Some of the 400 winning My Park Moment shots are images you can return to view virtually online.
My Park Moment in the Presidio expresses the joy of a child skipping through the waves on Baker Beach, the serene beauty of orchids in bloom, and a gathering of friends who, for the first time in months, embrace. Observing a girl hidden among the tall grass, it’s easy to forget a dynamic city buzzes no more than one mile away. These scenes capture the magic of the Presidio, a national park unlike any other in America.

about the presidio
Americans are traveling to national parks in record numbers this year, flying and driving long distances to access natural beauty and open space. No need to log all those hours in a car or plane if you live in the Bay Area, however – the Presidio, a national park site located in the heart of San Francisco, is practically around the corner. Unlike most urban national parks or historical landmarks, like Ellis Island, the Presidio of San Francisco offers 2.4-square miles of trails, vista points, and – opening on Sunday, July 17, 2022 – the Presidio Tunnel Tops, new parklands that connect the Presidio’s Main Post to Crissy Field.
There are lots of things to do at the Presidio Tunnel Tops. It has nature play spaces for kids, picnic areas, places to fly a kite, and trails to walk in nature with wonderful views. You can even experience a classic national park campfire with the whole family.
Come to feel inspired and escape from the busy city at Presidio Tunnel Tops. This new outdoor area in San Francisco is a destination to enjoy on its own, and a jumping-off point for other Presidio adventures.
The Presidio’s historic locations are here to welcome visitors, from the highly acclaimed Presidio Golf Course to Fort Point National Historic Site, the interactive military museum that dates back to the Gold Rush in 1853. Opening July 17, 2022, Presidio Tunnel Tops promises to inspire multigenerational visitors for decades to come. You’ll arrive at Presidio Plaza, a gathering spot located a few steps away from the Transit Center and Presidio Visitor Center. Friends will gather at the Campfire Circle, an ideal location to enjoy a Park Ranger-led discussion. Visitors will explore the Cliff Walk above Crissy Field, and experience breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the City’s skyline from several overlooks.
The Picnic Place, the Meadows, and the Presidio Steps provide ideal locations for a casual lunch or an evening concert. Families will experience the Outpost, an outdoor play center that features a variety of natural structures to climb, play hide and seek, and invent new games while learning about the ecology of the region. The Field Station is designed to enhance the outside world through art and science and the Crissy Field Center will further this education, offering environmental classes, camps, and field trips for youth.
National parks are considered “America’s Best Idea” for good reason – they’re preserved spaces that provide a variety of opportunities for everyone to explore and learn more about the outside world. San Francisco is one of the few cities in America and the world to offer a national park within its city limits. With a cross-section of trails to explore, and with it’s ocean views and beautiful beaches, restaurants, lodging, and other amenities, the Presidio remains one of the Bay Area’s great success stories. Visit the Presidio website to plan your adventure into the wild at the edges of the City.

The Presidio is much more than a national park site – it’s a destination that’s alive with towering trees, wide sandy beaches, and hundreds of iconic locations waiting to be explored. It’s also a thriving local community and a city within a city where people live and with businesses where people work. The park's funding model depends on these businesses for revenue to maintain the trails, picnic areas, and buildings. When you enjoy brunch at the Presidio Social Club Exchange, share curly fries and a lane at the Presidio Bowl, or try a local craft beer at Sessions at the Presidio, you contribute directly to the Presidio’s upkeep.
The Presidio has served as a critical island of refuge for visitors over the past 18 months. The Partnership for the Presidio will continue to maintain a safe and peaceful environment of natural beauty as our public health guidelines continue to evolve. The Partnership for the Presidio is made up of: Presidio Trust, National Park Service, and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Working together, the Partnership for the Presidio has converted the former military base into a nationally recognized urban playscape, a transition that has served as a model for numerous other similar projects across the United States.
