The Lake Champlain Region is full of beautiful walks through hamlets and forests, with many under a mile and ideal for all ages and abilities looking for a less challenging outing.
A popular hiking area with inspiring views of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains is the Split Rock Wild Forest. Nearly twelve miles of trails within the 3,700-acre protected land offer a variety of terrain and rocky bays that wind through undeveloped forests and alongside small waterfalls. You can also take in some big mountain views with more challenging hikes up the short (but sometimes steep) Mount Gilligan trail near Elizabethtown, located somewhat inland between Keeseville and Port Henry. Views of the High Peaks abound, especially of the adjacent Giant Mount Wilderness and its namesake. If you prefer a shorter, easier adventure, The Lake Champlain Region is full of beautiful walks through hamlets and forests, with many under a mile and ideal for all ages and abilities looking for a less challenging outing. For seeing the beautiful fall foliage on two wheels, consider cycling on the Adirondack Coast Bikeways, the premiere network of 14 themed loops that is part of the 1,600 miles of the Lake Champlain Bikeways, which circumnavigate Lake Champlain. Looking to get off the roads and experience the thrills of more rugged terrain on your bike? Then check out Lake Champlain’s legendary mountain biking. The Lake Champlain Region features everything from berry-laden rocky outcroppings to green forests deep in the backcountry that will test your ability and inspire your sense of adventure. And as the Adirondack’s largest lake, Lake Champlain boasts some of the area’s best boating action anywhere. From sailing and canoeing to fishing, Lake Champlain in the fall is a boater’s paradise!
Nothing tells a story better than seeing history up close, and the Lake Champlain Region indeed has plenty to both show and tell.
Another historical treasure is nearby Crown Point State Historic Site, located in Essex County, on a peninsula in the town of Crown Point. The site includes two preserved fortifications from the colonial wars between the British and French. For a unique experience with picturesque views of the lake, take the Lake Champlain Bridge, a vehicular bridge which connects New York to Vermont as you transverse from one state to the other.
