What would you have done with a little more support in navigating your childhood struggles? How might the supportive ear or helping hand of a grown-up have guided your way at a moment when it was hard to see the light?
Young or old, everyone encounters difficulties that feel too big to handle. While most adults develop the resilience and adaptability to help themselves overcome these obstacles, they can feel unbearable for youth whose life skills are still developing. But what if every child who needed support in a moment of crisis had access to a free service that connected them to a qualified, trained adult or peer mentor dedicated to helping them transcend such challenges?
That ideal is a reality for the youth of Sacramento County, thanks to the work of The Source. The Source is a dedicated team of Therapists and Youth Peer Mentors offering round-the-clock support, fielding calls, texts, and live chats from young people and their parents or caregivers who are experiencing a crisis and in need of immediate support. This vital service extends to anyone in Sacramento County under the age of 26, with a special focus on youth in foster care. When someone in need reaches out, a trained professional is there right away with the skills to help — even, if needed, by responding in person — 24 hours per day, anywhere in Sacramento County. “The Urgent Response Therapists’ superpower is our clinical background,” says Sheridan O’Neal, a therapist at The Source. “We’re coming into our role with a little bit more of an understanding of some of the issues our clients are facing.”

Unwanted hair growth is something many of us deal with. The days of stubborn shaving, razor bumps, and ingrown hairs are over thanks to laser hair removal, a simple treatment that will save you time, money, and stress when it comes to hair growth. Laser hair removal is a convenient and fast treatment (averaging around 30 minutes per session) that utilizes a concentrated beam of light laser to remove hair and inhibit future hair growth in the area. The treatment is largely pain-free; however, clients will need to keep the treated area(s) out of the sun for a week following treatment.

Botox and Fillers
Botox and fillers are a fantastic option for those looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines or add some plump to your lips. Using a very thin needle, medical professionals administer the treatment into the desired areas of the face. Typically, injectables and dermal fillers involve minimal discomfort, and most clients can return to their day-to-day responsibilities immediately after treatment. In all stages of your beauty journey, your aesthetic consultant can detail each offering including effective wrinkle relaxers like Botox , FDA-approved lip fillers, and more to ensure your choice aligns best with your goals.
Ultherapy
Usually starting around age 25 when our bodies begin to produce less collagen, we notice changes, or sagging, in our skin. Ultherapy skin lifting is the FDA- cleared solution you need to build that collagen bank back up to restore plump, tight and youthful looking skin. Ultherapy uses safe ultrasound energy to naturally initiate the production of new collagen deep within your skin. You’ll see skin tightening results after the first treatment and continued improvement for up to six months. The team of trusted advisors can put together a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs, setting you up for your perfect skin.
IPL Photofacial
IPL Photofacial uses pulses of light energy to fade age spots, sunspots and freckles, while evening out skin tone, redness and hyperpigmentation. This FDA-approved treatment targets and gently heats the red and brown areas of your skin impacted by sun damage, ultimately causing them to flake off and unveil clearer, brighter skin for a makeup look without the makeup. For those interested in anti-aging results for your skin, IPL Photofacial provides a quick, effective, and affordable method to achieve radiant looking skin.
CoolSculpting
We’re all on a journey toward looking and feeling our best. Many people, however, wrestle with stubborn fat even after exhausting all efforts to work it out. Enter CoolSculpting , a noninvasive, FDA-cleared treatment that utilizes patented, controlled cooling technology to eliminate up to 25% of fat cells in the desired area without the need for surgery. CoolSculpting targets problem areas beneath the skin to freeze, kill and ultimately destroy only the fat cells from the body, producing lasting results that you will love. After just two sessions, clients will see a 73% greater fat reduction versus just one treatment.
CoolTone
It’s like 20,000 sit ups in 30 minutes. The abdomen, buttocks and thighs can be targeted with CoolTone treatments that produce tighter and firmer results that will last. Under a process called magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) initiated by CoolTone technology, muscles undergo involuntary contractions, therefore strengthening the muscles within the treatment area. This process feels similar to that of an odd muscle spasm or twitch, however for the large majority of patients it is not at all painful. Results are typically noticeable after four weeks of treatment. CoolTone is FDA-cleared and backed by science, designed for anyone looking to become more toned without any recovery time.

It takes the awareness, understanding, and contributions of the entire community to uplift youth in need. In service of this belief, The Source’s 24-hour services also connect youth with available resources like medical support, therapy, suicide prevention, pregnancy assistance, and food resources to name a few. In addition to making sure basic needs are met, The Source knows that it’s important for youth to feel supported and form connections with those around them, hosting monthly events for community members to gather, share a warm meal, play games, and perhaps celebrate a holiday together.
As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Every family needs help when it comes to making sure children and young adults have what they need to grow into happy, healthy, and independent individuals. By providing round-the-clock crisis support, community, access to resources, mentorship, caregiver assistance, and more, The Source is working to ensure that the youth of Sacramento County feel the support they deserve from our local community. This program is funded by the Division of Behavioral Health Services through the voter-approved Proposition 63, Mental Health Services Act (MHSA). Learn more at https://thesourcesacramento.com.

But The Source does more than 24-hour crisis support. By connecting kids with Youth Peer Mentors, many of whom spent time in foster care themselves, the program strives to provide a supportive place for youth who may feel misunderstood or alone. “I was in some form of foster care from when I was five until I was 24,” says Clayton Bucholtz, one of the program’s Youth Peer Mentors. “We have unique experiences that not everybody can relate to.” These mentorships, built on a foundation of shared experience, nurture a sense of belonging, understanding, and perspective for what life after foster care might look like. By leveraging this unique blend of professional expertise and peer mentorship, The Source is making a profound impact on young people’s lives.

This skilled attention can make a world of difference. The American Academy of Pediatrics cites mental and behavioral health as the largest unmet health need for children and teens in foster care and names the presence of at least one nurturing, responsive caregiver who is stable in the child’s life over time—something that foster children often go without—as critical for good mental health. This is what makes The Source’s interventions so important, particularly for youth experiencing hardship. According to a 2009 paper from the Journal of Vulnerable Children and Youth Studies, “The use of evidence-based interventions for children in foster care has the potential to decrease the widespread disparities in health and mental health outcomes.” For many of those The Source serves, the program’s assistance may be the only option for mental health resources.

Foster parenthood presents its own set of unique challenges. It isn’t easy to lend support to a child in a new, unfamiliar situation who may exhibit challenging behavior as a result of their trauma. Additionally, foster parents can face difficulties interacting with the birth family and getting the child adjusted to their school environment. In the event that these issues create tense and stressful situations in the home, The Source’s 24/7 support is there to help de-escalate and provide comfort. “As a foster parent and educator, I often feel surrounded and sometimes overwhelmed with the mental health needs of the teens in my life,” wrote caregiver RosaLee Hagstrom in a recent thank-you letter to The Source’s staff. “I look to The Source to create an option where teenagers are able to connect with a worker and peer counselor in a less threatening environment.” Supporting Sacramento County’s youth, particularly those in difficult situations, means supporting the entire foster ecosystem—including the caregivers. That’s why the Source organizes monthly caregiver support groups, providing a platform for dialogue and mutual support among caregivers, creating a community around shared experiences and understanding. These services aren’t limited to foster parents — The Source acknowledges that parenting can be hard for anyone, and support is available for the benefit of all who need it.
