With mental health being such a hot topic these days, it’s crucial parents give their children every possible opportunity for success. Choosing the right mastery-based program model can absolutely create mental and social confidence for kids – confidence which they can then carry over into other aspects of their lives for a more prominent future.
How Using a Mastery-Based Program Model Can Instill Mental and Social Confidence in Kids
Premier High Schools were recently awarded a coveted A-rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), which is no easy feat to accomplish due to the TEA’s rigorous standards of excellence. Much of this A-rating can stem back to the drama-free nature of Premier, boosting the mental health of students while improving their social skills.
A substantial number of students who attend Premier High School enroll with a track record of failure, having been recommended to the school by an ISD counselor or family member. Lacking a track record of success, the majority of them arrive with disparagingly low confidence in themselves. Since Premier High Schools don’t have a model where students can keep their heads down and pass without doing the work, there is no skating by under the radar.
As a solution, Premier requires an A-grade out of every student before they can move on to the next lesson. This might seem daunting, but in fact it has the opposite effect. Premier understands the importance of every student receiving that first “A” to boost their confidence on a standardized test. The achievement quickly becomes a life-changing experience for the kids since they have their first real A they earned.
Winning the Mental Health Battle
With mental health finally getting the level of concern it deserves, many parents are prioritizing this issue. When you consider the amount of anxiety a typical high school student experiences at a traditional ISD, there is a huge amount of pressure that weighs on their mental well-being.
However, when students switch to the relaxed atmosphere at Premier, they aren’t forced to carry that same burden.
The effect this innovative, mastery-based curriculum has on kids’ mental health cannot be understated. Taking the drama and stress out of school to focus on education and achievement works wonders, helping prepare young people for the rest of their adult lives – especially in realizing what they are truly capable of so they can always build real expectations for themselves.

The Difference Between Direct-Teach and Mastery-Based Systems
In a traditional, direct-teach model, each week the teacher is covering a specific lesson plan with all tests prescheduled for everyone in the class. Let’s say a student is taking six classes that semester – if the student falls behind in one class, that can suddenly cause a disaster. This is a challenge of any large education environment; it's difficult to provide any child with unique educational needs the level of attention that they deserve. A mastery-based system compensates for this by constructing the class from the individual outwards — every student learns at their own pace, in a comfortable environment, with a personalized plan to graduate.
The concept behind mastery-based learning is that it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you do something, only that you do it right and have successfully learned the lesson. At Premier High Schools, there is still a curriculum and teacher; the key difference is the program is not on a fixed schedule. Students can study the material at their own pace and take the tests whenever they are ready. Until the students passed the couse, etc., the student does not proceed to the next lesson.
