Carole and Lucille began their friendship at a craft cocktail class hosted at the lifestyle house in Del Webb at Legacy Hills, an active adult living community in Celina, TX.
“Three drinks in and we were a little giggly,” Carole recalls.
Lucille interjects, “Well, we’re always a little giggly.”
It’s the easy banter of best friends at first sight. After the event, the pair exchanged numbers. So when Lucille had a medical event shortly after, she called Carole, who brought her to the ER.
“The nurses asked us how long we’d been best friends,” says Carole.
“Two weeks,” they both say at the same time, laughing.
Del Webb active adult 55+ developments have a reputation for fostering these kinds of tight-knit communities—a common refrain at Legacy, says Carole, is “if the lights are on, just come on in, it’s a party.” America's leading builder of homes for active adults has several locations in the Dallas-area alone: Del Webb at Legacy Hills in Celina and Del Webb at Trinity Falls in McKinney are both open now, Del Webb Sonoma Verde in the Rockwall area plans to open in early 2027, and another, Del Webb Lakesong, spanning Grand Prairie and Midlothian slated to open in 2027.
Each Del Webb location features a resort style pool, amenity center, fitness center, movement studio, pickle ball courts, and plenty of events hosted by a dedicated Lifestyle Director. Elizabeth Stauffer, Legacy’s LD, is always planning something new.
“She’s incredible,” says Carole. “She knows more than any one person should know.”
“She is so creative and so knowledgeable,” adds Lucille. “She's always here!”
For the two best friends, living at Legacy means there’s never a dull moment. Whether that means meeting for their morning exercise class, playing cards at the lounge in the amenity center, singing Karaoke, or just living the good life at other friends’ homes, Carole and Lucille stay active. They also mention the importance of the support they’ve found at Legacy, from talks on grief to discussion classes at weekly gatherings. They even volunteer through Legacy’s Sunshine Club, which delivers meals to grieving families.
This list is just what happens inside the community. In each other, Carole and Lucille have found travel partners, too. When we spoke, they were headed out for a weekend in Fort Worth to celebrate Lucille’s birthday. Next year, Lucille is tagging along with a couple she met at Legacy as they take a cruise down the Nile in Egypt. But no matter where their travels take them, they know where home is. On a recent trip back to New York, Lucille called Carole to tell her she missed Texas.
At any Del Webb community, your next chapter is built around how you want to live. That philosophy takes physical form in the builder's exclusive GenYou™ floor plans, a single-story lineup designed around lifestyle—cooking, entertaining, hosting out-of-town guests, taking up a new hobby. At Del Webb Sonoma Verde, there is even an option on some plans to add a second story loft, perfect for grandkid sleepovers! Every plan comes standard with the kind of thoughtful features that make a house work for decades: zero-entry showers, widened hallways, point-of-use storage, and open, flowing living spaces.
At Legacy Hills, those plans become a study in how the same footprint can hold two very different lives. Carole Brinkman bought a quick move-in home, ready when she was; Lucille Forrest Bauer designed and built hers from the ground up on a larger hilltop lot with sunset views. Yet the bones are strikingly similar—two bedrooms, a flexible extra room, a two-car garage, everything on one level with no stairs to negotiate. What strikes Lucille most is how little is wasted. Even the smaller homes, she notes, are laid out so well there's no dead space, and no two look alike—a far cry from the cookie-cutter sameness she'd seen elsewhere, where whole streets wore the same roof in the same color.
Yet a well-designed house is only ever the frame. Ask the two women what makes Legacy Hills home, and they'll tell you it isn't just the square footage, the amenity center, nor the bass pond (well, it’s a little bit the bass pond, Lucille concedes).
"The biggest bonus here is people," Carole says.

The Del Webb Difference
By Josie Brocato on October 1, 2026
Best friends who first meet over cocktails isn't a rare story. Finding lasting friendship and a whole community later in life is.
“If the lights are on, just come on in, it’s a party.”

The Del Webb Difference
Carole and Lucille’s Legacy experience is proof of how quickly strangers become family here. The friends marvel at how a friend’s husband installed dimmer switches in exchange for homemade cookies, how neighbors tend the yard and mind Lucille’s hummingbird feeders while she travels, and how women reach out to the newly widowed because they remember what it felt like.
For Lucille, who came to Texas after losing her husband, Del Webb at Legacy Hills has become a homecoming of a different kind. “You are here,” Carole told her when they were first getting to know one another. “You're part of the family now.”
Or, as one neighbor put it at a community meeting, “We are here to be happy. That's the bottom line.” It’s a line the two friends keep returning to. It’s a line that feels like home.
