It was 2022 and Jason and Carly Miller were in the ICU with their oldest daughter Elizabeth. At only six months old, Elizabeth had started to miss her developmental milestones. By ten months, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that greatly affects the nervous system, resulting in complications such as seizures. Elizabeth was now six years old but ever since the diagnosis, the Miller family had been through countless health scares and hospital stays as their daughter’s condition fluctuated. Now, they were facing a palliative care team ready to prepare Jason and Carly for the worst news any parent could ever receive. “They pulled us into a room with a bunch of social workers and doctors, basically telling us she wasn’t going to make it,” Jason recalls.
Faced with this shattering information, the couple were forced to take stock of their lives. Jason was working long stressful hours in construction, a job that was hard to maintain while trying to be there for his family. Carly has quit her job as a pharmacy technician to care for their two daughters, managing all of Elizabeth's comprehensive care needs, including her debilitating seizures.
For Jason, the choice was clear. He called up his boss and quit his job right then and there. “I needed to do more to take care of my daughter and we needed to be together as a family.” Later that day, they received the news that a miracle had taken place. After running one more round of tests, doctors had news that was nothing short of a miracle. Against all odds, Elizabeth had made a sharp turn around. She was going to make it after all. “Everyone was stunned and the doctor said I have no answer for how she is improving, but she is,” Carly said.
As an emerging franchise, Melty offered the Miller’s everything they were looking for in a business. Jason could put his construction and management skills to good use, having just earned a doctorate in Business Administration. Most importantly, Jason and Carly could run Melty and still devote their energy to raising their children and caring for Elizabeth’s special needs. “We were thinking about what we could do to give our family a little independence and set ourselves up on a path to success,” Carly says. The Millers loved that it was a new franchise, and the opportunity to get in on the ground floor had the potential to reap big rewards. “We could see their vision of where they wanted to go,” says Carly.
Jason and Carly flew to Utah to meet with the Melty managers, bringing along a very important critic – their four year old daughter. “They had little bites of the sandwiches on a table in front of us,” Jason describes. “And I looked across at the guy and said, our daughter is going to taste everything and if she gives us the thumbs up, then we’re in.” It didn’t take long to get a very big thumbs up.

Melty sandwiches offered a lifeline for one Sacramento couple. This is their story.

Since then, the Miller family hasn’t looked back, opening a Melty in Sacramento, the first California location. It’s this spirit of unwavering perseverance and determination that has continued to lift them up, no matter what challenges lay ahead. Both Carly and Jason grew up in broken homes, and have had to fight to get where they are today, facing tremendous obstacles along the way. Even after getting wounded as a soldier in Iraq, Jason never lost faith. “I went through two years of rehab where doctors told me that I was going to be laying in bed taking pills for the rest of my life.” For Jason, this kind of life wasn’t an option. “I fought through that. I got up and started walking, then playing basketball.” He received a purple heart for his service in the Iraq war.

-Carly Miller
It was in these dark days that the Miller family made a bold and decisive move. They sold their house and got to work figuring out what they should do next. They needed a business that they could run while supporting their family. A business that was built on a quality product with strong ties to the community. They needed Melty.
A premium fast-casual experience, Melty is based around the universal truth that yummy, gooey, delicious, melty cheese should be the foundation for any sandwich. Jason was instantly drawn to the concept, remembering how he used to spend some of the best times of his childhood in the kitchen cooking with his grandmother. “I thought, maybe a little restaurant could be an homage to her,” Jason says.
