future-ready medical education
Traditionally, knowledge has been passed down from elder to youth, master to apprentice, and teacher to student. This academic hierarchy still exists on many university campuses worldwide. However, at Touro University Nevada, a non-profit institution dedicated to making a positive impact on healthcare education, the faculty and staff view their students as equals rather than subordinates. Touro values their students by fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment, encouraging open communication, and providing personalized mentorship to help each student achieve their full potential as future healthcare leaders.

“It’s not a top-down system,” says Wolfgang G. Gilliar, DO, FAAPMR, Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro Nevada. “We value you as a student because you have value. Each student brings their difference to school to make a difference in everyone else’s education. Once you arrive in medical school, I see you as a colleague.”
Dr. Gilliar and his colleagues pride themselves on an open-door policy, welcoming any student who has questions or concerns, even those not directly related to school, or just wants to strike up a discussion. The faculty and staff, all leaders in their respective fields, are always available.
This emphasis on the students’ overall well-being, beyond just their academic success, makes sense when you consider that one of the school’s centerpiece programs is the College of Osteopathic Medicine, built around the philosophy that each person is a combined unit of mind, body, and spirit. Touro’s DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) program graduates more medical school students annually than any other school in Nevada based on federal IPEDS data.
In addition, The College of Health and Human Services offers comprehensive training in nursing, occupational therapy, education, physician assistant studies, and physical therapy.
Touro Nevada students are diverse, dynamic, and driven, eager to support each other’s educational journey and career. And the students work alongside the faculty and staff in their commitment to social justice, intellectual pursuit, and the service to humanity.
The Judaic values of teaching, service, and learning are fundamental to Touro Nevada and its mission to provide expanded healthcare and education services to their Nevada community and beyond. Outreach is key tenet of Touro Nevada, which encourages volunteerism among students and teachers, alike.
For instance, through programs like Touro’s Mobile Healthcare Outreach Initiative and the Stallman Touro Clinic at The Shade Tree shelter, faculty and students, deliver essential acute medical care to the area’s underserved populations. This not only provides a much-needed community service, but it also promotes empathy and leadership that will serve Touro graduates in healthcare and education for the rest of their careers.
Touro students are not just the future — they are community leaders of today, ready and eager to uplift and empower their community.
