Summer is for exploring. The long, warm days invite us to try new things, to venture out of our usual routines, to challenge ourselves. Summer exploration means different things for different kids; some love to step out into nature, pushing their physical limits as they learn about the ecosystems around them, while others like to use their summer freedom to explore the nooks and crannies of their imaginations, reading and telling stories or inventing elaborate creations. Summer gives kids a perfect incubation period for developing innovative ideas and an ideal space for trying on new personas.
One of Sonoma Academy’s most treasured tenets is the idea that exploration makes explorers. When students are given the opportunity to take risks and to try new things in a supportive, safe environment, they develop the resilience and confidence they need to grow and to thrive. This is as true for elementary age kids as it is for our high school students, which is why exploration is a key element of Sonoma Academy’s Summer @ Sonoma Academy camp program from June 9 through June 27.

Campers can tell stories and learn the basics of taiko drumming in the Performing Arts Center; shoot, edit, and produce short films in the Media Studio; they can hone their culinary chops in the Teaching Kitchen; they can sharpen their skills on the soccer field or create art projects in the art studio or “en plein air” on the beautiful campus. Whatever the week’s focus, campers at Sonoma Academy are encouraged to take initiative and pursue their own paths. Instructors strive to create an environment where students know that there is no shame in being a beginner and that the process of critical thinking, experimentation, prototyping, and yes, even failure can be fun! Practice doesn’t make perfect – it makes for grit, self-knowledge, and mastery.

Nestled on 34-acres at the base of Taylor Mountain in southeastern Santa Rosa, Sonoma Academy’s campus provides beautiful and high tech spaces for summer explorers. The Guild & Commons building, internationally recognized for its sustainable architecture, holds a fully equipped fabrication studio, wood shop, and toy lab, video and audio production studios, a teaching kitchen, and cutting-edge technology like 3D printers, laser engravers, and digital editing software.
Like Sonoma Academy’s academic program, its summer camps are grounded in the notion that students learn best in a supportive, connected community where they can get in touch with their natural drive to explore. With week-long programs for every kind of explorer, 2025 promises to be Sonoma Academy’s most exciting and fun summer yet!

While it’s important for kids to have the space and time to explore on their own, they benefit greatly from the help of an experienced guide. Instructors at Sonoma Academy’s camp program include many members of the school’s faculty, nationally recognized experts in their fields who deeply understand what kids need to learn and thrive. Whether campers are working with the coach of a state-ranked debate team, a Moth StorySlam winner, the leader of an award-winning robotics team, or a media specialist who has worked with famous musicians all over the world, they are given personal attention and encouragement.
