Fresh Mountain Air and Splendid Vistas in
THE BERKSHIRES Western Massachusetts
Few regions in North America look as brilliant across every season as The Berkshires. Each year, the autumnal spectacle transitions into a winter scene worthy of a Norman Rockwell painting, which may explain why the Norman Rockwell Museum is located in Stockbridge. Add in one cozy inn after another, holiday card-worthy towns, and a spectrum of outdoor recreation, and it's easy to understand why there’s nothing dormant about a visit to The Berkshires in winter.

Many of the Berkshires’ famous hiking trails transition to snowshoe paradise when the flakes begin to fall
Cross-country skiers will find expertly groomed trails in several agricultural areas across Western Massachusetts. Canterbury Farm, Hilltop Orchard, and Maple Corner Farm offer groomed trails through the forests and fields. Notchview features 25 miles of scenic trails.
The Berkshires are well-known ski areas with the most extensive terrain and vertical drop in Massachusetts. Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort and Berkshire East Ski Area offer 45 trails, night skiing, and excellent children's and learn-to-ski programs. The 44-trail Catamount Mountain Resort also features a dynamic tubing park.
The New England spirit spills across the Berkshire Mountains. Visitors will discover fresh finds from Guido’s Marketplace in Great Barrington to Heirlooms Jewelry in Stockbridge and Sheffield’s Susan Silver Antiques. Art lovers will find numerous galleries in Lenox featuring local artisans at An American Craftsmen Gallery, Hoffman Pottery, and Sohn Fine Art Gallery.
Visitors are often surprised to learn that the Berkshires are also home to several of New England’s finest art museums
The Norman Rockwell Museum presents rotating exhibits in addition to the extensive collection of the iconic painter's canvases. Clark's famous collection of European Masters is joined by unique programming throughout the year. Massachusetts MoCA, located in a 19th-century mill building, is frequently cited among the world's most innovative modern art museums for its curated collection and provocative programming. An art enthusiast could spend days exploring this North Adams institution.
If you’d like to celebrate a day of refreshing outdoor recreation or art appreciation then you can take advantage of the many trendsin culinary arts, craft beverages, and, most recently, cannabis, that The Berkshires are home to. Bright Ideas Brewing is located on Massachusetts MoCA Way in North Adams. Big Elm Brewing holds tours and tastings every Saturday. JMash and Furnace Brook Winery at Hilltop Orchards is a perfect post-Nordic ski stopover.
Like a few other idyllic rural areas in North America, The Berkshires have seen an elevated food scene arise in recent years. You can also find virtually any cuisine here where, it should be noted, the farms are much closer to the tables. Alta Restaurant + Wine Bar, Prairie Whale, and PUBLIC Eat + Drink are three of dozens of great regional restaurants using fresh ingredients and inspired culinary techniques.
The Berkshires offer visitors four seasons of beautiful vistas, outdoor recreation, and cultural surprises. Whether you choose to ski, take in a show, or settle into a romantic inn for a long weekend, The Berkshires have precisely what you are looking for.
