You’ve worked hard to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree in your chosen field. However, you may find yourself stuck in neutral if your institution lacks an adequate career counseling center. Fortunately, the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement has set a new standard of support for its students and alumni.
“The Mays Center provides services to help students develop into career-ready and community-minded individuals,” says Adriana Contreras, executive director of the Mays Center. “The success and unique presence of the Mays Center supports post-college outcomes through the offices of Experiential Learning, Community Engagement and Career Services. The Center also helps the university achieve its mission of empowering students with the knowledge and marketable skills that prepare them for rewarding careers, responsible global citizenship and lifelong learning.”
In addition to current students, the Mays Center serves faculty, staff and alumni. Faculty utilize Mays to work with students to establish academic internships, on-campus employment opportunities and experiential and service-learning courses that "provide academic pathways and transformative experiential learning and research engagement opportunities that contribute to career readiness and high academic achievement," according to the university's vision for 2040.
The Mays Center’s vast number of academic and career resources range from initial vocational exploration to Model UN, the “opportunity for students to analyze real-world scenarios critically.” Students also draw on daily resources like The General’s Store, a low-cost food supplier to supplement a student's nutritional needs. The Career Clothes Closet also provides business-ready apparel for students who may not have adequate financial means.

“The Mays Center is the go-to place on campus where students can have their resume reviewed, receive assistance with internships and/or a job search and select professional attire from the career closet,” Ms. Contreras says. “It is also the go-to location to sign up for volunteer opportunities, register to vote or visit the food pantry.”
The sense of community resonates throughout the Mays Center. Students utilize peer-to-peer tutoring and receive financial literacy training as well as one-on-one money coaching in addition to other critical life skills. In short, the Mays Center faculty and staff work tirelessly to prepare all students for the rigors and responsibilities of post-graduate life.
Mays Center students also participate in the innovative SA Ready to Work, a publicly funded education and job placement program.
“San Antonians overwhelmingly approved Ready to Work in 2020,” says Ms. Contreras. “The program is funded by a 1/8-cent sales tax and takes a customized approach to provide training and education opportunities for participants. Local employers have pledged support for the program and provide guidance relating to in-demand, well-paid occupations and relevant training.”
Like the area’s employers, Texas A&M University-San Antonio alumni are encouraged to take an active role at the Mays Center. Jaguar graduates are also welcome to use the Mays Center for career change opportunities and other assistance.
“All the Mays Center services are free to alumni,” says Director of Alumni Engagement Mary Kay Cooper. “This includes virtual and in-person job fairs, private, non-profit and government employment. They may come in to take headshots for LinkedIn, conduct mock interviews and collaborate with career services. We also create alumni panels about job opportunities in trending and established fields like cybersecurity.”

Ms. Cooper encourages all alumni to utilize the Mays Center often. “I believe when they cross the stage that is the beginning of their relationship with the university. As a job seeker, you want to build a network that doesn’t rely exclusively on your own resourcefulness. Alumni connections, like on our Facebook group, can range from benign to significant. Someone may ask how to get a transcript or have other questions a peer can answer quickly.”
Ms. Cooper has seen the Jaguar Alumni Network grow significantly in the past few years. Starting from scratch in 2016, today the Texas A&M-San Antonio Alumni Network has grown to 15,000 participants.
“Our social events like the Riverwalk and Ring Ceremony Brunch have really taken off,” she says. “We’re not a dues-based organization; all you have to do is graduate.”
Like alumni, current students will find plenty of assistance as they face graduation and future careers. Ms Contreras encourages undergraduates and graduate students alike to take advantage of resume-building, internship information and volunteer opportunities for personal enrichment. They can also learn about and apply for scholarships, grants and other tuition assistance programs. And, as Ms. Cooper notes, job fairs in specific majors like accounting and health fields are scheduled regularly.

“The Mays Center is a hub where service, academic and professional opportunities intersect with the goal of developing students, particularly students from underrepresented backgrounds,” Ms. Contreras explains. “The Center adds new programs annually to inspire and encourage professional and personal development, including the Next Steps Career Event and sponsorship opportunities for nonprofit partners. Since 2016, the Mays Center has prepared graduates for the competitive global marketplace by encouraging and offering discipline-specific experiences.”
The Mays Center has further established Texas A&M University-San Antonio as a career-focused university. Today, students, alumni and local employers can utilize the facilities to assist present and past Jaguars in achieving their career aspirations.
