The Pressure To Win
“It’s also OK to step away from something that no longer brings joy. If your child’s sport has become a source of stress, maybe it’s time for them to take a break and try some different extracurricular activities.”

Put aside a little me time this week.
Just because you’ve got the title of parent, doesn’t mean you’re a superhero. Managing your emotions is important, but so is self-care. Being honest when you need help not only helps you, it provides your children with an important example they can then add to their coping toolbox.
SELF-CARE CORNER
The Experts Say…
“When it’s time for your athlete to eat, try to pair protein and carbs together. Protein maintains muscle and helps to build lean body mass, and carbs provide fuel for energy. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Perfect.”
- Pam Rosow, Sports Nutritionist, and Jennifer Zarrilli, Manager of Clinical Nutrition, Connecticut Children’s

Get the toolkit
Our experts have lots of tips and tricks to support kids on their health journeys.
Here, we’ve gathered our best advice for parents when it comes to staying prepared.
Prepare for care
Ask about confidentiality (Is it okay for me to see you without my parents in the room? Will I get in trouble because of anything I tell you? Will you tell my parents what we talk about?)
Ask about support (Is _____ normal? Can we talk about _____? Can you help me find support for _____?)
Ask about a diagnosis (Is it serious? What causes it? Can I give this illness to someone else?)
Ask about medicines and tests (What does this do? Are there any risks or side effects? What side effects or changes should I call you about?)
Questions your teen can ask
Reassure your teen they can trust their doctor with topics like sexuality, body image, substance abuse, and bullying.
Encourage your teen to write down questions to bring.
Practice conversations with your teen to help them get a feel for what they want to express.
How to prepare
Preparing your teen for their upcoming doctor's appointment
TOOLKIT
Ease your child into new surroundings by showing them pictures, driving by, or asking the office to walk through the building or exam room before a visit.
Explain what will happen at the appointment both verbally and visually.
Encourage communication and problem solving by reviewing the steps of an appointment ahead of time.
Practice at home by helping your child act out the steps of the visit as best you can.
Explain how the visit will fit into your child's day.
Plan a fun activity or reward for after the visit like going to lunch or playing with a special toy.
Check in with your child during the visit by praising them and encouraging them to ask for what they need.
Start practicing now! The more time your child has to get used to new information, the more comfortable they'll feel.
How to prepare
Preparing kids with special needs for doctor’s appointments
TOOLKIT
Dress your baby in something that’s easy to remove.
Bring questions!
Plan to leave at least 15 minutes early.
How to prepare
Test results like the bloodspot screen, blood oxygen level and hearing tests, and a hepatitis B vaccine.
A head-to-toe physical exam.
Your doctor will also cover sleep, feeding, baby's digestion, and changes to expect in the coming months.
What to expect
Insurance card and hospital documents.
A summary of your family’s health history.
Baby supplies.
