Wine and Jazz Play Beautifully Together in Healdsburg This June
The 2022 Artist in Residence, harpist Destiny Muhammad, will perform an intimate dinner show on Wednesday at Little Saint. The farm-direct, seasonal menu is created by world-renowned Chef Kyle Connaughton, a Three Star Michelin chef, and local favorite Chef Bryan Oliver who designed a menu inspired by jazz and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. Wednesday also launches the Late Concert, a Healdsburg Jazz favorite. The late concerts start at 9 or 9:30 throughout the weekend, a great way to send off the evening on a high note. A favorite space for improvisation and innovation, Mads Tolling & The Mads Men featuring Kenny Washington play on Wednesday and Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini on Thursday, along with The Howard Wiley Organ Quartet will be joined by poet Tongo Eisen-Martin on Friday night. Drummer Sylvia Cuenca, jazz pianist Joe Gilman and bassist Essiet Okon Essiet are sure to mix it up with surprise guests at the Spirit Bar Late Night Jam.
On Saturday, the morning starts with a free concert at the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market with our Futures All-stars, and the music continues into the afternoon with a concert at St. Paul’s featuring the Destiny Muhammad Quartet and the Freedom Jazz Choir.
Sundays are often considered a getaway day at music festivals. Not so at Healdsburg Jazz. The entire community is invited to the free Juneteenth Celebration in the Plaza for a day of music and performance beginning at 11 a.m. MJ’s Brass Boppers, the Willie Jones III Quintet and The Curtis Family C-notes will be accompanied by poets Enid Pickett and Kamau Daáood to honor this important holiday. Greg Bridges will MC.
The Father’s Day Evening Concert will conclude Healdsburg Jazz Festival this year. Paula West and
Like Dave Holland, Charlie Musselwhite laid down a new kind of sound with his instrument, the harmonica. A founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Musselwhite is widely considered the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd’s Elwood Blues in The Blues Brothers. Never one to rest on his laurels, in 2019 the mouth harpist’s composition with Ben Harper, “No Mercy in This Land,” was named Song of the Year at the 40th Blues Music Awards. The Charlie Musselwhite Band will perform on June 17 in the Jackson Theater. Terrie Odabi will open.
Bobi Céspedes celebrates over four decades of performing her distinctive Afro-Cuban music throughout the world. Like her esteemed peers, Céspedes innovated her genre, adding imaginative modern elements to folk and other traditional music. She also composes and is a highly regarded bandleader as well as a music educator. Bobi Céspedes will perform with the Arenas Dance Company on June 16 in the Raven Performing Arts Theater.
The 2022 Healdsburg Jazz headliners are joined by a spectrum of musical performers throughout the week. Opening night (June 13) will feature Bay area vocalist Tiffany Austin and her quintet in the Hotel Healdsburg’s Garden Courtyard for a Dinner and a Dessert Show. Jesús Diaz su Qba and his ensemble are sure to have people dancing to their Afro-Cuban rhythms during a free concert in historic Healdsburg Plaza on Tuesday evening.
The Adam Shulman Quartet featuring Ed Cherry will perform at the Truett Hurst Winery, a perfect way to cork a week of jazz in the wine country until next year.
The Healdsburg Jazz Festival may last seven days, but the nonprofit’s mission to “stimulate and promote awareness and appreciation of jazz by facilitating cross-cultural interaction” continues to nurture young and adult musicians throughout
the entire year. The numbers are staggering, one of many reasons Healdsburg Jazz is frequently cited among the premier small jazz festivals in America. Since the festival’s 1999 founding, 180,000 children have joined festival-sponsored free education programs. In 2021 alone, Healdsburg Jazz organized 36 events. Almost 50% of these programs were free. In 22 years, more than 56,000 people have attended Healdsburg Jazz Festival to experience amazing performances and contribute to this brilliant community success.
Always magical, Healdsburg will add indelible jazz notes to the air June 13-19. Internationally renowned performers Dave Holland, Charlie Musselwhite and Bobi Céspedes will be joined by regional and national musicians who are well on their ways to stardom. With so much talent playing this year, concerts are sure to sell out swiftly. Reserve your jazz adventure tickets soon at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival website.
If listening to live jazz in the middle of Sonoma County wine country sounds idyllic to you, you’re not alone. Aficionados and newbies alike have already blocked their calendars to attend the 24th Annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival from June 13 to 19. Founded in 1999, Healdsburg Jazz showcases more than 120 diverse musicians while supporting music education in the local schools.
Three jazz giants will headline this year’s event. NEA Jazz Master Dave Holland, bluesman Charlie Musselwhite and vocalist Bobi Céspedes will highlight the celebration of this distinctively American art form. In addition to these superstars, Healdsburg Jazz artistic director Marcus Shelby and his team have planned an impressive roster of Grammy winners, rising stars, innovators and improvisers for seven days.
Double bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Holland has performed live for more than fifty years. A member of the fabled Lost Quintet with Miles Davis and Chick Corea, among others, Holland established an avant-garde bass sound that changed the course of jazz bass. The National Endowment of the Arts recognized Holland as one of its five Master Fellows in 2017. Dave Holland Solo & Duo & Trio will perform on June 18 in the Jackson Theater. He'll be performing with fellow NEA Jazz Master pianist Kenny Barron, as well as Kevin Eubanks and Johnathan Blake.
