An insider's guide to the "Most Fan First Event" on the PGA TOUR - The Safeway Open
The Main Event & The Venue
Bay Area golf fans know that late September in Napa Valley means one thing: The return of the Safeway Open presented by Chevron to the lush Silverado Resort and Spa. The marquee PGA TOUR event is in its fourth year with Safeway as title sponsor, and annual attendees have come to expect not just world-class golf, but also the very best in food, drink, and entertainment. The 2018 Safeway Open was named the “Most Fan First Event” on the entire PGA TOUR! This year’s five-day event promises to be even better, providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone—even if you’ve been here before.
First, there’s the golf itself. The Silverado Resort and Spa North Course offers a picturesque, sun-drenched setting in which to see 144 of the planet’s best golfers and fan favorites like Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Francesco Molinari, Fred Couples, Jim Furyk, and John Daly, compete for a $6.6 million purse (the Open’s largest ever) and the coveted wine-barrel trophy. And for a little extra star power, former four-time NFL All-Pro quarterback Tony Romo will join the field after accepting a Sponsor’s Invitation. Romo is an accomplished golfer himself, winner of the 2018 and 2019 American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe.

Watching golf at the Safeway Open is unlike watching any sport - particularly if you enjoy good food and drink.
Start with the hugely popular 25,000-square-foot Safeway Food & Wine Pavilion. All Safeway Open ticket holders will have free access to the two sunny viewing decks to watch the action on the course or chill inside the air-conditioned 360-degree sports bar with four large video walls to catch MLB, NFL, and college football games. The real attraction is the lineup of world class wines and pop-up restaurants by Michelin Star-studded chefs Thomas Keller, Iron Chef Morimoto, and Charlie Palmer. You can pair your meal one of more than 60 brands of beer or spirits or, when in Napa, a glass of legendary local wine.

You won’t go thirsty as you follow the action out on the course, either. It’s always happy hour on the 16th green, where Coors Light Beers for Birdies features discounted beer every time a player makes birdie or better on the hole. The 17th hole features the greenside Spirits Lounge, and the par-3 11th has the Brew Loft, with more than a dozen beers on tap. You can also watch players tee off on the final hole from the Japan Airlines Flight Deck on the 18th tee. Admission to all of these venues is included in the price of your ticket. Plus, CITI card members get the added benefit of access to the CITI Lounge, an upgraded hospitality suite with drinks for purchase while overlooking the 18th green.
Party All Night
But as the golfers head to the clubhouse and the sun goes down, the real party is only starting. Every night, Thursday through Saturday, after the on-course action is over, the Safeway Open transforms into a three-night music festival. This year, the Safeway Open Concert Series, live from the Chevron stage on the Silverado Mansion lawn, will welcome three major acts that will appeal to all musical tastes. On Thursday, country star Jake Owen will perform some of his ACM-award-winning tunes; Friday night will rock with Bad Company taking the stage and playing their classic hits; and Saturday will cap it off with Grammy-award winner and former Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas.
All this for how much?
Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Safeway Open experience is that all this, all three days of golf, dining, drinking, and music only costs $35 per day. A Safeway discount brings a five-day ticket down to just $85. For more information, visit safewayopen.com.
