Patrolling since then, the MassDOT Highway Assistance Program is never far away, with a fleet of 57 vehicles monitoring the most trafficked roadways in the Commonwealth. From fixing a flat tire, supplying gas for an empty tank, fixing minor mechanical problems to providing crucial support after an accident, the MassDOT Highway Assistance Patrols are equipped and ready to handle a range of roadway mishaps so that you can get on with your day. Remarkably, this assistance is free of charge and available to anyone on the covered highways, regardless of where they live or whether they have insurance.
When Maria was traveling on 495 South in Littleton, she found herself hit by a rotor from a tractor trailer. After the wheel came off and pieces of the metal got embedded into her tire, a MassDOT Assistance patrol vehicle driven by Fernando guided her to safety. “Truck 5216 came up on my vehicle and changed the tire for me for free. I'm very thankful to Fernando. You did a great job. He was very friendly and got me off that dangerous highway quickly,” she said.
In an age when our journeys are increasingly defined by uncertainty, the peace of mind that comes with roadside assistance is indispensable. For the past twenty years, drivers in Massachusetts have depended on the comprehensive MassDOT Highway Assistance Program sponsored by MAPFRE Insurance to keep many major roadways and interstates in the Bay State safe. The Massachusetts DOT Motorist Assistance Program “MAP” as it was originally called, first began in 1995 to assist stranded motorists on selected freeway routes during the morning and evening peak travel times. In 2002, a Massachusetts-based transportation marketing agency, Travelers Marketing, under contract for MassDOT developed a program to allow a private-sector company to sponsor MAP. Travelers Marketing secured the first-of-its-kind sponsor, The Commerce Insurance Company (now MAPFRE Insurance), launching it with the original “Cares Van” program name in August 2003.

Over the past 20 years, MassDOT Highway Assistance Program drivers like Fernando have patrolled 28 million miles of roadway. This remarkable milestone anniversary marks a total of 702,000 incidents in which the MassDOT Program has provided invaluable assistance to drivers in need. Since the program began, 70 informational MAPFRE highway signs have been prominently displayed to inform drivers of the covered routes. The MassDOT Highway Assistance Program sponsorship program model has expanded to over 20 states from Maine to Hawaii.
“We were in a very stressful situation with a blowout on our travel trailer,” said a driver who encountered MassDOT Patrol driver Dan. “His expertise and calming manner were much appreciated including assisting us back into traffic. Thank you!”
This dedication to serving Massachusetts drivers over the past two decades has been made possible in part by MAPFRE Insurance. As the sole sponsor of the MassDOT Program for over 20 years, MAPFRE exhibits its staunch commitment to keeping the roads safe, not just for their customers, but for anyone who finds themselves driving a vehicle in the state of Massachusetts. For MAPFRE Insurance, partnering with MassDOT meant aligning with a shared vision of protecting the entire community free of charge.
As MAPFRE insures more autos and homes in Massachusetts than any other carrier in the country, it is a top priority to keep the roadways running smoothly and safely for everyone. This is especially important as the number of cars on the road continues to multiply. Over the past fifty years 128 million drivers have been added to our highways. And the numbers just keep climbing. This year, there are a projected 243.4 million licensed drivers on the road, up from 238.6 million in the previous year. Additionally, miles traveled in the U.S. have vastly increased, with motorists driving 277.4 billion miles in March of 2022, an increase of 7.9 billion miles from March of 2021. Thankfully, MAPFRE’s efforts are up to the task. Last year alone, MassDOT patrolled over 1.3 million miles of roadway, clearing 40,693 incidents. MAPFRE Insurance’s purpose is to support the safety of the communities where we live and work while developing a more sustainable and more cohesive society and the MassDOT Highway Assistance Program aligns perfectly with those values.
Patrick with the MassDOT Program assisted a motorist trying to change a spare tire on the side of the road. “I had already changed my spare tire onto the car when Pat found me. Pat checked the spare. It had less than 10 psi! Pat aired it up so I could get going safely. Thanks, MAPFRE.”

Patrick was also involved in helping a motorist when their tank of gas ran out. “Patrick gave me some gasoline. When the car wouldn’t start, he knew enough to have me put the car in park. It was still in drive from when I ran out of gas. Thank you for sending an experienced professional to help me.”
For countless motorists across the state, the MassDOT Highway Assistance Program has provided a vital lifeline. With support from MAPFRE Insurance, MassDOT will continue to put you and your family’s safety first so that you can get back to focusing on what really matters.
