In 2019, Janice Schoonhoven-Rinehart traveled from her home in Delhi, California, all the way to Atlanta, Georgia, looking for more. Owner of a home-based business that provided embroidery, rhinestones, and other branded items, Schoonhoven-Rinehart traveled 2,300 miles across the country hoping to elevate her art and take her creativity to new heights.
Schoonhoven-Rinehart grew up with a passion for crafting, and eventually went on to major in the business side of sewing and tailoring at her university. After 34 years working regular jobs, she decided to return to her passion and spend her retirement making and marketing homemade wares to the public. In 2017, Schoonhoven-Rinehart opened Rustic Embroidery Barn out of her farmhouse, but in just two years, embroidery left her feeling unfulfilled—both financially and creatively.
In search of creative inspiration, Schoonhoven-Rinehart decided to attend the 2019 Sublimation Summit trade show in Atlanta, GA and discovered a brand that would change the trajectory of her small craft business forever. That brand was Unisub.

Unisub is the world’s leading brand of flat, hard-surface substrates. They offer a wide range of sublimation blanks, from bag tags and keychains to coasters and clocks. Best of all, their bare substrates are vibrant, scratch and abrasion resistant, fade and chemical resistant, and virtually ageless.
The magic behind Unisub sublimatable blanks is the HD coating that causes photos and graphic images to pop, displaying artists’ work in vivid, vibrant detail. This enables artists, like Schoonover-Rinehart, to capture their vision and that of their customers in vivid, durable ways that showcase the art, preserve memories, and express individual personality.
“This is a way for me to design and create a graphic and put it onto something that can be displayed, like a photo or picture to be shown off,” says Schoonover-Rinehart. “With Unisub, the sky’s the limit — if you can imagine it, you can do it.”
Schoonover-Rinehart took her Unisub home and immediately started customizing designs for everything from license-plate frames to Christmas ornaments to earrings to trailer-hitch coverings. All she had to do was turn it on, go to the Unisub website for easy-to-read directions, templates, and graphic patterns, and start uploading her own original designs.
“The website told me the right temperature and the right time, and the templates made it easy to incorporate my designs,” says Schoonover-Rinehart. “My first press was perfect.”
Schoonover-Rinehart’s customers were immediately impressed by the crisp, vivid perfection of her designs and images. But long-term, they also came to love the durability of what they bought from her. Unisub’s proprietary polymer-based coating shields each creation from harmful UV rays and scratches, not to mention the bitter elements.
“The products hold up,” says Schoonover-Rinehart. “A license-plate frame here gets baked in 115-degree sun, dropped into freezing winter nights, and rain, and it comes out looking just as good as the day I pressed it.”
Artist and customers alike have all been amazed at the variety of items that the Unisub could produce. Overnight, Schoonover-Rinehart could imbue her wildest visualizations on blanks like dog tags, trailer hitch covers, and license plate covers.
Since she acquired her Unisub, Schoonover-Rinehart has seen her business flourish, as well. Before, Rustic Embroidery Barn could go days or even weeks between orders. Now, she’s fielding two requests per day to sublimate companies’ logos, custom images, stock artwork, and her interpretation of customers’ visions onto metal keepsakes that will last.
“I’m all in on sublimation,” she says. “My embroidery has taken a backseat.”

And, of course, Unisub has unlocked an entire universe of possibilities for Schoonover-Rinehart the artist. In her office, Schoonover-Rinehart has a wall that is nothing but peg board full of embroidery and other crafts and projects that didn’t work out as planned or envisioned. She jokingly calls it her Wall of Shame.
To this day, there isn’t a single Unisub creation on that Wall of Shame.
“Other products have been faulty,” she says. “The other day, I wasted five water bottles to get four good ones. That never happens with Unisub.”
