On a typical day, whether you’re busy working from home, getting your kids online, entertaining friends and family, or just trying to enjoy some quiet time, you probably aren’t thinking about the energy you’re consuming. But the truth is that you can conserve significant amounts of energy—and save money—without giving power much more of your precious time and mental bandwidth. Installing a smart thermostat. Trading in your car for an EV. Swapping out that old fridge for one that’s Energy Star certified. Every small energy choice you make has an exponential effect on your home—and your planet. At National Grid, we call it the You Effect.
Here’s a list of five ways YOU can conserve energy, improve your household’s energy costs, and in the process, make the world a better place:
National Grid makes savings easier.
lighting
Limit reliance on artificial light by opening the blinds and curtains and letting the sunshine in during the day. Also, be sure to turn off lights, along with TVs, computers, and other appliances, when you’re not using them.
Turn Out the Lights
Don’t leave chargers plugged in if they’re not currently connected to your devices or if your device is already fully charged. Smart power strips can also help you control the amount of energy your electronics use.

Switch
Did you know there’s a switch on the side of your fan that will reverse the spin of the blades? In the summer, it should run counterclockwise to lift warm air. When it’s chilly, switch to clockwise and push hot air down into your home.
Flip the Switch
temperature
Be sure to monitor your thermostat to ensure that the settings change with the weather and with the hours you’re home and when you’re away. We suggest adjusting to 68 degrees for winter and 78 degrees for summer.
Check the Temp
Seasonal
Keep doors and windows closed while running your air conditioner. Use a fan to efficiently distribute cool air from the AC to other rooms in the house.
