With the holidays upon us, now is time to take stock of everything we’re grateful for and to look out for those in our community who could use a helping hand. At The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma, volunteers are ramping up much needed assistance to local families and individuals who struggle with housing, food insecurity and more. Make a life-changing difference this holiday season by contributing to The Salvation Army, which provides key resources and services to Oklahoma City residents and nearby communities.
Though mostly known for its holiday bell ringers and Family Thrift Stores, The Salvation Army works year-round in over 133 countries to provide the most needed and targeted aid. "After 100 years of service in Central Oklahoma, The Salvation Army’s mission remains the same,” says Area Commander Major Charles Powell. “By assessing the greatest needs in our community, we can bridge the gaps for those who need it most.”
By analyzing what is lacking on a hyper-local level, the organization provides essential services and initiatives based on specific community needs. This means that when you donate to The Salvation Army, you know that your gift will have a strong impact within your area. All money given locally stays local, with 82 cents on the dollar going directly to local programs.
There are other ways to contribute, including volunteering. Organize a small group to prepare and serve dinner at the Red Shield Diner, which provides meals to families facing food insecurity. Or join Night Watch, a team of volunteers who head out to the streets of Oklahoma City every week to share food, blankets, clothing, and toiletries with unhoused individuals. Volunteers are always needed to help stock the client choice food pantry and assist clients will they select items. For those who enjoy working with kids, there are opportunities to help youth with reading, writing and virtual learning through participating with The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma City.

Times have been tough for hundreds of thousands in the Sooner State. Last year, The Salvation Army provided over 43,000 nights of shelter in Central Oklahoma. "I was so overwhelmed" said Morgan, a guest of The Salvation Army Emergency Shelter and the mother of two young sons. "When you don't know where your kids are going to sleep, it's hard to think about anything else. I am so grateful for The Salvation Army, because knowing I had a safe and clean space to rest, gave me the freedom to breathe."
In addition to providing a roof over the heads of the unhoused population, The Salvation Army works hard to offer essential food items in their Client Choice Food Pantry. The pantry allows families to browse rows of nutritious and delicious food items just like in a grocery store, selecting ingredients they’ll actually use rather than a random assortment of goods in a prepackaged grocery bag. This initiative promotes healthy living while helping combat the heartbreaking statistic that one in five children in Oklahoma go to bed hungry.
Committed to fighting poverty on all fronts, The Salvation Army provides a range of financial assistance programs. These include measures to fight homelessness through rent and utility assistance and anti-poverty initiatives that look to break the cycle by addressing the core causes of poverty like lack of job opportunities, unstable housing and an underserved educational environment.

By tirelessly caring for the community’s most vulnerable individuals, The Salvation Army continues to be a source of refuge for millions of people.
