The Panama Hotel, located in the historic Gerstle Park neighborhood of San Rafael, is one of those rare vintage buildings that successfully blends kitsch with elegance.
A two-story wooden Victorian, originally built in 1910, the building was purchased by Maria and Joe Gargiulo in 1926 who soon opened their home and kitchen to road weary travelers. By 1937, their table had become so popular that the couple added a stuccoed addition which is still the Panama Hotel’s dining room. Maria’s Pueblo, as it was then called, became the first of Marin’s many Mexican eateries.
To this day, a visit to the Panama Hotel is sure to amuse with its uniquely themed guest rooms such as Grant’s Tome or the Bordello Room. Be sure to check out some of the bejeweled balconies after enjoying a Sunday Brunch in the Atrium.
The delicious homemade continental breakfast of the Panama Hotel will not be the only fond memory you will bring home from your Marin vacation. Oh, and did we mention that your four-legged friend is invited to stay as well?

At the end of the civil war, a dairy farmer named Jefferson Thompson started making fresh cheese and shipped it via schooner to the port of San Francisco. His European-style cheeses, especially his famed Breakfast Cheese, soon gained popularity with the dockworkers because they were a delicious remedy for the shortage of protein during that time. The Marin French Cheese Company has operated in the same pristine valley in Marin since 1865, giving it the distinction of “longest continually operating cheese company in America”.
Stop by to pick up everything you need for an enjoyable and memorable picnic by the pond immediately outside the store.

In the mid-1960s, Jack Mason retired to his lifelong summer residence of Inverness in West Marin and began to document the history of the area. Eventually he created a wide-ranging and fascinating exhibit in the parlor of his historic home, The Gables. Upon his passing, money was raised for the purchase and rehabilitation of the house dating back to 1893. The Inverness Library and the Jack Mason Museum with his vast collection of West-Mariniana opened its doors to the public in 1986 and has been a popular destination for visitors ever since. Call in advance for open hours of operation.
