The Chevron Championship: Empowering Women On and Off the Course
A Tournament You Won’t Want to Miss
SPONSORED BY The Chevron Championship
As the first of five major championships on the LPGA Tour, The Chevron Championship in 2024 is primed to set the stage for the coming season. Now in its second consecutive year at The Club at Carlton Woods – a prestigious Jack Nicklaus signature course in The Woodlands – golf fanatics are given a golden opportunity to attend one of the biggest women’s golf events of the year.
On top of riveting golf action throughout the week from April 17-21, the Championship provides an impressive schedule of exciting things for attendees to see and do. Some of these exclusive fan experiences include golf simulators and VR experiences, family-friendly STEM programming and studio time in the Inspiration Dome, and plenty more in the Spectator Village, where everyone can immerse themselves in the world of golf.
As the golf world gears up for an exhilarating new season, the LPGA Tour is hosting its first major of the year in Greater Houston with the return of The Chevron Championship. More than just a golf tournament, this upcoming week stands out as a world-class competition with a big twist – making an impact off the course too. As a celebration of empowerment that brings together top-tier female athletes, inspiring stories and a commitment to fostering change, this will once again be an event for the ages!
Transforming Dreams Into Reality
“We are pleased to offer six aspiring golfers an exemption into The Chevron Championship,” commented Al Williams, Vice President, Corporate Affairs at Chevron. “These highly sought-after amateur spots are an integral part of this Championship and aligns with one of our core goals as title sponsor, which is to create more access and opportunity for amateurs from diverse backgrounds to enter the professional game.”
One of these aspiring athletes who qualified for an exemption last November is 22-year-old American Megan Schofill, who has now obtained a professional shot at glory. “The Chevron Championship will be my major debut and I couldn’t be more excited,” said Schofill, the 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur winner. “Playing in majors has always been my dream, and the fact it’s actually happening is very surreal.”
The same goes for Chiara Horder of Germany. At just age 20, she played golf at Texas Tech University and earned her spot in The Chevron Championship field by winning the 2023 British Women’s Amateur. “I can’t wait to compete in The Chevron Championship,” she said. “I’m also really looking forward to returning to Texas, where I studied for three years and having my friends come out to support.”
Beyond the Fairways: Driving Opportunities for Everyone
With a calculated approach to fun, inspirational golf at the highest level and promoting genuine change happen in the world, The Chevron Championship is breaking down barriers for women and girls both on and off the golf course.
“This is more than golf; it’s an opportunity to inspire young girls, spotlight women athletes and create inclusive spaces for everyone,” commented Josetta Jones, Chevron’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer.
The partnership between Chevron and the LPGA Foundation also offers support to local organizations across the magnificent city of Houston. The commitment shared by the two organizations is not only to elevate women in sports but also to help advance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming, as well as professional development.
“We are thrilled to be able to give back to our featured partners in diversity, inclusion and education through our Championship initiatives and we look forward to building on this inspiring platform in years to come,” Jones said.
In 2023, Chevron was able to work with the LPGA Foundation to donate a staggering $2,950,000 to numerous locally based foundations, including Catalyst, National Society of Black Engineers, Techbridge Girls, Fab Foundation and many others.
As The Chevron Championship approaches, golf fans and enthusiasts across Greater Houston and beyond have a chance to participate in this once-a-year experience. Both the LPGA Tour and Chevron encourage Houstonians to learn more about the tournament and the initiatives the week will support.

The Chevron Championship in 2023 was an indelible moment in the career of Lilia Vu, who captured her first major title at Carlton Woods last April. The California native struggled as a young professional, nearly stepping away from the game in 2020. Through determination and hard work, Vu resurrected her career and found the LPGA Tour winner’s circle four times in 2023, rising to No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. She looks at her 2023 Chevron victory as one of the key moments that cemented her success.
“Winning The Chevron Championship, my first major victory, was a total dream come true,” Vu said. “When I look back on my career, I will always remember that week in The Woodlands as one of the most special of my life.”
Athletes not only compete at the highest level but also serve as role models who motivate other aspiring female golfers to pursue their dreams. The Chevron Championship goes as far as adding qualifying amateurs, giving them a chance to compete in the event.
