From the beginning, the history of Oregon’s premier wine region has been shaped by its geographic, geological, and agricultural promise. In the 19th century, the Willamette Valley’s lush forests, sprawling meadows, and mild climate made it a popular destination for weary travelers making their way west on the Oregon Trail. Today, the promised land of milk, honey, and opportunity is known not only for its crop, but alsor its wine. From the first Willamette Valley vineyard planting in 1966 by the Lett family, vintners have drawn inspiration from the same things that brought the original Oregon Trail homesteaders to the fertile valley. And though the relatively young region faced an uphill battle to compete with longer-established AVAs from Europe and beyond, the Willamette Valley wine landscape blossomed as Lett, known as “Papa Pinot,” and other pioneers like Erath Vineyards and Sokol Blosser, found success with pinot noir grapes. Yet it wasn’t until 1979, when a local pinot noir placed third in a blind tasting at the Olympics of Wine in Paris, that the Willamette Valley garnered recognition on the international stage. Since then, the valley—specifically, the Dundee Hills AVA—has flourished on the strength of internationally award-winning wines and an industry rooted in local community. With family-owned wineries, farm-to-table restaurants, and quaint bed and breakfasts, Dundee Hills attracts everyone from sommeliers to first-time tasters, and has something for every palate across its 1,300 acres of vineyards. « Read Less

Oregon’s premier wine region is a natural result of its geography, geology, and fertility. In the 1800s, the Willamette Valley’s rivers, hills, and forests became a popular end point for weary travelers making their way west on the Oregon Trail. Some of those pioneers settled in the Dundee Hills area, which today is the home of the Dundee Hills AVA, 6,940 acres in total, with 1,300 acres planted with grapes. The many restaurants, wineries, and lodgings provide a unique experience for visitors of all ages and experience.
