St. Anthony’s turns 70,
and RECOGNIZES seven decades
of providing food, shelter, clothing,
and hope to San Francisco
Only 100 guests were expected for the first hot meals served (free then as they are today) by St. Anthony's Dining Room, but when more than 400 hungry people showed up on the night of October 4, 1950, founder Father Alfred
and his volunteers fed them all.
Founded by the Franciscan Friars, St. Anthony's commitment to service and welcoming all those who are in need started that night and continues to this day as a Franciscan ministry, 70 years later. St. Anthony’s has served more than 45 million meals (as many as 3,800 per day) and has grown to do so much more.
As men and women filed into the Dining Room, St. Anthony’s staff saw in them the other needs that were not being met in the community. They saw people who needed stability. There were people who needed help
with substance use disorders and those who needed clothes and medical attention. People needed shelter,
and access to information. That’s why St. Anthony’s worked to expand its offerings, appealing to donors
and volunteers to help uplift their fellow citizens and make San Francisco a better place for all.
In addition to hot food served daily, the organization distributes more than 36,000 free pieces of new and like-new clothing to individuals and families every year, provides primary and specialty care to nearly 2,500 patients in their Medical Clinic, and offers access to online tools, training, and resources through their Tech Lab. All of this from
the heart of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. These are just some of the ways St. Anthony’s has adapted
over the years to become an essential part of the community. By seeing the dignity in every human being,
St. Anthony’s has evolved over seven decades to provide much more than just a meal.
During times of greatest need, gifts such as yours allow us to continue providing necessities
to our most vulnerable guests.
