As with most things in Connecticut, it’s probably a good idea to start along the coastline throughout the I-95 corridor. Between Mystic’s Seaport Museum and Aquarium, there are plenty of indoor things to do for an educational yet engaging visit. And even if you aren’t applying for admission, a visit to Yale University is a rewarding experience for art lovers and history buffs alike. Once you’ve conquered the maritime history found along the coast, it’s time to move north further into the state. Up in the capital of Hartford you’ll find Hartford Stage, one of the most award-winning and celebrated small theaters in all of New England.
Since its launch in 2000, the Norwalk, Conn.-based nonprofit organization has served a whopping 7 million children and families by creating active, multi-sensory, playful experiences that foster a lifelong love of learning. The museum’s multifaceted approach enables children’s healthy development, emphasizing the achievement of language and literacy skills while enhancing physical and social-emotional growth and well-being. With Long Island Sound to the south and the wooded expanses of the Berkshires to the north, Connecticut is a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The best part is that nothing is too far from anything else in Connecticut, so you can go for a hike in the woods in the morning, then drive to the coast lobster rolls and a kayak ride in the afternoon. There’s a lot to choose from, so it all comes down to what you want to choose. Here, we’ve put together some of our greatest hits of outdoor adventures in Connecticut. It’s pretty hard to go wrong with coastal Connecticut, especially in the warmer months, so we suggest starting your adventure with a kayak rental or scenic lighthouse boat tour—most of these activities are found especially in the New Haven, New London and Mystic areas. After you’ve experienced Connecticut’s connection to the sea, it’s time to head north into the woods for hiking, biking, and river canoeing.

Boy oh boy, we hope you came hungry. There is no shortage of delectable cuisine in Connecticut, whether you’re looking for an infamous steamed cheeseburger or an internationally renowned, multi-course gastronomy experience. And eating your way through the state is one of the best ways to get to know about its history, whether that’s through piping hot thin-crust “apizza” in New Haven, warm lobster rolls in Mystic, or your new favorite varietal on the Connecticut Wine Trail. This state loves its food—and you’ll walk away from this staycation loving it, too.

There’s a long standing feud between Ted’s Restaurant in Meriden and O’Rourke’s Diner in Middletown about who invented the steamed cheeseburger, so naturally the only way to pick a winner is to try both. Once you’ve sampled central Connecticut’s most famous fare, head south to the coast, where the warm buttered lobster rolls of New London and Mystic can’t be beat. And of course, the thin-crust pizza in New Haven is unforgettable—just don’t forget the “a” when you order an “apizza”; that way you’ll blend in with the locals.

Nobody does the backyard vacation like Connecticut. ANYONE WHO HAS SPENT time in the Northeast — traveler, transplant, or otherwise — describes their location within the orbit of two cities: Boston and New York City, regardless of if they actually live in either. This is especially true of New Haven, Connecticut, situated less than two hours between both cities and easily reachable by train. While few people outside of Connecticut know anything about New Haven beyond Yale University, this small city is home to a thriving, multi-cultural community that includes some of the country’s smartest and most creative thinkers. Us Connecticutians — that’s a sweet name we’ve got to start owning — are tired of telling travelers, “I’m from somewhere between Boston and New York” and hoping they figure it out. But we’re hedging our bets that soon, we won’t have to. New Haven is poised to become one of the great cosmopolitan capitals of the Northeast. Here are just a few reasons why you’ll enjoy a day trip to New Haven — and why you may just want to move here.

It’s home to an innovation mega-center.
If your only mental picture of Connecticut contains church steeples and cobblestone streets, your first stop in New Haven needs to be District, a 9-acre tech and innovation campus. It’s part food and beer hall, part event center, part co-working space, and it serves as both an entertainment hub and a place to access outdoor activities on the Mill River Trail. The spot is full of forward-thinking, industry-building, next-gen makers helping shape the future of the state and beyond. And because this is New Haven and not New York, they actually want to talk to you. The facility hosts inspiring events and speakers each week and has a gym onsite. You can mingle at its coworking space, get inspired, and keep the momentum rolling at the onsite BBQ restaurant, The Stack, or the bar which features bar games and trivia, and gets popping around happy hour.
While District may be shaping the future of Connecticut, it’s tough to know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been. There’s no better place to learn about New Haven’s (and our nation’s) history than around the Green and Yale University. Here, international students descend on the campus each year, bringing a myriad of cultures together into one small city. Founded prior to the American Revolution in 1701, Yale is the third-oldest institution of higher learning in the US and boasts alumni like inventors Samuel F. B. Morse (morse code) and Eli Whitney (cotton gin), both Hillary and Bill Clinton, and actors Edward Norton and Jodie Foster.
Yale University and the New Haven Green are chock full of art and history.
Yale’s campus is situated primarily around the New Haven Green, which was dedicated a National Historic Landmark District for its three architecturally significant 19th-century churches. The Green hosts the International Festival of Arts & Ideas each June to celebrate the world’s greatest artists and thinkers with a festival of performing arts, concerts, and discussions. Yale’s museums host extensive collections, all of which are open to the public and many of which are free to enter. If you’re short on time, focus on the Yale University Art Gallery, the United States’ oldest university museum which holds over 200,000 objects ranging from ancient to modern origins, including masterpieces by Van Gogh and Picasso. Another favorite is the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, which houses a collection of the first books printed using moveable type in the West, including one of the 15th-century Gutenberg Bibles. Not far from the Green and the museums sits the nation’s first chartered burial ground, the Grove Street Cemetery. African-American Civil War veterans, the lawyer who argued for the Amistad slaves imprisoned in the city, the fathers of American football and American medical ethics, and the only person to have signed all four basic documents of American sovereignty (including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution) are all buried here.
You’re going to work up an appetite exploring the downtown area. As the city works to attract younger travelers and families, environmentally and socially conscious cafes have popped up across town, many near the campus while others are spread out throughout town and down by the wharf. Claire’s Corner Copia opened in 1975 just off the New Haven Green and is known for vegetarian food and smoothies. The less health-conscious can have breakfast at The Pantry, a local favorite for simple, tasty egg dishes and decadent brunch fare like cinnamon roll pancakes. Beyond cafes, New Haven boasts some significant claims to fame in the culinary world, including the first hamburger. Louis’ Lunch is recognized by the Library of Congress as the home of the very first hamburger sandwich. Legend has it that some guy in 1900 ran up to proprietor Louis Lassen asking for a meal he could eat on the run. Louis tossed his unique blend of steak trimmings between two pieces of toast, and the burger was born. It’s still slinging patties the same way, served without condiments and only cheese, tomato, and onion as acceptable garnishes. If it’s your first time, try out Louis’ lingo by ordering “two cheese works, a salad, and a birch.” The staff will whip you up two hamburgers with cheese, tomato, and onion, cooked medium rare on toast, with an order of potato salad and a birch beer — the quintessential New Haven meal. Miya’s Sushi, on Howe Street, claims to be the world’s first “plant-based & sustainable sushi restaurant.” Its extensive, ever-changing menu is built around invasive plant and animal species, and you’ll find some unique ingredients like bugs from time to time. The restaurant’s late-night specials — after 9:00 PM on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and after 10:00 PM Thursday to Saturday — make the menu uniquely affordable among downtown sushi spots.
The city has left its mark on American gastronomy.
After dinner, if you’re not already there, make your way downtown to check out the bar scene. Start by grabbing a cocktail at New Haven’s oldest tavern, Ordinary, which has been making a mean cocktail since the 1600s. The pub can get packed, but if you’re by yourself and looking for a conversation starter, ask about the tunnels that run to other buildings downtown beneath the tavern that was once frequented by founding fathers and famous actors. If you’re with a group, take them to experience a bit of beautiful auditory chaos played up close and personal by both local and international musicians. New Haven has a super vibrant live music scene, and it’s centered around jazz. Wednesday shows are free at The Owl Shop while Firehouse 12 offers paid tickets and season passes to shows, including the 2019 Spring Jazz Series. If live theatre is more your thing, look up what’s playing at the Shubert and Long Wharf theaters. Both showcase international and multicultural talent and performances, many of which move on to Broadway and off-Broadway in that big city to the south.
The nightlife is a bit classier than a typical college town.

CONNECTICUT is packed with great things to do for both kids and adults. From exploring its scenic coastline via a backcountry drive to museums and historic sites, these are eight of the essential experiences to have while visiting the Constitution State.
1. Take a walk through history at Mark Twain’s house.
Visit the Mark Twain House and Museum on Farmington Avenue. From 1874 to 1891, this was the home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens and his family and said to be where some of his most productive writing took place. Here, he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Tramp Abroad and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. Adjacent to the house sits the museum, which includes a rotating exhibition hall, a theater showing a mini-documentary of Twain, classroom space, a lecture hall-style auditorium, a store and a cafe. There’s also a research library available by appointment only.

Opened in 1963, the Goodspeed Opera House has produced more than 250 new and newly revived musicals on their main stage and their second stage in Chester, CT. Today, it’s the first regional theater in America to earn two special Tony Awards, one in 1980 for outstanding contributions to the American musical and a second in 1995 for distinguished achievement for a regional theatre. Past productions have included Bye Bye Birdie, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
2. Grab yourself a seat at the Tony Award-winning Goodspeed Opera House.
After you’re done exploring Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport, venture downtown for some shopping, dining and a really authentic local experience: watching the bridge open. At regular intervals (and on-demand during the slower months), the drawbridge on Main Street lifts up toward the sky allowing larger boats and ships to pass. A loud siren signals that the bridge will be opening soon. The road and sidewalks close and passerby everywhere stop and rush to get a better view.
3. Watch the bridge rise and fall in downtown Mystic.
Yale University is a huge part of the fabric of downtown New Haven, but you don’t have to be a Yalie to visit it. Check out the quad, Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery, among other nonresidential buildings open to the public. Once you’re done touring the grounds, grab a bite at one of the many varieties of restaurants in the area.
4. Explore the grounds of Yale University.
This is a rite of passage for any Connecticut local during the fall months. Every year Lyman Orchards announces a new theme for their corn maze, which encompasses roughly 4 acres. Once you find yourself out amongst civilization again, don’t forget to make a pit stop into their marketplace. Do not skip grabbing a bite of their fresh baked apple cider donuts and remember to bring a pie home for the family.
5. Get lost in the corn maze at Lyman Orchards.
Founded in 1842 and opened in 1844, the Wadsworth Atheneum is the oldest continually operating public art museum in the US. It’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum, which is located in Hartford, CT, features nearly 50,000 works of art. Everything from Roman antiques and European impressionist paintings to modern masterpieces and the Samuel Colt firearms collection can be found within the hallways.

If you consider yourself a bibliophile or are just looking for a quiet place to enjoy a cup of Joe, head to R.J. Julia Booksellers for all that and more. For more than 25 years, this independent bookstore has sat in this sleepy section of Madison, CT and prides itself on, as they say, “putting the right book in the right hands.” As a business, they’ve won several prestigious awards like the Publishers Weekly Best Bookseller of the Year and Connecticut Magazine’s Best Bookstore. R.J. Julia’s also hosts roughly 300 events a year, including book readings, author talks and story time.
7. Find a good spot (and a good book) at R. J. Julia’s.
The restored wooden carousel has 36 hand-carved jumper horses, 12 stationary horses, two chariots and a Wurlitzer 153 band organ. The carousel operates May through mid-October and also by special appointment for private parties.

The vibe is relaxed yet refined, and there are ample opportunities here for long walks on the beach, lazy afternoons strolling down cobblestoned streets, visiting museums, and indulging in world-class seafood. New London Lighthouse Tours are an educational and engaging introduction to the region’s rich history. And if you have a sweet tooth, a trip to the PEZ Visiting Center shouldn’t be missed. The fun continues all year long with Thimble Island Cruises, which offer everything from narrated sightseeing to foliage tours to seal-watching excursions. And if you’re the type to prefer paddling your own boat, then opt for a Sunset Paddle Tour and Campfire in scenic Old Lyme, where a watery adventure comes to a picturesque and relaxing end around the campfire. Not sure where to start? The good news is that there is no right or wrong answer—each coastal town has its own character and charms, so take your time and explore to find the one you like best.

Country roads, rolling hills, the beauty of a sunset over sweeping farmland—if you’re looking for Connecticut’s pastoral charms, Litchfield County is where to find them. This special area has long attracted city folk and Connecticut locals alike for its laid-back, unpretentious atmosphere. Of course, there is plenty of farm fun to be had, perhaps with a horseback ride at Lee’s Riding Stable or by picking up some delectable chocolates made with local ingredients at Thorncrest Farm or perusing the begonias and roses at White Flower Farm, widely considered one of the top sources for plants in the country. Wherever your adventures lead you, make sure to dedicate at least an entire afternoon at outdoor sculpture garden Hogpen Hill Farms, a 284-acre pasture filled with contemporary statues that complement the landscape. Kids and adults alike can find adventures at Quassy Amusement & Waterpark, where you can find your thrills on the retro-inspired Wooden Warrior roller coaster. Whatever you choose, a visit to Litchfield Hills is like visiting another era—you’ll be amazed at how close it is, yet how transported you will feel.

The beating heart of Connecticut, Fairfield County is where you’ll find stately homes, beautiful architecture, and much of the culture that proves this area is so much more than just a bedroom community for New York City. The Phillip Johnson Glass House is one of the country’s best-preserved examples of midcentury-modern architecture and a great place for a picnic or to catch a live music show during the warmer months. Thanks to the number of affluent communities in this area, New Milford’s Elephant’s Trunk Flea Market offers some of the best antiquing in the Northeast. And kids of all ages will be thrilled with a visit to either the Beardsley Zoo or the Maritime Aquarium, both of which offer world-class exhibits and interactive programing for adults and little ones alike. Fairfield County is also home to some unusual museums. In Stamford, the Walker Library of the History of Human Imagination has a range of curiosities you can’t find anywhere else, such as an original Russian space satellite from the 1950s, authentic 17th-century atlases, and one of two known facsimile copies of the original 1776 Declaration of Independence. And if you’re a horror junky, the Zaffis Museum of the Paranormal in Stratford offers some tantalizing, can’t-miss delights. But no matter how you break it down, it’s clear that there is much more to Fairfield County than meets the eye.

It’s amazing how unique the various regions of Connecticut are. Central and Northern Connecticut, located halfway between New York City and Boston—as well as halfway between Long Island Sound to the south and the Berkshires to the north—have a unique flavor all their own. There’s a little bit of everything here, from international cuisines to taste to historic homes to explore. Meet some farmers and put together a DIY picnic with fresh produce from the Ellington Farmers Market, or maybe tour the area’s numerous craft breweries onboard the Hard Hittin Beer Shuttle. Looking for something a little more kid friendly? Bring the young ones on a visit to The Dinosaur Place at Nature’s Art Village, as well as Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park, both of which combine education with engagement for a worthwhile experience the whole family can enjoy. After dark, it’s time for a socially distanced movie theater experience at the delightfully retro Mansfield Drive-In Movie Theater.
It doesn’t matter if you stick to the shoreline or head up into the hills of Litchfield County, this is the kind of place that has infinite layers to explore. From romantic dinners for two overlooking the Long Island Sound to a fun-filled family afternoon in Hartford, there are many adventures to be had and memories to be made—and all of them are within reach when you’re here in Connecticut.

WHERE TO DRINK WINE IN CONNECTICUT
Haight-Brown Vineyards
Connecticut’s oldest winery does a fantastic job of using local New England flavors. The Honey Nut Apple, a white sweet and spicy apple wine flavored with local honey and cinnamon, is a good companion during a New England autumn. www.haightbrownwine.com 29 Chestnut Hill Road, Litchfield, CT 06759

In going along with his Portuguese origins, Manny Miranda offers up a white port-style dessert wine called Vinho Fino. If you’re lucky enough to pick up a bottle (availability is extremely limited), expect the sweet taste of peaches, plums, and apricots. www.mirandavineyard.com 42 Ives Road, Goshen, CT 06756

THE STATE of Connecticut is home two American Viticultural Areas (AVAs): Western Connecticut Highlands and Southeastern New England. AVA is wine-nerd speak for a government-designated grape-growing region in the United States with specific geographical features (soil, climate, elevation). For comparison purposes, California is home to 107 of the 188 established AVAs in the United States. Wine snobs love to critique the quality of Connecticut (and New England in general) wines. In my opinion, the enjoyment of wine comes down to a matter of taste and the experience of drinking offerings from different parts of the United States. Objectively comparing Connecticut wines to those of a legendary wine-producing region such as Napa or Sonoma — or, going further, Piedmont or Burgundy – misses the point, and shouldn’t be the process by which a wine is judged. When I drink wine, I simply enjoy working to break down the various tasting notes that hit my palate. And when I’m drinking in my home state of Connecticut, it’s probably at one of these six places.
The best-selling and very inexpensive Seaport White is a great summer sipping wine for coastal New England. A refreshing off-dry white wine (Cayuga & Chardonnay blend), it’s the go-to bottle for Stonington and is priced for the masses. www.stoningtonvineyards.com 523 Taugwonk Road, Stonington, Connecticut 06378

This winery is mostly known for their semi-sweet Blustery Blend and Cayuga White wines — however, my recommendation here is for something more unique. In the summer, Sunset Meadow concocts a “merlita”, which is an ice slushy using their Merlot. Pretty much a perfect glass on a hot summer day while listening to live music on their outdoor stone patio. www.sunsetmeadowvineyards.com 599 Old Middle Street, Goshen, CT 06756

Paradise Hills has a newly renovated tasting room and outdoor seating area with a heavy Tuscan vibe. Their TRIO blended red is my pick at this winery — very spicy flavors with notes of plum and berry. Another good thing about Paradise Hills is they usually keep their doors open pretty late with live music. www.paradisehillsvineyard.com 15 Windswept Hill Road, Wallingford, CT 06492

A great venue for a large group of friends or for meeting new people. Gouveia’s tasting room features long tables to encourage a small-town European community feel, inspired by the head winemaker’s childhood. Their Cabernet Franc is full-bodied, with wood-like and raspberry aromas that would go perfectly with beef or lamb. www.gouveiavineyards.com 1339 Whirlwind Hill Road, Wallingford, CT 06492
