Copenhagen Imports’ 50th Anniversary Collection Is a Testament to Timeless Design
The family nature of the locally-owned Copenhagen is but one of many reasons that John and many of his colleagues have established such impressive tenure. This community commitment translates to customer relations as well. John says many clients have consulted with him and his employees for decades, often having begun a project with just one key piece of furniture. “The customer-employee relationship at Copenhagen Living is as timeless as Contemporary European design,” says the man who has spent his career designing showrooms and managing the favorite store of his youth. The 50th Anniversary Collection celebrates these important relationships.” Visit the Copenhagen Living website to learn more.
Like furnishing a new model home, the 50th Anniversary Collection is designed to be a curated, exclusive collection, says John, a rare opportunity to save 20-30% on select styles that have never been marked down before. Copenhagen Living's buyers collaborated with their suppliers to offer these savings, selecting objects that best represented the store’s brand for returning customers and for those who’ve only recently discovered the appeal of crisp, timeless styling. “This is a very special opportunity at each of our seven stores,” says John, whose own area covers showrooms in Austin, El Paso, and San Antonio. “The overwhelmingly positive response suggests that returning and new customers have been very happy with our Anniversary Collection.”

Copenhagen sets the standard for furniture showrooms in other important ways as well, beginning with the 5-Year Warranty. The store also uses the Low Price Model to ensure the most economical prices. Generous financing is also available. The talented sales team to offers design assistance to customers whether they are starting from scratch or adding a signature piece, or two. Full-service delivery is available for one set fee. “Our customer service is quite outstanding,” John says. “We have folks who come in and buy furniture for one house and then return to buy the same style of furniture once they move to another home. It speaks to the timelessness of the style. We also work with Parade of Homes builders and others who have actually sold the furnished homes because the new homeowners were so satisfied with the home’s setting we had provided."
The Copenhagen Living showroom is filled with furniture that is easy to manage and clean, making it ideal for families. The company’s success continues to grow right along with San Antonio, as new residents are drawn to clean lines and smaller furniture profiles. Many longtime San Antonin’s are also moving away from the Texas Hill Country look, replacing large and bulky leather pieces that feature nail heads and other exposed hardware with smooth forms that fit effortlessly into our homes and everyday lives. Like the quality of their inventory, John says Copenhagen’s focus on customer service remains as strong as when, as a child, he and his mother would visit the Tucson, Arizona store. “It was a favorite outing of ours. We would visit sometimes just to see what was new and were never pressured by salespeople to buy. Our stores still have this reputation as a “no pressure to buy” environment, a place where customers can take their time making decisions about how to furnish their homes. We hear how much our visitors appreciate our customer service again and again.”
John says Contemporary European furniture carries a lower profile, like a neutral colored sofa that is free of heavy, engraved wood but features intricate stitching and a more interesting texture. This style doesn’t break up a room with large bulky items but blends into the home environment to create better sightlines and living flow through the rooms of the home. “Our manufacturers have really kept up with certain trends, adding power motion and elevated headrests without obstructing the clean lines which our designs are well known for,” says John, who was promoted to store manager after he designed the new San Antonio store eight years ago. “In many ways, as we see with the popularity of the modern farmhouse look, general trends in furniture design have caught up with our Contemporary European styles. You can see it in our tables that seamlessly combine glass, metal, and steel or how a living room chair inlays wood for added warmth to accent a high-quality fabric.”
Copenhagen Imports’ Texas regional manager, John Milk, is always quick to distinguish furniture design trends, such as sectional sofas with trendy style options like smoky mirrors and gold-plated tables. He should know - he’s been designing furniture showrooms for almost three decades. John has always admired interior design, recalling days when, as a child, his mother would take him along to visit his favorite furniture store in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona. After college, he was so impressed with the local Copenhagen’s holiday displays one year, he applied to work there as a seasonal employee. Twenty-eight years later, he’s still just as impressed by the “Contemporary European” style showcased inside the store. “It’s a timeless design that fits perfectly with our present desire to simplify our environments with functional pieces that look great,” John says. “It allows us to take a break from the constant visual overload that barrages us from social media and elsewhere. Our 50th Anniversary Collection really celebrates this style, curating craftsmanship that has remained popular for half a century."ry European” style showcased inside the store.
As the life of the party, you love to mingle and meet new people. You don’t shy away from trying new things, and you are always up for an adventure. Your office space should be no different! An accent wall of color, an open floor plan with seating options for colleagues and a vibrant, modern desk chair are great examples of options that will add a spirited touch to your workspace. If you are wondering where to start with color choices, orange offers a jolt of energy and innovation (just like you!). Since orange can easily become an overwhelming color, however, it is best used for accent pieces. To offset such a vibrant pop of color, consider office furniture with clean lines and modern touches. You are not afraid to mix it up, and your office aesthetic should showcase that quality. Creating an eclectic space to reflect your personality can be one of the toughest styles to get right ―but with a good eye for colors, textures and patterns, your bold personality will shine through to everyone who enters your office.
Spirited
Just as your office space is a direct representation of your unique personality, it can also be said that the interior design choices of your workspace influence you. Think that statement is a reach? Consider this: Most professionals spend 30% or more of their week at the office. If you add that up over time, the average person spends approximately 13 years and 2 months of their life at work. Our goal is not to leave you depressed (or toying with the idea of quitting your job!). Instead of viewing these statistics as daunting, imagine if your workspace was transformed into a space that feels like home because it represents you, a space with the right colors, textures and furniture choices to breed creativity, communication, focus or whatever purpose makes sense for you and your work style. Although most interior design articles give tips on achieving a specific style or aesthetic, interior design trends are only one piece of the puzzle. Another important aspect, possibly the most important aspect, is understanding how to create a workspace that blends modern-day style and aesthetics with the emotions and perceptions you bring to the table. Read over the various design concepts inspired by professional and personal styles to understand how to create a space worth potentially 13 years of your life.
Your leadership qualities come naturally. You pave your own way, independent from others, while always keeping an eye on the prize. Although your office space should be inviting to your colleagues, you also prefer to stay focused and undisturbed when it’s time to get results. Your office should be a place of focus, as well as a place for collaboration. You are in charge! To showcase your independent and ambitious qualities, oak tones and clean lines are a great starting point for creating a space that allows collaboration but also has enough simplicity to ensure you can focus when the time is right. Many who fall within a more direct personality style go with a modern approach ― think clean-cut furniture, neutral hues and polished leather and wood textures. Quirky and trendy are not the words that come to mind when expressing your individuality in the workspace. Instead, you likely gravitate toward words like clean, simple and well-made to drive your imagination when creating the right office space for you.
Analytical and detail-oriented, you are known for taking your time and making the right decisions. You are a textbook perfectionist and prefer to rely on only yourself to get things done. Your tidy office space should reflect these same rare qualities with sleek filing cabinets and very few distractions. The aesthetic and design choices of your office play a huge role in how you think and feel, and deep thinkers prefer to keep it modern and organized to drive their best work. Systematic personality styles may take inspiration from industrial spaces such as lofts, factories and new age hospitality spaces. Industrial-inspired office pieces, such as furniture with raw elements and designs that put practicality first, are a great fit to your functional work style. You prefer a calm and collected approach, much different than others who prefer bold colors and eclectic touches. You have likely spoken the words, “If it does the job, I am good with it.” You do not necessarily prefer a cookie-cutter approach, but functionality and low maintenance is always top of mind to ensure most of your time can be spent thinking about what matters.
Typically described as easygoing, you tend to be relaxed and warm. You make your colleagues feel at home, and they look to you as a great listener and problem solver. Although you may avoid sharing your own emotions and thoughts at times, you want your office space to be cozy and inviting to others. With soft colors and open seating, your work space is a direct reflection of your home space. You care about the functionality of your space, but you don’t place functionality over the feeling of keeping things simple and warm. Hues of brown and taupe and furniture choices that beckon others to stay a while add the perfect touch for someone with this peaceful and sympathetic style. Your office space may be tidy and uncluttered, but that is simply because you place quality over quantity in all aspects of life. You value time with others, and your well-made, timeless office design choices should reflect these qualities as a retreat for yourself and your colleagues.
The process of transforming your workplace into a space that reflects your personal style requires intentional furniture and design choices. With the right guidance, you can set up an office space that matches your body and mind to create the best you each and every day (for 13 years and 2 months, if we may be exact!). Ask yourself: Does my office space reflect who I am? Do the color palette, furniture choices and room layout foster the goals and motivations I have each day? If the answer is not a confident “yes,” use this guide to understand more about who you are and how to create a space that supports the best version of yourself both inside and outside of the workplace.

Don't forget features.
When deciding where to place your media cabinet, consider who will be watching TV and from where. You want the TV positioned just above eye level to avoid neck strain. To make sure everyone gets the best seat in the house, you may consider a curved sofa, which saves space and allows for optimal viewing. Will you put your media cabinet against a main wall or in a corner? Corner cabinets or models that swivel work well in small spaces. As your home entertainment equipment becomes more advanced, make sure your media cabinet has a solid foundation. High-quality media stands not only look great, but also contain features to enhance the hub of your home. To browse a wide selection of media cabinets, TV stands and other living room essentials, visit Copenhagen Imports at 18603 Blanco Road, San Antonio; its additional locations in El Paso and Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe and Tucson, Arizona; or online at copenhagenliving.com.

During a hyggeligt evening at home, you leave the work day behind. You let go of all distractions and concentrate on the people you’re with. You might relax in the living room together and enjoy conversation and a steaming cup of tea. Or you might sit at the dinner table long after the meal is over and talk about whatever comes to mind. You don’t sit next to each other and scroll through your Facebook feeds. “The phones and the computer go away,” says Copenhagen Imports owner Jens Hansen, a Dane whose father, Erik Hansen, relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, to cofound the store. “The phone distracts you from what’s actually important.” Although hygge is most commonly associated with cozy gatherings with others, you can also practice hygge on your own. “Light a candle, curl up with a blanket and a book and you’re there,” says Hansen.
Disconnect— literally and figuratively.
The Danes—considered the happiest people on Earth—follow a philosophy called hygge. Loosely translated, hygge (pronounced “hue-gah”) means cozy, but not just wearing-a-sweater cozy. Hygge is a state of well-being. Hygge comes from quality interactions with people you love. It’s gathering in a comfortable home in a way that has meaning. It’s relaxed and unplugged. There is no exact English translation for hygge, probably because Americans are too busy to create one! In a society where people pride themselves on the hours we work, how little we sleep and the status we achieve, a little more hygge could do us good. If, like most of us, you feel overwhelmed and overstressed, especially around the holidays, infuse your home with the spirit of hygge. Here’s how.
2
Warm light is a key component of the hygge atmosphere. “You can’t have hygge without candles,” says Hansen. “The flickering light and the dimly lit room are what we consider cozy.” Light clusters of candles in your favorite size, style and scent. Turn on a lamp or two, but keep the wattage low. Use dimmer switches on any overhead lighting. White Christmas lights also create a cozy, hyggeligt mood.
It’s hard to practice hygge when your main piece of furniture is a brand new, stark white sofa that’s stiff as a board. Yes, you want your furniture to look good in your home, but you also want comfortable furniture you can sink into. Curl up on a large chaise sofa. This piece from Copenhagen has three headrests that adjust manually to the most comfortable position. Add ample oversized throw pillows and a fleece blanket for optimum hygge.
3
Texture—a touch of soft, warm and natural—balances modern and/or minimalist design. Choose a mid-century modern-inspired natural teak dining room table or a walnut coffee table. Again, comfort is key. If organic elements help you feel more comfortable, by all means bring them into your home. If plush fabrics do the trick, use them. “It’s important to focus on the right materials for you,” says Hansen. “Do you need furniture that’s easy to care for? The [living] environment as a whole is important, but no one knows that more than you.”
4
Reducing clutter creates space for hygge in your life. However, a clutter-free home doesn’t have to mean perfect. What a relief! In a hyggeligt home, it’s okay to not pick up the kids’ toys when your friends come over. If you have a dish in the sink, don’t worry about it! Welcome guests into your home for dinner and conversation without worrying about keeping every surface spotless.
5
Comfort happens in an environment that you feel good in. It’s about creating an environment that’s your own.
When incorporating furnishings that evoke the spirit of hygge, choose a furniture showroom that understands comfort. For Copenhagen founders Tony Christensen and Erik Hansen, hygge was a way of life. That spirit continues today and Jens Hansen sums it up perfectly:
“We take time to listen to our customers and come up with a concept that fits their needs. We also make sure the customer has a lot of input in that process.” To bring more hygge into your home, browse Copenhagen’s large selection of living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. To sink into that sofa before you buy, stop by a store near you.
Light it low.
Incorporate comfortable furniture.
Incorporate warm, natural materials you love.
Don't worry about spotless.
Create your hygge holiday with Copenhagen
TV size plays a key role in which media cabinet you choose. John Milk, manager of Copenhagen Imports’s San Antonio, Texas, showroom, says TVs look best when there’s at least a couple inches to either side. The same rule applies if you hang your TV on the wall. “Imagine the TV as a piece of art,” he says. “You want the media cabinet to be size appropriate.” The height of the TV also determines the size of your media cabinet. If you place your TV on the cabinet, make sure it sits high enough for easy viewing.
Size matters
Gone are the days of wall-sized entertainment centers. Thanks to flat-screen TVs, online music players and sound bars, many homeowners store their electronics in media cabinets. For a fraction of the size of an entertainment center, a media cabinet gives your TV a solid place to sit or hang above. Inside, it has ample space to store audio and video equipment, gaming consoles and other accessories. As the central location for all things entertainment, the media cabinet serves as the hub of a media or family room. Media cabinets come in a variety of sizes and finishes to suit all tastes and entertainment needs. Your perfect media cabinet depends on your equipment, your room and your lifestyle. Does your home have a dedicated media room? Do you have an open floor plan with a multiuse living area? Are you half of a cozy couple or head of a family of five? Whether you need a spot for the TV or you’re designing a full-blown home theater, follow these guidelines to select a functional-yet-stylish media cabinet for your home.
Take stock of all your electronics: sound bar, gaming console, DVD/CD player, surround sound receiver, CDs and DVDs. Make sure your media cabinet has enough storage to discretely conceal these items. You may also want to allow for a couple open spaces, providing space for your system to grow. If you have an extensive music and movie collection, consider storing those in a nearby closet. Speakers may sit on stands at the sides of the room or you may have them installed in the ceiling, depending on your equipment. Certain models, such as the Corridor TV stand from BDI Home, have a sound bar or speaker shelf for proper sound dispersion. Adjustable shelves allow you to store gaming equipment, remotes and other odds and ends.
Media cabinets come in multiple wood finishes, as well as steel and other materials. Milk says walnut is always a popular choice, as it blends with both contemporary and more traditional décor. He’s also seeing a lot of grey stain on wood, which compliments the greys and taupes that are popular in today’s interior design. Steel, glass and gloss suit contemporary and modern decor. BDI Home’s Elements cabinet has an ultra-contemporary design and advanced features.
If you have small children and rambunctious dogs, you may not want a scratch-prone high-gloss cabinet. However, you don’t have to completely forego the contemporary look. Select BDI Home media cabinets feature black glass doors that resist scratching. If you accidentally scratch the glass, simply buff it out with a Scotch-Brite scouring pad.
Media cabinets come with features to assist in discrete storage as well as installation and sound quality. BDI Home cabinets come with adjustable shelves that you can configure as your system needs change. When you do have to add or change a piece of equipment, features such as integrated wire management, easy-access back panels, and wheels allow you to set up and update your media center easily. Safety straps secure your TV, preventing unwanted accidents and injuries. Strategic cutouts on the bottom, back and within the shelves allow heat from components to escape, keeping your equipment cool. Even shelf pins have purpose. Instead of pegs that may vibrate, BDI Home cabinets use vibration-damping shelf pins to secure adjustable shelves. When the volume kicks up, the pins don’t make noise.
What do you want to conceal?
Select a material that suits your style.
Think about your lifestyle.
Placement is key.
If you’re thinking about giving your home a Scandinavian touch, it may be its clean look that drew you in. Before you start furniture shopping, go through the rooms you want to redecorate. If they’re packed with wall-to-wall stuff, consider letting some things go. Scandinavian design means giving treasured items space to breathe—which also gives you space to move. De-cluttering your environment can reduce stress, which is key to Scandinavian living.
Clear the clutter.
Do you wish your living room looked less cluttered? Do you want to make a smallish space feel bigger? You can do both when you bring elements of Scandinavian design into your home. Scandinavian design means contemporary, comfortable, clutter-free living. “Scandinavian design focuses on simple products that perform simple functions,” says Jens Hansen, owner of Copenhagen Imports, a furniture showroom specializing in Scandinavian design with locations throughout Arizona and Texas. “It’s not about dressing things up and using unnecessary adornments. Each and every line has a purpose.” Here are a few ways to turn your living room, dining room, or any other room into a cozy Danish modern nest.
Choose furniture made from natural, solid wood—preferably lighter, unstained wood. Pair wood furniture with wool rugs, handmade ceramics, and linen, cotton, and leather fabrics. Materials with texture add warmth to your home. The Plank de Luxe dining table, made in Denmark, is made from solid oiled natural walnut. Its sculptural steel base contrasts nicely with the solidity of the wood, giving it a balanced, natural look.
“The Scandinavians have a passion for light because they spend much of year in darkness,” says Hansen. Make the most of your daylight hours by opening a room to natural light. Ditch the heavy window treatments for sheer white curtains or blinds that let the sunlight in. Plants, fresh flowers, and little pebbles and stones also add a natural, comfortable feel. Candles—a Scandinavian must—give off ambient light and help you and your space feel more relaxed.
When selecting furniture, start with pieces that will make an impact. First up: the sofa. Choose a sofa based on comfort first and design second. The Laird sofa and loveseat features clean design and cushions you can relax into. “When you’re just starting to redo a room, a sofa or sectional can make the biggest difference, because it’s such a focal point,” says Hansen. Choose a neutral, warm hue for your sofa and liven it up with vivid pillows and a blanket. Pair that with natural wood coffee and/or end tables. If you need more seating, go for a side chair placed in a corner. On its own, it makes a simple statement. When friends come over, you have an extra place for them to sit. “A couple dining or side chairs don’t take up much space,” says John Milk, store manager for Copenhagen Imports’s San Antonio location. “Make sure they’re of the size and scale to fit the space—no big arms.”
Don’t think you have to rush out and buy everything in a weekend. Take your time to find pieces you’ll love for years. “Danes have a passion for design,” says Hansen. “They collect a little at a time to find furniture that appeals to them and that they’re proud to own.” Ready to bring a little Scandinavian style into your home? Though we Americans have just begun to collectively embrace the word, the Danish have long understood the secret of hygge. And Copenhagen Imports, a family-owned and operated Danish furniture company, has been serving San Antonians its own sleek, sophisticated, and thoroughly modern brand of hygge for decades. Step into any Copenhagen Imports store, and you’ll immediately understand what hygge really means. Despite being the largest contemporary furniture showroom in San Antonio, the space is immediately welcoming—polished wood floors, rich buttery leathers, innovative overhead lighting, and walls lined with modern art. It’s sleek and sophisticated yet, at the same time, warm and homey. “We create a very refreshing retail environment in our stores,” says Copenhagen Imports co-owner Jorgen Hansen. “When they come in, people can get a really good idea of what the furniture will look like in their homes and be inspired.”
Last year, hygge made Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year shortlist. Pronounced hoo-guh, the quintessentially Danish word is defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” There’s really no direct English translation. “Cozy” comes close but doesn’t quite capture the full meaning of hygge—it’s a freshly poured, steaming latte; a soft, warm sweater; the feeling of gathering around a roaring fire with friends and loved ones; or, perhaps, the perfect cozy couch, armchair, or bed.
And there’s a lot to inspire. Copenhagen Imports offers customers a carefully curated yet expansive selection of furniture for every room in the house—from the office to the bedroom to the dining room, along with an array of beautiful lighting fixtures, art, and accessories. Its massive collection (there are over 150 different types of chairs to choose from at any given moment!) comes from both established, iconic designers and talented up-and-comers from around the globe. Items are high-end yet affordable, with a range of functions, styles, and price points that will appeal to everyone, from fresh-out-of-college Millennials furnishing their first apartments to seasoned homeowners with an eye for great design. “Our belief is that our furniture should be simple, well-designed and functional,” says Hansen. “Everything in our showroom is selected for its design elements, value, superior quality and workmanship. Our furniture is for those with a passion for design, who appreciate quality and functionality.” Though the Danes are credited with inventing the minimalist, carefully crafted aesthetic known today as Danish modern, the movement—which began in Denmark in the 1920s with designers like KaareKlint, Arne Jacobsen, and Hans Wegner—has since spread across the world.
Today, the Hansens travels all over Europe, Asia, and the Americas, seeking out fresh takes on Copenhagen’s signature style: clean lines, contemporary comfort, and timeless design. “Wherever we can find really excellent design and good quality, that’s what we put in our stores,” he says. “We look at it as functional art for your living space.” Copenhagen Imports’ story dates back to 1970. Danish founders Erik Hansen (Jorgen’s older brother) and Tony Christensen saw a distinct lack of quality, contemporary furniture in the still-developing city of Phoenix, Arizona and opened the first Copenhagen Imports furniture showroom—dedicated solely to the Danish modern style—to fill this void.
The concept was new to the valley, and other local store owners scoffed at their designs. “That stuff will never sell,” they said.“Six months and they’re out!” Quite the contrary! Copenhagen’s furniture sold so well, in fact, that Hansen and Christensen were able to quickly open new Arizona locations in Tempe, Tucson, and Scottsdale. After that, they expanded into Texas, debuting their concept with great success in El Paso, and then, under the leadership of Erik’s son Jens Hansen, expanded into Austin and, of course, San Antonio. Today, Copenhagen corners the market in south-central Texas with beautiful, adaptable, modern furniture that’s built to last. It’s the kind of furniture you can pass down to your children and that your children can pass down to their children. It’s the kind of furniture that brings sophistication—and a healthy dose of hygge—to any living space.
