CASA of the River Region is committed to providing court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused, neglected, and dependent children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes. CASA recruits and trains everyday citizens to be friends, mentors and advocates for children with active cases in Family Courts of Jefferson, Bullitt, Shelby, Spencer, Henry, Oldham, and Trimble Counties. 1.23 in 100 Kentucky children experience abuse and neglect, a rate that is 60% higher than the national average. Your support of CASA can make a positive impact in the lives of children.
While kids are involved in court, due to no fault of their own, CASA volunteers serve as “eyes and ears”, sworn in and appointed by judges to gather insights from the child, teachers, counselors, foster parents, social workers, and more. CASAs take on just one case at a time so they can get to know children as individuals, their wishes, their needs, and advocate for their best interests in and out of court. CASAs report facts and make recommendations that help children move forward from trauma they have endured to find brighter days.
Brenda Hackett, an active CASA since 2020, is fueled by her desire to help and protect children. “Though challenging, this role is also very fulfilling. I am curious about what motivates each child and try to approach each child as an individual. I can establish good rapport with children and teens to provide support and encouragement,” she said of her experience after advocating for six children across three different cases.
By volunteering with CASA, you can use your voice to change a child’s story. CASA volunteers come from diverse personal and professional backgrounds and receive specialized training to prepare them to be effective advocates for children. Each volunteer receives ongoing support and training. We are in this together to make life better for kids! About Us
Since 1984, CASA of the River Region has trained and paired volunteers to be the voice for abused and neglected children in Family Court. CASA serves children in Jefferson, Bullitt, Henry, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, and Trimble counties.
There are over 2,000 children in Family Court annually in CASA’s seven-county service area. We believe children need at least one caring, consistent adult to look out for their safety and nurture their self-worth. CASA is here to ensure vulnerable children’s voices are heard.

Neglect comes in many forms. Educational neglect is an issue that can have an impact on a child’s development and future. CASA volunteer Jimmy Stout was tasked with helping a seventh-grade boy who had fallen behind in his studies due to attendance issues. The boy had fallen so far behind that he was faced with the possibility of failing the grade level for the second time, a fate that Stout refused to accept. Instead, Stout worked with school administrators to arrange a Course Recovery Program that would change his path, charting a course for a brighter future, an outcome this young man came to see with a little extra support from his CASA.

“Not only did he complete the fifty hours of course recovery work, he improved his grades so drastically in the fourth grading period that he was able to be promoted to the eighth grade without attending summer school! And on numerous occasions, this young man told me how happy he was to be back in school and making new friends.”
Jimmy Stout, CASA volunteer, recalled of his rewarding experience
Peter Tower, CASA volunteer, has high praise for the community & CASA team
“They are professional, passionate about helping kids, and know how to be joyous. Everyone involved has a positive attitude and a growth mindset. I always walk away with increased motivation and a new skill or better perspective on how to help our kids.”
