FX says working primarily in San Francisco makes a big difference too.
“Sean and I are invested in San Francisco succeeding,” he says. “We see the success of San Francisco as being our success. San Francisco is a key cog in the U.S. economic machine, and we're invested in it.”
Sean notes working in San Francisco brings other benefits too. “A desk goes together the same everywhere in the world, but it goes together a little easier with a view of Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge.”
The management transition, a potential quagmire, at Service West has also been attractive, a carefully developed strategy for the sake of the company and each other.
"My mom and dad have always encouraged us to speak our minds," FX says. "My dad also discussed the business with us when we were kids. This open communication has been critical since my dad told us he wanted to retire.”
"Our transition has taken a lot of careful planning and intent," Sean says. "We enlisted the help of our executive team and entrusted them with our plan. It may seem like an obvious solution, but a key step was my father picking a date and sticking to it. Having the date has been our North Star. It makes the planning a lot more focused.”
For his part, Mark has called his retirement preparation "hard work, a full-time job.”
“I've done what I set out to do; I've fulfilled my parents' dream,” he says.
Service West has continued to thrive during the management transition, launching trucks onto the challenging streets of San Francisco and storing and installing furniture for premier clients with the highest expectations of excellence. Our culture is that we develop our people from within, create a career path. You may start unloading trucks, but you can move up to lead crews and make a good life for your family.
Mark has entered business like his father, who moved to America from Ireland and became a successful furniture salesman. After graduating from St. Mary's College, Mark was prompted by his father to start out on his own.
"My father said, 'I didn't come to this country to have my son work for someone else; I want you to start a business.'" Mark says. "My father had worked with installation companies. He saw a need for a furniture installation company, so I started Service West."
Mark created a business on the same premise he'd seen in his father's vocation, hard work, fairness and honesty. He knew a successful venture would rely upon open communication with the client. He engaged in innovations like custom-written software based on millions of manhours that allow Service West technicians to streamline procedures, overcome potential obstacles and negotiate challenging schedules and logistics.
"We began Service West when San Francisco was becoming the world's technology hub," Mark says. "Today, we deliver at least a couple million pounds of furniture per month with a very low error rate."
Like their father, Sean and FX Vignoles studied humanities as undergraduates. After working several other jobs, Sean in janitorial services and FX in San Francisco politics, the brothers joined their father in management roles at Service West.
"As a family business, we benefit in having continuity in management style," Sean says. "I have seen more family businesses go wrong than go right. We spend a lot of time planning and preparing."
“Sean and I have always been really close,” FX adds. “We know the lanes where we can crossover and when to stay in our lane. We don't force anything on clients either; they can work with whomever they prefer. Being brothers, our management styles mesh well together."
Mark says family ties extend far beyond management at Service West.
"There's family and extended family; myself and my sons are here," says Mark. "But we also have many employees who are relatives of other people at Service West. There are a ton of people who are more connected by means other than working together. This allows us to generate the team feeling.”
The Service West team also stretches from the installers to the drivers to the boardroom. The company is bolstered by being unionized workers, something Mark, FX, and Sean feel seriously about.
In the field, it gives us a lot of retention, a higher level of skill and care,” says Mark. “We have the only unionized warehouse in our market, and they are the highest performers in our industry. There is an expression of trust that you don't get elsewhere. I have been on the other side of a non-union workforce, and you can just feel it. It’s a sense of security and loyalty that goes both ways. “

We hear plenty about succession these days, whether it’s the coronation of King Charles III or a fictional hit TV series about ill-behaved siblings vying for their dad’s affection and proverbial keys to the castle. The management transition from Service West’s CEO, Mark Vignoles, to his sons, FX and Sean, is no fairy tale or fictional story. The three Vignoles and a team of advisors have worked tirelessly to make Mark's impending retirement seamless. Much like their company, the result is a model all family-owned businesses can follow.
Service West is the largest commercial furniture installation, warehousing, and logistics company in the U.S. The company is well known for its exceptional customer service, working closely with each client from the first phone call to the final minute of installation.
“There is a lot of planning before we ever set foot on the job site,” says Mark. “We do a preinstall meeting with the whole team. We review potential obstacles and walk the site with the general contractor, among other steps, as part of our ongoing communication.”
With over 250 full-time employees, Service West is widely known for its efficiency and great customer experience on projects throughout California, including complete installations in the Salesforce Tower, office buildings in the Financial District, and all over Southern California. Service West also enjoys a stellar reputation for employee benefits and retention.
"Our culture is that we develop our people from within, create a career path," says Mark Vignoles. "You may start unloading trucks, but you can move up to lead crews and make a good life for your family."
