You settle into your seat and take a sip of your perfectly chilled wine. The lights dim. The curtain rises. Suddenly, you’re transported to another place and time: the creeping mists of the 11th-century Scottish moorlands or a hot summer night in 1969 Pittsburgh. You find yourself swept away in an unforgettable story.
This is the sort of experience subscribers have come to count on when they spend the evening in the warm and welcoming halls of Marin Theatre Company, a theatre of radical hospitality that provides patrons with a home away from home. MTC has become one of the Bay Area’s secret havens for a night of fun and professional theatre set against the backdrop of towering redwoods and crisp mountain air. And let’s face it: don’t you deserve a “Fall Friday” escape from the city and your daily grind?
As a subscriber, you get your pick of dates when you’d like to see each of the four shows in the Theatre’s 2022–23 season. A quick trip out of the city later, and your complimentary parking spot and pre-ordered glass of wine are waiting for you. Can’t make it? Rescheduling for patrons is a breeze, even on the night of the show. All of these perks serve to underscore the simple idea that great theatre, with all of its charm, is waiting for you whenever you’re ready.
The magic of a night at MTC isn’t just about comfort—it’s often a potent, dynamic experience. The company stages works by artists on the cutting edge of the form and productions that reaffirm the cathartic qualities of great art, stirring you to reflect on your life and your place in the world. This type of getaway isn’t single-use entertainment. It’s deeply felt and impeccably realized creative work designed to challenge you as it moves you. Think of it as a New York City theatre experience—right in your backyard.
This season offers four singular productions by some of the greatest contemporary playwrights. Dunsinane (currently playing through October 16), is David Greig’s sequel to Macbeth, presented in partnership with Tamalpais High School’s Conservatory Theatre Ensemble. “Like Conservatory Theatre Ensemble, Marin Theatre Company believes that the arts is an integral part of a healthy, vibrant community,” said MTC Managing Director/CEO Meredith Suttles. “This partnership offers a wonderful opportunity for us to achieve deeper engagement with each other and the communities we serve.” The show itself is a tour-de-force, in turn a tense, Game of Thrones-esque political drama and an unexpectedly
hilarious romp.

August Wilson’s Two Trains Running (November 25–December 18) is the seventh installment (alongside works that include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Fences) in the renowned playwright’s American Century Cycle, which chronicles the African American experience in the 20th century through intimate, aching, and often paradoxically funny slices of life in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Two Trains Running depicts the effects of the neighborhood’s rapid gentrification on its Black residents and community institutions as the 1960s wind to a close.
JUSTICE: A New Musical (February 16–March 12, 2023) is the groundbreaking new masterwork from the MTC’s National Playwright in Residence Lauren M. Gunderson and award-winning composer/lyricist duo Bree Lowdermilk and Kait Kerrigan. The musical is a fascinating origin story for the tenures of Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The show is a powerful exploration of the strains between the personal, political, and cultural questions these prominent women have wrestled with through their fateful roles, as well as the effects their decisions have had on American life.
Where Did We Sit on the Bus? (May 4–28, 2023) is a heart-pounding musical journey through Latiné American identity. The show is performed, in its entirety, by actor, singer, multi-instrumentalist and intersectional feminist Satya Chávez, using live looping techniques to weave a tapestry of hip-hop and Latin rhythms. Written by Brian Quijada with additional compositions by Chávez, Where Did We Sit on the Bus? forces its audience to reconsider the past, present, and future of immigration and equality in America.

There’s something uniquely gratifying about experiencing an incredible piece of art that you can’t easily access elsewhere—like being let in on a secret. Whether it’s the west coast premiere of Where Did We Sit on the Bus?, the continued world premiere of Justice, or the first-ever performance of Dunsinane by an All-American cast, these are productions you’d be hard-pressed to find again should you miss them. And like any good secret, you’ll want to tell everyone about these thought-provoking gems and the evocative spells they cast.
The MTC’s investment in youth programming is another way it expresses its community-first philosophy. The Theatre is presenting the inaugural Marin New Play Festival from June to July 2023, providing a rare opportunity for young actors to develop their skills with a professional theatre company in an intimate, intensive setting. Additionally, your pre-teen and teenaged children will love JUSTICE and Where Did We Sit on the Bus?, opening a window for parents and teens to dialog on important issues in the light of these moving stories of equity and struggle.
