San Antonio has been cow town for more than a century. In the years after the Civil War, the city flourished as melting pot of American, Spanish, and Mexican herding and horseback riding traditions were melded into a modern cowboy culture. But while the city hosted some of the earliest Texas Agriculture Fairs, there weren’t any permanent facilities that could host a livestock exposition worthy of San Antonio’s reputation. Recognizing this dilemma in the 1940s, Joe Freeman set out to build a coliseum that could house a world-class livestock show geared towards youth. While Freeman’s dream of a permanent home for ag education was finally realized in 1949, even he would have been hard pressed to envision what the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo would one day become.

More from San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
Agriculture is the foundation of Texas’s history — but it’s also the key to its future. Now more than ever, we must consider how to conserve, care for, and make best use of the land and animals that keep us alive and thriving. We must continue to develop practices and innovations to be better farmers and ranchers, stewards of the Earth. But these days, many kids grow up without the chance to raise livestock, compete in a rodeo, explore ranch culture, or even learn about the vital connection between them and the animals and land around them. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo exists to change that. Since 1949, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has grown into one of the largest events in the city, welcoming 1.3 million visitors to the fairgrounds every year. Built on scholarships, donations, grants, endowments, and the dedication of more than 6,000 volunteers, this event connects Texas youth to their roots in agriculture and ensures a healthier tomorrow for everyone.

When you think about cowboys, your mind paints a picture of a person with a few standard attributes: A strong work ethic, common sense, chivalry...
