There are a select few villages in America where you can’t help but sigh as you step from your car onto the town square. These locales invite us to relax, to forget the hectic pace of our work and daily lives, to appreciate what lays directly before us, be it a shop window filled with artisan crafts or a perfectly prepared meal inside a beautifully appointed independent restaurant. The good life envelops us and we can’t help but share in its embrace. The Healdsburg Plaza is one such destination, a classic 19th-century design accented with boutiques, exceptional dining, and award-winning winery tasting rooms. A walk along this plaza square becomes less about getting from Point A to Point B and much more about the stroll itself into Sonoma's calming ambiance.
Hotel Healdsburg resides on the western corner of the town plaza, a boutique property from which we can easily embark to 19 wine tasting rooms, more than 25 restaurants and over three score shops and galleries. Like each of these destinations, every element of Hotel Healdsburg has been carefully curated. Local artist Wade Hoefer was commissioned to paint unique canvases of his signature landscapes and skylines for each room as well as in the grand lobby. The ceramics from Richmond artist Jared Nelson are hand-thrown California clay. San Francisco’s Brit Epperson and Barret Karber designed and crafted the guest room furnishings using salvaged native bay laurel trees. We come to expect these bespoke details when visiting winemakers and artisan studios, the joy we feel when surrounded by such accents in our accommodations remains just as palpable.
Refined amenities spill onto the plaza just steps from Hotel Healdsburg, many serving more than one aesthetic function for those who visit. La Crema invites us to taste their spectrum of excellent vintages but leaves room for browsing wine-related gifts that will remind us of our weekend getaway while serving a functional role in our kitchens and upon our terraces. Stonestreet Estate Vineyards displays a topo map in its tasting room that proscribes the diverse terroirs that helped establish this region’s viticulture prestige.

The Oakville Grocery Co. offers numerous goods for the day's wine tasting or outdoor recreation junket. The curated charcuterie, custom constructed sandwiches, and ready-made food items provide every morsel you could desire before embarking on your walk through the Armstrong Redwoods, around Lake Sonoma or along the Foothill Park trails. Speaking of food, you can supplement your wine tasting and dining with a cooking class at Relish Culinary Adventures, a luscious way to fill an afternoon. Autumn and winter offer ideal times to partake in the popular mushroom foraging class.
The plaza boutiques are equally enticing. Gallery Lulo showcases local jewelry makers as well as rotating exhibitions from renowned regional and national artists. Levin & Company speaks to the easy pace of the Healdsburg escape, an actual independent bookstore with all the trappings, from staff recommendation to an unhurried environment that encourages browsing. Many national authors make a point of reading new works at this 25-year plaza institution. You can also find handcrafted shoes within Rainsong Shoes, local artists inside Erickson Fine Art and Stafford Galleries and plenty of fashion-forward designs at Les Lunes, OSKA and Bella, among others.
One beautiful way to visit Healdsburg is to park, check in to Hotel Healdsburg, toss your keys away and spend a couple of gloriously car-free days visiting the bountiful tasting rooms that stand within easy walking distance of your room. Thumbprint Cellars, Williamson Wines and C Donatiello Winery all sit within two blocks of your hotel, with more than two dozen other tasting rooms but a few more steps away. Should you wish to travel beyond the plaza, simply borrow a complimentary chartreuse 8-speed PUBLIC bike from the hotel.
Harmon Guest House adds a unique boutique hotel in homage to town founder Harmon Heald. The modern LEED-certified lodging showcases reclaimed regional resources, like the lobby sculpture crafted from San Francisco Victorians to the check-in desk carved from a fallen eucalyptus tree. Home to the best rooftop bar in Sonoma County, all 39 rooms continue the theme with personal balconies or patios. The Harmon king rooms convey a studio ambiance, the double queens are ideal for a girlfriend or guy Sonoma getaway and the Founder’s Suites come with separate living room and dining room. Harmon Guest House takes design to another cultural level as well, the “Elevated Talks” series features rooftop seminars with leading innovators from across America.
The LEED-certified h2hotel also offers an interesting option for those seeking a chic, creekside space to hang out and lay one’s head. From the contemporary cuisine prepared in the spoonbar kitchen, with layful starters, handmade pastas, and market-driven mains, to the breathy, lounge-lovers’ lobby and amenities like bike storage or Public Bike borrowing, guests here revel in the urbane touches far from the madding city crowds. The eco-rooms are just as chill, sustainably built for comfort with leather pull door handles, webbed chairs and the coolest “headboards” you’ll find this side of Stockholm. The eco-king, eco-studio and eco-suites all include separate sitting areas, the latter also accommodates small families or a couple friends with a balcony that offers an unobstructed Fitch Mountain vista.
The Hotel Healdsburg, Harmon Guest House, and h2hotel concierges are happy to arrange private tastings and tours should you choose to travel farther afield, adding expert touring advice in Dry Creek, Alexander, Russian River, and Green Valleys as well as on Chalk Hill. From hard to get dinner reservations in and out of town to recommendations for family fun and outdoor adventure, the concierges will make all arrangements at a moment's notice.
Not that you need to move at all if you don’t desire to do so. The Spa Healdsburg Hotel features an ever-changing assortment of treatments to match the seasons. Red, Red Wine Massage celebrates the harvest with a custom wine-infused body cream that provides deep hydration and relaxation. The Harvest Body Polish also reflects autumn, a 100-minute treatment that invigorates your skin and concludes with a glass of red wine. Spa Healdsburg Hotel takes great pride in its Farm to Spa ethos, utilizing Meyer lemons for massage and herbal wraps, incorporating locally produced wine and honey into a wrap and working lavender and peppermint deep into a restorative massage.
The courtyard and Garden Pool entice you to relax more deeply still, the latter a 60-foot pool with Jacuzzi set among olive and fig trees, hydrangea and rose bushes. The Mediterranean-style space encourages the hours slowly drift away. The Fireplace Lounge awaits just inside the courtyard garden, a richly textured area to warm up against the chilly night or gather with friends and family at a wedding or other event weekend. Come morning, the Fireplace Lounge also plays host to the complimentary breakfast, featuring fresh pastries, fruits and additional staples to start the day.
The Spirit Bar also provides a wonderful gathering place, a lobby lounge that offers small bites to share, great cocktails and local ales. The room fills Fridays and Saturdays when local bands play live jazz. Charlie Palmer’s Dry Creek Kitchen celebrates local provender in a modern American cuisine context, set in a lovely dining room with a robust wine list that spans the region with more than 500 diverse selections. The evening menu may present Beef Tartare or Espelette Gulf Shrimp starters followed by a main course of Lentil Crusted Ora King Salmon, among other sumptuous choices set upon an elegant table setting surrounded by Sonoma’s famously relaxed atmosphere. Pizzando adds a casual air to dinner and lunch, an open restaurant with a wood-fired oven that produces a variety of delectable options. In-room service from either restaurant is available during open hours as well.
The village of Healdsburg was established over 150 years ago in 1857. Located in central Sonoma County, the town thrived as a waystation and commercial locale for provisions and sundries. The same could be said today, when well-curated goods, artwork, and wine tasting rooms allow visitors to supplement their own lives with elements that conjure up beauty, nourishment and sustenance. Hotel Healdsburg honors these relationships, from guestroom ambiance set in naturally salvaged wood and neutral tones to a courtyard designed for familial gatherings. Visit the Hotel Healdsburg website to put your village getaway together.
