The Gold Standard
For centuries, cultures worldwide have prized gold for its beauty, durability, malleability, and its monetary value. At Kinross, a Toronto-based senior gold mining company with mines and projects in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Chile, and Mauritania, we understand the tremendous importance of this precious mineral. Through more than three decades of operating globally, we’ve come to appreciate a much more important resource in mining — our people.
Through responsible mining, Kinross works to ensure that the impact of its work extends far beyond the mere market price of a commodity. It’s about environmental and economic sustainability, ensuring that the land and communities we operate in are healthier and more prosperous. We minimize impact of operations to work in harmony with nature while ensuring job creation and upward mobility for our employees and their neighbors. We also engage with our communities to maintain a high quality of life that extends beyond the life of the mine.
The community, from investors to employees to other stakeholders, is worth more than gold.

Modern miners have taken a scientific and sustainable approach to age-old pursuit of gold
At Kinross, sustainability means responsibility. We are accountable to the planet and the environment surrounding our sites, being conscientious stewards of the land and minimizing our footprint on the natural splendor that gives us all so much. Kinross is also responsible to our host communities, prioritizing the health, safety, and comfort of our neighbors. We create sustainable economic and social value through job creation, tax payments, and donations. We are thoughtful in creating and maintain an overall quality of life for everyone that is sustainable even beyond the life of the mine.
Sustainability
Corporate responsibility is at the core of our business strategy. We adhere to the highest standards of governance, ethics, safety, and honesty, with the goal of effectively managing any environmental or social risks of our mining activities. Kinross doesn’t just want to leave each site and community as we found it — we want to leave it better.
workforce development
More precious than the mineral we mine are the more than 6,000 people who make Kinross. We want to protect our employees by ensuring the safest and healthiest work environment; we also want to enrich their lives, providing a meaningful and rewarding livelihood to the individual and their family. This means more than just fair and competitive compensation and benefits.
Our people are the best at what they do, and their desire to get better inspires everyone. Kinross makes room for personal growth through easy access to a broad range of training and development programs to refine and expand their talents. They also have direct access to leadership programs that instill best practices while building skills, technical knowledge, and professional acumen. This promotes employee engagement and productivity. More importantly, it gives each employee upward mobility and a chance to feel professionally and personally fulfilled.
economic impact
Like any business, Kinross works to generate value for its investors and its employees. The company also understands that economic impact is much larger. We consider the broader “Benefit Footprint,” a metric that tracks the distribution of direct economic impact that our operations have on our host communities. This includes job creation through local employment and providing meaningful livelihoods for employees and their families — about 99% of our total workforce and 92% of management live within our host communities. We often buy from from those neighbors we don’t employ, procuring a host of materials and services from local merchants and business owners to support our mining activities, and, of course, we pay local taxes.
More than that, we engage with our host communities, working with local governments, community organizations, civic institutions, and individuals to find a way to give back to our hosts through donation and activity, as well as lay down a plan to ensure long-term prosperity that extends long after the mine has closed.
community impact
At Kinross, we also know that impact extends beyond mere dollars and cents. We strive to build lasting relationships with our host communities and countries, creating social and economic benefits that improve the overall quality of everyone’s lives.

"I would say that I stumbled out to Kinross Round Mountain. I have now been here 16 years. I started working out here when I was 19. I am now a Shift Supervisor for the mine department. I am also a volunteer in the town. I coach multiple youth and High School sports, mainly wrestling.
The coolest thing about working in a gold mine is how big all our machines are, and the amount of material we can move in a day.
For anyone interested in working in a gold mine, I would recommend being punctual with attendance and bring a positive frame of mind."

These connections begin with stakeholder engagement, laying down a foundation of sincerity, reliability, clarity, and face-to-face contact. We want to know and understand everyone’s point of view, the needs and concerns of every group and individual, while being honest and transparent about our operations. Where applicable, we also aim to strengthen Indigenous communities in and around our host communities, making sure they are included in the benefits of mining development. From this base of trust, we continue an open dialogue to ensure all communities have a formal voice in the ongoing conversation.
Kinross also understands its responsibility to the long-term wellbeing of its host communities. Beyond our recognized environmental reclamation program, we also look to socio-economic sustainability. We want to build a positive legacy for both the land and the people of our communities.

Fort Knox, Alaska
An open-pit mine near Fairbanks, Fort Knox is one of the few cold-weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2023, the site poured its nine-millionth ounce of gold.
Bald Mountain, Nevada
The largest private mining land package in the U.S., Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with approximately 3.7 million gold ounces of estimated measured and indicated gold resources.
Round Mountain, Nevada
Nevada is one of the top mining jurisdictions in the world. Kinross has operated Round Mountain since 2003, and the company continues to advance initiatives to extend the mine’s life.
Washington
In September 2020, Kinross acquired 70% of the Manh Choh project (formerly the Peak project) in Alaska, located approximately 400 kilometres southeast of Fort Knox. The project poured its first gold bar on July 8, 2024.

Rusty O'Dell
"I learned about Kinross Round Mountain through a family friend on the early 2000’s.
I’m a high school graduate with some college experience in the criminal justice field, how does this apply I would say mostly in the investigation side of the site work here in the mining industry.
I have been with Kinross Gold Corporation for the better part of 20 years now, in varies positions, Equipment operator, Lead roles, Mine Operation Supervisor, Continuous Improvement, Fixed Maintenance General Supervisor, Mobile Maintenance General Supervisor, Mine Operation Superintendent, Mill/Ore Processing Superintendent.
The best part of working for Kinross Gold Corporation for me is the people, and the seeing how persons for all kinds of backgrounds, disciplines, and global regions can come together and form a world class team.
I would say one of the coolest things about working at a gold mine is, how the process works form start to finish. The mining process to the ore process and refining process it takes to produce a gold bar.
I would tell a person if you’re looking for a career that is challenging but gives you room to grow, be creative and feel accomplished Kinross is a good fit.
I would share what gold mining has done for me personally, how it provides quality of life, and how it gives opportunities that are unique that you just don’t find everyday with other industries."

"I have my Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Geological), from the University of Saskatchewan. Within my studies, I was able to focus my upper-year electives on Mining Engineering related coursework (Rock Mechanics, Ventilation, OP and UG Mine Design, etc.), which has provided me the opportunity to have a very fruitful career thus far in Mining!
I started as an Intern out of the Toronto Office the summer of 2020. In 2021, after graduation I joined the Processing Team as a Metallurgist and in January of 2023 I transitioned to a role in Geotechnical Engineering. Since I have been in Geotechnical Engineering, I rose to a Senior Engineer in Feb. 2024, and am current Acting Chief Geotechnical Engineer for the Round Mountain team.
When I tell people I work in the mining industry (let alone gold), I am met with a variety of responses that largely translate to “We still mine?!” “Do you still use a pickaxe?!”. I love getting into these conversations about modern day, sustainable mining, and the value that mining still brings to the economy. Sharing our best practices and how fruitful a career in mining can be is something that I really enjoy. From a technical standpoint, I love coming to work everyday as each day is different, dynamic, and unique. I can be a creative problem solver and feel as if, first and foremost I am keeping people safe, and making an impact (that translates into a beautiful gold bar!)."
