For students with
learning disabilities, it is imperative they receive educational models and environments that are flexible and adaptable to their individual needs.
For students with learning disabilities, it is imperative they have access to educational models and environments that are flexible and adaptable to their individual needs. Since 1981, educators at Winston Preparatory School have been dedicated to providing a myriad of research-based educational programming for students at their network of campuses throughout the United States. This includes three engaging and flexible program options at their online campus, Winston Online, which currently serves students in grades three through twelve. In addition, Winston Online now offers educational support for college students who would benefit from their expertise, support, and fully personalized approach.
Winston Online’s live full-time program mimics a full day at Winston Prep’s in-person learning. Programs are accessible from anywhere in the country, and admissions are on a rolling basis. Through Winston Prep's thoughtful enrollment process, educators take the time to get to know and understand every student holistically. A student’s distinct learning profile is used as a guide to place them in the appropriate group based on skill level rather than strictly by grade.
The program includes the daily Focus class, a cornerstone of Winston Prep’s model, which is a one-on-one instruction class period dedicated to intensively addressing a student’s greatest areas of need. Every child’s Focus teacher communicates regularly with parents to keep them fully informed and involved in their child’s progress. This program reflects the game-changing ethos of Winston Preparatory’s methodology, including the Qualities of a Sustainable and Independent Learner scale (QSIL) and the Continuous Feedback System, a method designed to gain the deepest level of understanding about each student by informing teachers of needed adjustments in the students’ program.
The Focus Only option is also now available to college students seeking to hone their skills in areas such as writing, math, self-advocacy, organization, and planning.
With virtual programs expanding quickly, and the face of education undeniably changing, Winston Preparatory School is providing students with learning disabilities all over the country access to their educational mission. Offering the most comprehensive and flexible education available, Winston Online is devoted to facilitating a bright future for every child.
As part of their holistic model to serve children with learning differences of all ages, Winston Online builds all their virtual courses to best support individualized learning. This includes getting to know each student to identify their individual learning profile and developing coursework that suits their needs with the goal of promoting independence, responsibility, and self-awareness.
Virtual learning is not tethered to any state testing requirements, so educators are free to develop the most comprehensive and personalized curriculum and learning environment for their classrooms.
In addition to their Focus class, students take five content classes including math, literature, language skills, history, and science as well as two electives. To specifically serve each student, Winton Online has exceptionally small class sizes. This past school year, the largest class was 4:1. It is important to note that Winston Online courses are synchronous and classes provide an even more personalized approach, ensuring each student receives the attention they need to flourish.

Community Project and Service days are also embedded into monthly schedules and provide opportunities for students to connect through stimulating community-based games, virtual field trips, and various virtual community service projects. Depending on where students are located, some in-person extracurricular community services are also available.
In the second program option, Core Program students receive the integral daily Focus class along with two to three content classes of their choice. The Core Program may be the perfect supplement for older students with learning disabilities who need a few additional classes to receive their high school diploma. Younger students may also benefit, as the program can support a full-time home-school workload.
Winston Online offers the Focus Only Program for students looking to zero in on their most crucial learning areas. Consisting of just the daily Focus class, these 45-minute sessions are available three to five times per week. Focus Only is available to complement any educational programming already in place for a child.
Socialization opportunities are intentionally built into the robust programming based on each student’s interest, which can help foster the most effective atmosphere for success. Students are motivated to form strong bonds with their fellow classmates and teachers through small breakout groups during classes, and scheduled social group meetings. These can include collaborating on academic and social projects and finding solutions to team challenges. Relationship building is also encouraged within the after-school student-led clubs, such as cooking, Minecraft, and photography. Wellness Wednesdays are held once a month and include yoga and mindfulness meditation for the entire school.
