You’re ready to start a business career, move up, or transition to a better position with more potential earnings and intrigue. But how do you find a program that fits into your schedule and allows you to do your best work? The Texas A&M-San Antonio College of Business offers flexible plans that support MBA candidates from diverse situations, so that they excel. The fast-tracked 11-month MBA features on-campus intensive learning while other plans include virtual MBA tracks with flexible options of 16-, 20- and 24-month programs.
“It’s important to understand that all our programs are essentially the same, a rigorous curriculum that covers the fundamentals of an MBA degree," says Adrian Guardia, executive director of graduate programs. "The difference is in the fundamentals, the convenience of a virtual education, the intensity of the 11-month degree, and the traditional cohort configuration of the longer programs."
Guardia understands that not every path to an MBA is the same. A former HR director for companies that include JP Morgan Chase, Harris, and Macy’s, he transitioned into academia 13 years ago. Fortunately for his students, he brought his address book with him. Together with his peers, Guardia has produced a list of community contacts that exceeds 100 professionals.
“We continue to build this volume for a variety of internships, mentorships, and other assets,” says Guardia.
Guardia is especially proud of the relationship that the College of Business has constructed with nearby Randolph Air Force Base.
“We have placed students in civil service at Randolph Air Force Base,” he says. “They intern for two years and may be invited to commit further. These are high-paying positions that can take students outside human resources as they become highly valued civil servants.”
“It’s a win-win-win for our MBA programs, our master’s candidates, and the U.S. Air Force,” he continues. “We hope to expand this program to provide more students with the opportunity.”

The Texas A&M–San Antonio MBA faculty know that their students come from many different backgrounds. For some, virtual sessions make the most sense, as students can stream lectures and schedule projects according to their personal schedules. Candidates with commitments at home and established careers often choose this program. They also appreciate the flexibility to complete their MBA in 16, 20, or 24 months.
“Our faculty have worked hard to expand their skills from straightforward lectures to more dynamic presentations, often synching a recorded session with a live classroom,” Guardia says. “I applaud them for working in developmental sessions to improve the virtual sessions, from creating breakout session engagement to more stimulating lectures.”
The in-person program may also be completed in one of these three timeframes. On campus, students are placed in cohorts that offer a diversity of academic history, e.g., an accounting bachelor with a graduate degree in statistics paired with someone who majored in the humanities. Students, who will work together throughout their matriculation, meet frequently with their “teammates” for study sessions and cohort projects. Candidates who are in mid-career often enroll on campus to enhance their positions and get up to speed with trends and changes in their chosen fields.
"They're looking for a contemporary infusion beyond their work," Guardia says. "They may feel they lack understanding or feel their fundamentals have aged out over time and are now insufficient in the new world of business.”
The new 11-month MBA program is ideal for students who can commit to meeting three times a week for three-hour sessions, in addition to outside cohort work. These are often early-career people who are anxious to get going and move swiftly toward employment.

“We work hard to guarantee that the rigor is consistent,” says Guardia. “You never phone in your work here; there are challenges, regardless of your method of engagement. Our students rise to that level. That said, we try to meet students where they are to accommodate their schedules because of their career demands and home obligations. We recognize that life may get in the way.”
The Texas A&M Univeristy-San Antonio College of Business MBA is a demanding education that has produced extraordinary results for graduates throughout San Antonio, the U.S., and internationally. Candidates take many different avenues, including virtual and in-person, over a 16, 20, or 24-month tenure, as well as the novel 11-month intensive.
