Be Cool This Winter… Learn to Ski or Snowboard at
Wachusett Mountain
Come Learn to Ski/Snowboard This Winter at Wachusett Mountain
Wachusett Mountain has hosted and trained thousands of beginners over the past 50 years. Though skiers have descended this mountain since the 1930s, the ski area we know today started taking form in the early '60s, when trails were cut and, as importantly, a beginner’s area was established. That original novice area has expanded today to include Ollie's, Polar Kids and Easy Rider, each served by an easy-to-ride automated "carpet" that conveys first-timers up the gentle slope.
The 2022-23 season looks to be a perfect year for skiing and snowboarding. The ending of La Niña promises plenty of snow, and there no healthier outdoor activity than skiing or snowboard. Wachusett offers New England’s easiest-to-reach ski area, operating day and night. For a weekend day with the family or a little midweek recreation for those working from home or playing hooky, there’s no better place to be. Wachusett Mountain staff have once again worked tirelessly to establish plenty of outside gathering places as well as an expansive Base Lodge. Ski and Snowboard School group lessons are small in number for maximum individual skill development and social distancing.
The transition from beginner area to novice terrain comes quickly for most new skiers and riders. Wachusett’s terrain is ideal to make that transition even easier. The Monadnock Express Quad chair carries you to the top of the Indian Summer and Sundowner runs, parallel trails where you can feel the crisp air on your cheeks as you point your tips downhill and unveil the magic of a sport unlike any other. Whittier’s Teaching Meadow also resides at the top of the Monadnock Quad, an area used by Ski and Snowboard School students to further perfect skills like parallel turns and stops, further illustrating the thoughtful progression of the beginning ski and snowboard experience at Wachusett Mountain.
As with many activities, a good instructor can make all the difference. The Wachusett Mountain Ski and Snowboard School offers a variety of youth and adult programs taught by certified instructors who excel at taking a new student and guiding him or her into a confident skier or snowboarder. (In fact, Wachusett is a past winner of the National Ski Areas Association Conversion Cup for the best program in the USA to convert new skiers and snowboarders into lifelong enthusiaists. The Beginner Package includes a lift ticket for the Monadnock Quad and Magic Carpets, rental gear and a 1.5-hour group lesson. This package, for ages 9 and older, is a great "tryout” skiing or snowboaring option and costs just $119 online this season.

The Ski and Snowboard School also offers a variety of lesson programs for kids. As any
parent will tell you, teaching your child to ski is usually best left in the hands of an expert instructor. Polar Kids (ages 4-8) covers a wide variety of essential beginning skills during the
1.5-hour lesson. Arctic Aces (ages 9-12) continues the training progression during a 2.5-hour group lesson in both a designated training area and across the face of the mountain. The
rental equipment cost for both programs is just $22 per day.
