A Unique Approach to Education

Until recently, Jill Wright was a retired principal with over 30 years of experience in education. After being approached to take the reins of Premier’s campus inside the original Gallery Furniture – with the cause fully supported by Houston’s beloved public figure Mattress Mack – she found herself falling in love with the concept of giving students an education they might not find anywhere else.

“At my previous alternative school, there was a student from the juvenile justice system who worked really hard to graduate, and we were so proud of him,” Wright recalls. “Then I saw him pushing carts at a grocery store and realized the diploma was about all he was left with. It’s critical for our kids to have a skill, a certification, and eventually, a job.” One of many details that sets Premier High School apart is the environment. As Premier heads into its fourth year, with its first year being during the COVID pandemic, they have managed to fine-tune their program from good to great. Every student at this high school, whether in grade 9 or 12, is more than just a number – they are recognized by their name, face, and personality. “My teachers care,” says Wright. “It’s all about student relationships here and providing a safe environment for them, a place where they feel comfortable coming and know that we have their back.” Believing there needs to be more to every student’s journey than just academic achievements, Premier places a strong emphasis on teaching students essential soft skills required in the workforce. Lunch seminars focus on job skills, mock interviews, resume writing, conflict resolution, and personal financing, helping students gain the confidence to become well-rounded individuals prepared for life beyond graduation. Premier High School welcomes students up to the age of 26, with many students in their adult program as well. Their recent designation as a P-Tech school has allowed them to foster partnerships with Houston Community College and other organizations to provide crucial internships and special work opportunities. The faculty also offers one-on-one assistance and small group support, even going so far as to ensure that every student has access to resources ranging from clothes to mental health services.
