Aghili and Johnson encourage clients to bring in their room dimensions to Copenhagen, where associates can utilize Floorplanner, a virtual design platform, to create room models and help clients visualize the finished space.
“Clients love working with Copenhagen because of our great furniture and accessory collection,” Johnson says. “Our designers can draw to scale, we’re all good listeners, and our top priority is giving the client the best shopping and design experience possible.”
