Safety is central to gun ownership. After all, we want to protect ourselves and, more importantly, our family and loved ones. But responsible gun owners know that security is more than just knowing the right way to effectively handle and operate your firearm, it’s also about safely and securely storing that firearm when it’s not in use. Whether you own one or two rifles or compiled a large or small arsenal, every gun owner needs a reliable gun safe.
Unfortunately, as firearms continue to evolve, traditional gun safe companies have drifted out of touch with gun technology and the sound principles of gun storage, security, and home defense. In short, as the needs of gun owners have changed over the years, these companies haven’t, instead clinging to outdated approaches that, at best, are inconvenient for today’s gun owner and at worst, are downright dangerous.
Over the past two decades, SecureIt has designed and built armories and weapon storage systems for America's elite fighting forces. Today they are the global leader in military weapon storage and one of the fastest growing consumer gun safe companies. Their line of lightweight, modular gun safes is changing the way America thinks about gun storage, organization, security and fast access.
Gun Safe Myth Buster:
SecureIt debunks three common misconceptions about keeping your firearms safe and secure
A century ago, house fire was a serious risk — not just to your firearms, but to everything in your home. But today, the odds of a fire occurring in your home are relatively small. When a blaze does happen, the flame damage tends to be confined to the kitchen, if not just the oven or a pot on the stove.
Still, gun safe companies persist in using the fear of fire as a marketing tactic to sell their “fire-rated” products. The truth is, not only is the risk of a fire igniting and reaching your guns very low, but if the flames did somehow reach your armory, those so-called fire-resistant safes wouldn’t’ offer much protection, anyway.
Myth #1: Your Gun Safe Needs to be Fire Rated
By StoryStudio on September 17, 2024
Along the way, SecureIt has encountered a barrage of misinformation about gun safes. These common misconceptions mislead gun owners into spending more money than necessary, on storage solutions that are ineffective, inefficient, and often, insecure.
Below, the experts at SecureIt debunk three prevalent myths about gun safes to help protect you, your firearms, and, most importantly, your family.
To check their safes against fire, manufacturers usually devise their own tests without any oversight. Sometimes, they might bring in an outside company, but these testing firms are typically for-profit entities that are simply paid to administer the test designed by the manufacturer. Either way, the “test” is almost always putting the safe in a large oven and cranking the temperature to 1,200° Fahrenheit.
The problem: During a real fire, air can be moving faster than 60 mph and temperatures can soar far beyond 2000° Fahrenheit.
You (or a salesman) might say: “Well, some protection is better than none.” But that’s not entirely true. That’s because today’s gun safes are typically made with a single layer of thin steel and drywall. The convective properties of a full-on house blaze will quickly turn the gun safe into an oven, cooking and damaging your firearms. Plus, the drywall that is used is corrosive to your firearms and ammo.
Bottom line: Unless your gun safe is a double-walled steel safe filled with concrete, it will offer little to no real fire protection.
Myth #2: When it comes to gun safes, weight always equals security
It’s understandable that you might imagine any of your valuable possession safe and secure in a cartoonish 1,000-lb steel or iron safe. And granted, sometimes that’s a viable option. But the reality is much more complicated when it comes to gun safes and weight.
First, you’re going to pay for that tonnage any time you want to move the safe, or you move. The average American moves every 6.3 years. The cost to move and reinstall a heavy gun safe exceeds the purchase price. There is a reason the two most left-behind things when people move are hot tubs and gun safes.
Myth #3: It’s not a big deal if my manufacturer gives backdoor access to my safe to the government.
Most gun safe manufacturers keep backdoor access codes to all the safes they sell. They claim it is for warranty reasons. They also want you to fill out a detailed warranty registration card. The problem is two-fold: First, if there was a data breach at one of these companies, someone could get access to a list of gun safes — including yours — the locations, and codes to open them.
Second, gun safe companies may provide access codes to the government if requested. We saw this with Liberty Safe. They provided access to the FBI to a customer’s safe, simply on request.
Obviously, this presents a serious problem — not just in terms of security, but also privacy.
It’s also unnecessary. SecureIt gives its customers three different ways to enter their safe, using keys, codes, and biometrics. SecureIt safes do not have manufacturers master access codes. That way, gun owners can ensure fast access to their firearms without the risk of a data breach of government intervention. SecureIt believes the customer should have complete autonomy, security and privacy.
The troubles with weighty gun safes multiply if you rent. For one thing, many apartment buildings and condo and townhome homeowners’ associations won’t allow them because installation and weight can cause damage to the unit.
Conversely, SecureIt features an entire line of versatile Agile gun safes and safes that are modular, light weight and deliverable to your doorstep via UPS or FedEx. You can safely move and easily install these gun safes by yourself, wherever you want — and still sleep soundly knowing your firearms are safe and secure.
