Among the first to see the potential for growing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay along the fog-shrouded Pacific Ocean, we have refined our understanding of our estate properties with each passing vintage. Sometimes referred to as the “far” Sonoma Coast, our rugged, windswept vineyards represent extreme viticulture in the pursuit of crafting wines representative of time and place. Working in agricultural isolation on the edge of the coast, just north of the town of Jenner, is done with a very specific goal in mind…to present a pure expression of one of the world’s truly exceptional places to make wine. Our organic and biodynamic practices emphasize our approach as stewards of the land, resulting in healthier vines and higher quality soils. Our commitment to stewardship along with our organic and biodynamic farming practices have been unwavering constants of our winemaking philosophy since our inception. Sitting just 2 miles from the Pacific, 43 acres of Sea View Ridge were planted almost entirely to Pinot Noir in 1998. Over the years, it has been our custom to make a single Pinot Noir that tells the story of Sea View Ridge, but this is a wild and diverse place. In fact, it is more like a mosaic, a collection of vineyard blocks, draped over rugged ridges along the ocean. Each of these blocks has different traits, giving rise to wines with distinctive characteristics.

Gorgeous aromatics open on our 2019 Sea View Ridge Pinot Noir, running an alluring gamut from damp forest floor, coastal botanicals, briny sea air, and crushed-rock minerality to deep red—almost purple—fruit. A seamless palate, from entry to finish, balances that vivid fruit with a savory umami quality, while silky tannins and fresh acidity merge in a structured finish brightened with a kick of orange zest.

THE VINEYARD THAT STARTED IT ALL.
First planted in 1991, Camp Meeting Ridge is our flagship estate vineyard and the source for Camp Meeting Ridge Chardonnay and Camp Meeting Ridge Pinot Noir. Situated a mere two miles from the ocean at nearly 1,500 feet, its fruit combines elements of chilly coastal weather and mountain character. Perched on a knoll above the fog line, its carefully contoured vine rows bask in sunshine throughout the growing season while the ambient temperatures remain cool. Working in agricultural isolation on the edge of the coast, just north of the town of Jenner, is done with a very specific goal in mind…to present a pure expression of one of the world’s truly exceptional places to make wine. The 2019 Chardonnay from our Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard walks a tightrope of intriguing contrasts and dichotomies - it’s remarkably fresh and vibrant but richly textured at the same time. Aromas of delicate citrus blossom and Meyer lemon zest open, joined by fresh pear and hints of white stone fruit layered with the site’s signature coastal brininess: a mineral-driven oyster-shell quality with resiny herbs and hints of anise that nudge the wine in an appealing savory direction. The wet-stone character persists and frames the palate, underlying an exotic preserved-lemon character accentuated by bright marine acidity carrying the wine through a long, textured finish.
2019 Chardonnay Tasting Notes:
Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard, just a stone’s throw from the Pacific Ocean in far-west Sonoma, was planted 30 years ago, in 1991. The mature vines are well acclimated to the cool site and are producing our most exciting and interesting Chardonnays to date. Given the extremes of the vineyard-intricate microclimates and diverse soils, each small block ripens at its own pace. We harvested the grapes by hand in individual picks in the early morning to ensure that the fruit was in the best possible condition and came in at a cool temperature, to be whole-cluster pressed by sunrise.
