Christmas in the Filipino American community is a big deal.
Known to many as Pasko, the celebration of the birth of Christ incorporates not only Christian tradition, but also pre-Christian and secular traditions as well. For Filipinos around the world, Christmas is more than just the December 25th holiday; it’s a months-long celebration of what it is to be Filipino. As such, for many Filipino Americans – who often send gifts to friends and family both at home and abroad around the holiday – planning, decorating, and budgeting for Pasko can begin as early as September.

In California, U.S Bank provided grants to:
Asian Pacific Heritage Foundation
(San Francisco, CA)
to support continued awareness of diverse Asian Pacific American cultural heritage and to provide a forum for community collaborations.
Pacific Arts Coalition (San Diego, CA)
for ongoing support of the Coalition, which formed in 2020 in response to increased racism and xenophobia stemming from the spread of COVID-19. The Coalition consists of more than 30 local AAPI-serving organizations and works together to provide communication, collaboration and advocacy on behalf of the broader AAPI community.
Asian Youth Center (San Gabriel, CA)
Like most Christmas traditions, Pasko centers around giving. Balikbayan boxes, the traditional Pasko gift box, are prepared by September/October for shipping gifts and essentials to family in the Philippines to arrive in time for the holiday season. Each box is an average value of $500. As the holiday draws nearer, Filipino American communities across the country begin the festivities with parol lighting ceremonies. Parols are Christmas lanterns made in the shape of the star of Bethlehem. Often, Filipino communities will host sponsored events in their neighborhoods, using the parol lighting to attract holiday shoppers looking for gifts to Filipino-owned stores. The parol lights signify the season of giving has begun.
Giving is an integral part of Filipino culture, and during the holidays, giving cash remains immensely popular. For many of us, cash represents possibility, the hope that the future can be better. After one of the most unprecedented years in human history, in which opportunities shrank and dreams were disrupted, a little possibility is something we can all celebrate.
We are supporting the AAPI community by investing in local organizations and local Asian leaders doing essential work fighting racism. Our work and support of AAPI communities is critically important and will continue.
Reba Dominski
Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at U.S. Bank
Violence and xenophobia against Asian American and Asian Pacific Islander individuals cannot be tolerated. In continued support to the AAPI community, we are investing in organizations across the country to combat these biases and acts of violence. We stand with our AAPI employees, customers and communities.
Greg Cunningham,
Chief Diversity Officer for U.S. Bank
to support additional research and survey work with Asian residents in the San Gabriel valley to help guide future policy work and community programs.
This year looks to return to the glorious holiday traditions of old, whether it be Simbang Gabi (mass at dawn) 12 days before Christmas, Noche Buena mass and meal with family on Christmas Eve, the blessings and caroling of Aguinaldo or something different. Through our traditions we celebrate the possibility the future holds. U.S. Bank is honored to pay these possibilities forward, both to customers and in our communities. Visit usbank.com/holidays for more information on what U.S. Bank is doing to promote giving back in your community. Maligayang Pasko! ²
